4th Gen Soft resetting freezes my game

Hey, I need some help. I use a DS Lite, and I've been trying to hunt a shiny starter on Pearl and Heart Gold, but whenever I press the left and right bumpers, my game just freezes. I've used both real copies and an Ace Kard 2, with and without a GBA cartridge in the second slot. I haven't tried a fifth or third generation game yet. How can I fix it? Do I just need to buy a new DS Lite? Obviously it'd be more convenient if there was something I could do without buying something else, but I'd appreciate any advice at all. Thanks!
