    Some background information:

This fanfic was originally supposed to be the sequel to Pokemon: Ruination. However, that story was rather poorly planned out, and I lost interest in it. I eventually decided to try writing this out, while leaving out any important plot threads tying this to the original story. I dunno if I'll ever bother finishing/rewriting the first story, but here's a summary of what I had planned after chapter 16...

Chapter 1 - The Unknown Prodigy

"Ladies and Gentlemen! We have finally reached the finals of the Indigo Tournament!" An excited announcer screamed into his microphone from his position in the middle of an arena. The field was located outside, big enough to hold fifty thousand people in the stands.

The announcer, a small, middle aged man with short blonde hair, continued. "As you all know, the finalists are last years Champion, Red of Pallet town!"
From one side of the arena, emerging from the waiting room, a young boy of eleven walked to his position on the field. Red, true to his name, wore a red jacket, with white stripes along the middle of the jacket and collar, as well as short, black sleeves. His cap was a similar shade of light red, with a white outline of a pokeball on the front.

"And the other finalist, a young woman who surprised us all with unbelievable skill! From the Sevii Islands, we have Blue!"
On the opposite side of the stadium, a girl wearing a blue shirt, a red skirt, and a white sun hat with a red pokeball outline similar to Red's cap. Clipped to the collar of her shirt was a device that looked similar to a VS. Seeker. Her long, brown hair swayed in the gentle breeze as she walked to her position on the field.

"As you all know, Red, at the young age of ten, managed to defeat the Elite Four and the previous Champion Green!" The announcer informed the cheering crowd. "So we know that his skill his great. Blue, on the other hand..."
The announcer paused for a second, glancing at the young girl. It seemed to him that Blue wasn't too excited about this match. Her face looked grim.
Must be nerves... Red's her opponent after all... The announcer decided.

"Blue, from the Sevii Islands south of Kanto, isn't too well known, but if her amazing battle prowess throughout this tournament is any indication, Red's not going to find her an easy win!"
The crowd roared in agreement and anticipation. One individual in the front row, centre seat, sporting brown, spiky hair and a black, short sleeved shirt and purple trousers, looked decidedly bored.

Sitting next to him, and cheering the two trainers on, was a broad-built old man with greying hair, and a white lab coat. The young boys grandfather and renowned professor of Pallet Town - Samuel Oak.
"Come on, Green, don't act like you don't want to be here!" Oak encouraged his grandson.
Green sighed with irritation. He didn't enter the tournament because of his Gym Leader examination, which ran concurrently with the preliminaries. That was a week ago, and he was now gym leader of Viridian, but it peeved him to no end that the stupid test couldn't be taken until next year if he skipped it.

Red, the youngest Champion in Kanto, smiled at his opponent. He was looking forward to an epic battle with this girl, who displayed amazing skills in battle. Blue, however, didn't look to excited about being here. As with the announcer, Red wondered if someone was wrong.

"The rules of this battle..." The announcer began, and Red snapped back to attention. "... Six versus six! No substitutes! Once one Pokemon is defeated, the trainers send out their next Pokemon until all Pokemon have battled or a trainer reaches four victories!

Red and Blue placed their hands over a Pokeball on their belts, staring each other down. Both had intensity in their eyes. Unlike the young girl however, Red's eyes also showed excitement.

"Round one... begin!" The announcer began the match, and sprinted away from the centre. As soon the announcer had spoken, the two trainers had picked a Pokemon and thrown the pokeball towards the centre.
From Red's side, an Espeon had emerged from the Pokeball in a flash of red light.
Blue's Pokeball had revealed a Ditto. The purple, feline like Espeon watched the darker purple blob of a Pokemon carefully.

"Match one! Ditto Versus Espeon!" The announcer shouted from the sidelines. Above the young trainers, a giant electronic billboard showed the current statistics. No wins or losses for either battler. Ditto and Espeon currently on the field.
As expected, the Ditto immediately transformed, becoming a copy of Espeon, albeit with a darker shade of purple fur.

I know Espeon's strengths and weaknesses, I still have an advantage... Red thought to himself. He was capable of making quick decisions, and his mind was flashing through many strategies to combat a fellow Espeon. While he did this, the gem in Espeon's forehead glowed for a moment. It had pre-emptively used Future Sight. That would take the Ditto off guard later.
"Ditto, Bite!" Blue commanded her Pokemon. The Espeon shaped Ditto then charged at the real thing, ready to bite it.

"Protect!" Red ordered quickly, and Espeon glowed a bright white light. The Ditto copy attempted to bite down on Espeon's neck, but it couldn't penetrate the shield.
"Psychic." Espeon's gem glowed brightly once again, and the Ditto was lifted away from Espeon, suspended by Espeon's Psychic powers.
Blue's eyes flashed with worry for a second, but she seemed to think of something quickly.

"Ditto, Toxic!" Blue ordered. The Espeon shaped Ditto aimed its eyesight at Red's Pokemon, and its gem glowed as well. A purple substance seemed to shoot out from the gem, coating Red's Espeon in the sludge. Unable to concentrate on the Ditto, the Psychic attack was stopped and Ditto fell, landing on its feet.

Red saw that his Pokemon had been poisoned, but there was an upside. He saw that Blue's Ditto had been poisoned too, thanks to Espeon's ability to pass on the status ailments inflicted upon it.
Blue had known this would happen, but she had a plan to defeat Red's first Pokemon, even if it had to be a tie. The fewer losses, the better. Losing wasn't an option for her.

"Wish and Fake Tears!" Blue ordered. Nodding painfully, Ditto's gem once again glowed, and a star seemed to fall from the sky, but no one could tell from the bright daylight.
Before Ditto could use 'Fake Tears' however, the real Espeon's Future Sight attack finally struck, delivering a mental blast and fainting Ditto, who reverted top its blob form.

"It looks like Red scored a powerful critical hit!" The announcer pointed out as the crowd roared in excitement. "Blue loses her first Pokemon fairly quickly, but there's plenty of time for a comeback!"
Blue was surprised that her Pokemon had fallen so quickly. But then again, her opponent was Red... Although the loss troubled her, at least Ditto had set up Blue's next Pokemon nicely.
"Thank you, Ditto." Blue recalled her tired Pokemon and smiled at the Pokeball.

Red recalled his own Pokemon, praising his Espeon for the hard work. Red glanced at Blue again as he chose his next Pokemon. She certainly cared for her Pokemon, if her smile was anything to go by, but Red wondered why exactly she seemed so down...

    -------------------------------------------

"Well, how's she doing?" A man dressed in a black uniform asked his colleague as he approached the viewing monitor. A young woman with short blonde hair who, Like her colleague, also wore a uniform. Both had a large red 'R' emblazoned on their fronts.
The female snorted in irritation. "She lost the first round. Pretty fast too."

The two dark-clad criminals were watching from a camera installed in the VS Seeker. Their view was almost exactly the same as the girls. The female Team Rocket member had watched as the Ditto had fallen.
"She uses such pathetic Pokemon against that damn boy and expects to win?!" She growled.

The male Rocket watched with a calmer expression. He didn't seem to troubled. "Well, we know that she's probably the best trainer we have available to combat Red. This is only to determine how well she'll fare against him in a real battle.

Risa, the female grunt, wasn't convinced. "Yeah, and if this was a real battle, she'd be losing badly just now..."
The male, known as Ryan, simply smiled slightly. Unlike his colleague here, Ryan knew that Blue wouldn't have lost her Pokemon so quickly without some way to utilise it to her advantage...

Chapter 2 - Exposition and Curb Stomping

"We've already seen some impressive battling from both trainers in the first round!" The announcer talked with excitement. "Of course, Blue's going to have to step it up a notch to beat Red! Can this promising young trainer stand up to the Champ?!"

Blue's hand hovered over one of her Pokeball's. She knew what her next pick was. Her next Pokemon would become all but invincible with the set up Ditto had provided with Espeon's techniques.
Red had decided on his next Pokemon, and he watched his opponent with a gleam of anticipation in his eyes. From what he'd seen of her previous matches, this girl had plenty of strategies to utilise in all kinds of situations. Red was going to make sure Blue done everything she can to make this a memorable battle.

"Will the combatants choose their next Pokemon!" The announcer called to Red and Blue.
Both trainers had taken hold of their chosen Pokeball and thrown it towards the centre of the arena. After the flash of red light, an Ursaring stood on Blue's side of the field, while a Poliwrath stood on Red's.

"Ursaring Versus Poliwrath! Unluckily for Blue, she happens to be at a disadvantage!" The announcer declared to the roaring crowd. Green remained silent, wondering how the girl was going to counter Red's Poliwrath.
Blue, despite keeping a determined and grim looking expression, felt excitement rising within her. This was her dream, to challenge the Champion. But this wasn't a match she had the luxury to enjoy. She had to win, no matter what.

"Ursaring, use Belly Drum!" Blue ordered her large bear of a Pokemon. With a pained roar, it began pounding its stomach, dealing damage to itself, but gaining immense strength in the process.
Red saw an opportunity to end the round in an instant. It looked like Blue was trying to gain a quick increase in strength, but had only weakened the Pokemon to a point where one hit could end the round.

"Dynamic Punch!" Red shouted. the round blue Pokemon flexed its arms, then charged at the Ursaring, which was only just finishing its technique. Poliwrath then threw a wild punch at Ursaring, hitting its stomach and causing the much larger Pokemon to collapse.
"Ohhhh! Looks like Blue loses another round..." The announcer commentated. Even he sounded pained by the attack.

To everyone's surprise however, the Ursaring struggled back to its feet. It seemed to be chewing something as well.
"W-what's this?! The Ursaring withstood the attack! But how can this be?!" The perplexed announcer asked no one in particular.
Red, surprised that his attack hadn't finished it, realised what had happened. He remembered that Blue ordered her last Pokemon to use Wish, a technique that restored energy after a short period of time. It must have kicked in just before the Dynamic Punch hit.

Blue smirked slightly, glad that her gamble paid off. A second later and she would be down two Pokemon right now. But thanks to Wish kicking in at just the right time, her Ursaring was unbeatable...
"Ursaring, Hammer Arm!" Blue shouted. With aloud roar, Ursaring sped towards Red's Poliwrath, surprising everyone with its amazing speed.
Before it could react, Ursaring had slammed the Poliwrath with its arm, sending it sailing over Red's head and onto the ground. It was defeated instantly.

"...Wow..." Red muttered, taking out his Pokeball and recalling Poliwrath. "Great job Poliwrath, you did your best."
"Amazing work Ursaring!" Blue cheered her Pokemon, momentarily letting her grim expression drop in exchange for joy.
After quickly remembering that she wasn't here for fun, she calmly recalled her Ursaring.

"My my, this sure is a surprise..." The announcer spoke quietly, his magnified voice unheard amongst the screaming crowds.
"Her Ursaring sure was fast..." Professor Oak commented, watching the girl with keen interest. She had great potential as a trainer, and wondered how she came to be so skilled.
Green didn't look too impressed however. "Come on gramps, it's a rookie strategy that Red fell for."

Red grinned as he faced Blue, and congratulated her on her tactic. He realised that what he saw Ursaring chewing must have been a Salac berry, greatly increasing the spee of any weakened Pokemon. The Wish technique must have activated just as Ursaring's energy fell low enough for the berry's effect to work, then brought back some of its energy, allowing it to counter.

"Well now, the score is tied at one victory each!" The announcer reminded everyone as the electronic billboard suspended above the stadium updated. "Each trainer now has four Pokemon each! What will there next choices be?"
The field is essentially reset... I need a quick victory or set up here... Blue thought hard on her next Pokemon. She had to make it count...

Red was far less worried about his choice however. He expected nothing but a great battle. Of course, he was aiming to win, but that wasn't the most important part of a battle after all.
Both trainers reached a decision on what to do, and had the Pokeball's in their hands.
"Will the trainers now commence the third round!" The announcer shouted, and both trainers once again released their Pokemon.

Blue's next Pokemon was a Marowak, while Red had chosen his Pikachu. The electric mouse stared at the ground type as electricity sparked from its red cheeks.
"Marowak Versus Pikachu! This time, Blue has the advantage, but will she come out on top in this round?!" The announcer roared to the cheering crowd.

    -----------------------------------

"Oh look, she actually won a round." Risa pointed out with a bored tone. Ryan glanced at the screen, where it was shown that Blue had just released her Marowak. "See? She can stand up to that boy."
Ryan had been calling some other Team Rocket members, asking for reports on the Sevii Islands. As expected, they still had complete control over the first three islands, with no one outside knowing anything.

"She's still gonna lose you know." Risa told Ryan. Sighing, Ryan replied. "Win or lose, this doesn't matter. We'll simply replace her weaker Pokemon. At the worst, she can buy us plenty of time."
"Time for what?" Risa walked over Ryan, losing all interest in the battle. Ryan simply shrugged. "They don't tell us grunts anything remember? But I'm guessing our boss knows that that boy will find out eventually what we're doing here, and needs something strong enough to stop him."

Risa wasn't entirely satisfied with the answer, but knew it was pointless to ask further. All they knew was that something important was at these islands, and they needed whatever it was to stage a huge comeback. Until then, they had to make sure that girl was up to the challenge, and inform no one of the present state of the islands...
