Selecting Pokemon for your "Main" Team

I always, when selecting my main team, I choose Fire-Grass-Water-Electric-Flying-Fighting team. That's the way I always build my team - for example, these are my teams:

Red / FireRed: Charizard / Vileplume / Golduck / Magneton / Farfetch'd / Hitmonlee
Gold / Shiny Gold / SoulSilver: Typhlosion / Bellosom / Azumarill / Ampharos / Noctowl / Hitmontop
Sapphire: Blaziken / Shiftry / Wailord / Manetric / Swellow / Hariyama
Diamond / Platinum: Infernape / Carnivine / Floatzel / Luxray / Staraptor / Toxicroak

I've modeled my team after the Rival's for ever....
A Flying, A rock/ground tank, Starter + fire/water/grass x 2 + HM mule. Totals at 6.
I've tried to break away from that a bit, but I usually just end up picking a pokemon that looks cool.
Stats and movesets have started playing a role, now that I'm older... but my younger origins still show.

Well first, I make sure that I have good type coverage, such as Fire/Water/Flying/Electric, with two others, normally a Ground type and a Grass type. Then, I look at all of the available Pokemon of each type I have chosen. I judge on aesthetics, usefulness, and availability.

i always make a team that covers its own weaknesses with what I call "countering". For example, my torterra knows rock slide to take out ice- and flying-types. Sure, I don't get the type multiplier, but being super effective works just as well.

I hate pokemon that are way too cliche (lucario, scizor, salamence, metagross) and legends, so i generally avoid those. i like to go with underappreciated pokemon such as vespiquen, clefable, lopunny, hitmontop, etc
Same here. I've gotten rather sick of OU, so I'm jumping to NU sometime soon. :/

I will use any Pokemon in-game. When making teams offense is usually what I aim for. I almost never use defensive Pokemon.

Lookign for a sixth member.

My current team for Pokemon Platinum is:
Torterra
Luxray
Gastrodon
Lucario
Garchomp

Originally I decided on Gardevior and wish to change it to counter some weaknesses, so any suggestions and comments would be helpful thanks
