The old oak towered over the valley woods like a Giraffe amoung a group of mice. A single chestnut brown alder leaf drifted to the ground like a snowflake. Suddenly, one of the leaves on the forest floor twitched. A mouse scuttled out from under the leaf and over the bed of Autumn leaves. It stopped and sat up, twitching it's fine whiskers nervously. It had sensed an unearthly stillness in the air. There was a faint rustle.
The mouse heard, and it's head whipped round in time to see a white flash between the trees. It tried to run, but it was too late. The firefox pounced and snapped up the tiny creature in his powerful jaws. The mouse quickly went limp and the white fox lifted it's head proudly. He turned and padded back to the clearing just below the old Oak. A patch of sunlight illuminated the many scars the powerful creature had from protecting the pack. The firefox's name was Orcra. He was the Alpha male of the pack, and he been dubbed 'The Guardian' by many other firefoxes. The prey he held clamped tightly in his teeth was for Faith, his mate who was due to have pups soon.
He padded to the mouth of the den, dropped the prey and called his mate. "Faith?" his voice was deep, and somewhat calming. A beautiful Fetal padded out. Like all fully grown firefoxes, her fur was a pure snowy white, but her fur was paticularly brilliant, shining a brilliant pearly colour in the midday sun. Her eyes were a striking blue, and they seemed to glimmer. Her belly was swolen, however, and her pawsteps spoke of her evident exaustion. Despite this, she ran joyfully up to her mate.
"Orcra!" her voice was as pure as the birdsong at dawn. Her eyes shone an elegant shade of sapphire. Her mate watched her as she snapped the prey up gratefully. When she was finished, she looked back up at Orcra.
"Orcra, I can feel them!" she whispered exitedly. "they're due tonight!" Orcra let out a happy growl.
"the same night as Breeze's pups!" he said, his eyes shining a rich golden colour. Breeze was a gentle female and had chosen Rockfall as her mate. No-one knew why though. Rockfall was a violent male who fought first and asked questions later.
Meanwhile, Lion was hunting for Breeze. Rockfall was patrolling the boarders, so he couldn't do it for now. Lion had stepped in. He had needed to give Bravery, his apprentice, a chance to hunt anyway. Now, Bravery, who was just turning white though a few orange spots remained, watched quietly as his mentor caught wind of a rabbit. Lion dropepd into a hunting crouch and crept closer and closer to the rabbit. His paws trod softly and made no sound on the forest floor.
Suddenly, he pounced, landing squarely on the prey. The rabbit stood no chance. it was dead with one bite from the adult firefox. He turned back to Bravery. "I'll leave you to hunt for a bit while I take this to Breeze." Lion said. Bravery nodded and started to stalk a mouse as Lion ran back to camp. When he arrived back, Lion layed the rabbit down in front of the den entrance of Breeze. He was about to lay the mouse down when he saw Truth. Truth.
Forgetting Breeze entirely, he ran up to Truth. "hey, Truth!" He said. He was ver fond of Truth, and took every oppertunity to be with her. Truth's eyes lit up. "Sure!" She nodded. "The woods should be full of prey at this time of day!" And they ran off, side by side, into the woods. Bleak watched them sadly.
Bleak was a nervous Fetsa. But he longed to be brave for once. But when it came, he forgot and fled. There was a pang in his heart as he remembered how Bravery had mocked him after the last battle. He might not have fled, but he had barely attacked any of them. Bleak winced as the slashmark on his side stung again. He had got it at the last battle. If he had been braver, he could have blocked it. Now it was like a punishment for cowardice. Bleak sighed and wondered what true bravery was.
Night fell and all the firefoxes slept. Nearly all, that is. Breeze and Faith were both wide awake, straining to give birth in their seperate dens. Finally, after hours of painfull yelps, whines and growls, both had succesfully given birth to all their pups.
Breeze gave a contented sigh. She had three healthy pups, with bright orange coats and downy fur. She closed her eyes as her pups drank, and, by the time her pups had fallen asleep, she had too.
Faith, however, was quivering. She had given birth to 3 pups too. But only one had survived. A Fetal. Faith shuddered as the words echoed in her mind.
"A lone Fetal born to the two leaders,
Upon her paw the mark of the cedar."
Faith whispered. On the Fetal's paw was a mark, in the perfect shape of a cedar leaf. Faith knew that if the others found out they'd try to kill the pup. So quickly, she picked it up and gently carried it to Breeze's den. She wondered how to explain to Breeze, but no time now. She breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Breeze asleep. No need for explenations.
She placed the Fetal down besides Breeze and picked up one of Breeze's pups, the only fetal. "Take care, little one." She whispered. Then she was gone, running back to her den before anyone saw her with Breeze's pup and wondered what she was doing taking a pup outside. But she was in such a hurry she didn't see what happened next.
There was a flash and a spiral of fire shot down from the celing like an arrow. It touched Faith's pup, but instead of burning her, it seemed to meld with her, become one with her, enter her... then there was anotther flash and the fire was gone, as the first streaks of dawn painted it's beautiful colours over the sky... to be continued.
So, U like?
