4th Gen Stupid noob questions I'd like to ask...

    First some background.

I'm older than just about everyone here I'll bet. I'm a huge gamer, but it's all been on consoles and nearly always shooters. I bought a DS about 2 weeks ago just for something different and because my GameStop had them in stock. The guys there told me to preorder D&P because it was going to be this great game. Honestly, I thought Pokemon was gay. I did preorder both though, just because I didn't want to miss out on anything like I did on the Wii launch! I bought a used copy of Fire Red to play and see if I liked it at all. I was skeptical, and felt a bit silly buying it. It's Pokemon. Come on, I'm too old for this stuff. I've got kids. Anyway...

So there I was playing FR and LOVING it! I couldn't level up my Charmander to Charizard fast enough! Then D&P came out and my GameStop opened at 8 AM on Sunday. There I was and I couldn't wait to get home to play it. Here I am, 45+ hours later, and I'm finding there's a ton of stuff I really have no idea about. I'd like to ask questions, and since they're probably pretty stupid to most people here, I'll keep them to one thread.

    1) How can people have multiple Dialgas and Palkias, that they're trading them already and what do I need to do to get a couple to mix traits with?

    2) Is there a slightly easier way to beat the Elites, so that I can have seen every Poke and then Import my Charizard? I really want a bunch of Dragons just so that my wife will have a bit more respect for my playing Pokemon. It sounds much cooler to tell someone I'm raising a Dragon, rather than a Happiny or Clefairy. Now don't get me wrong, I love the ***oh god***"cuter" Pokes (Munchlax, Snorlax, Manaphy, Haps and Clefs, etc.) but they don't sound as cool and they don't learn the bada** skills.

    3) What are good Pokes to catch and trade so that I can get Pokes that may be "better"? Example. Let's say I want a Palkia (which I can't have yet because I haven't beaten the game anyway), is there a lower level Poke to offer someone to trade for it? I wouldn't want to trade my Dialga, because then I'd be without a that Poke. Make sense?

    4) I assume it's possible to breed Pokes since I heard the story about eggs just appearing, but let's face it, there are eggs and I see that people on these forums offer to breed stuff. How can I breed them? What's the trick?

    5) What are the REALLY COOL Pokes to get? I'm looking for mint complete copies of the older games like R/E/S as well as Leaf. I figure that if I can ever beat this game, that I can play those and import the coolest Pokes. I mean I'd like to have all 493 (it is 493 right?), but I dont' want to get divorced over spending too much time playing Pokemon.

Anyway, that's it for now. Stay tuned because I'm sure I'll ask some more really stupid questions in the future. And thanks for the answers. Like I said, everyone here REALLY seems to know more than me about this stuff, so I'm sure these questions seem like basic knowledge for everyone.

    1. People either buy multiple games, hack them, or trade them from people who don't want them.

    2. Bring something strong against Bugs, something strong against Ground, something strong against Fire, and something strong against Psychics. Make sure everyone on your team is lv50 or higher, at the bare minimum. You could also use your box legendary (Dialga/Palkia) as a sort of shortcut.

    3. "Good" Pokemon? That is the ultimate subjective question. Good depends on individual taste. Chances are nobody will trade a one-off legendary such as Dialga or Palkia unless you have something even more rare.

    4. Stick two Pokemon of opposite gender in Solaceon's daycare, then talk to the man outside. If he says the two Pokemon prefer to play with other Pokemon, they're incompatible. If he says anything else, just cycle up and down the road until the man turns and faces to the right. That means an egg is born, and it will hatch into a lv1 of the lowest evolution stage of the female Pokemon you stuck in the daycare.

    5. *sigh* Only someone this inexperienced would ask for the "REALLY COOL" Pokemon. <.<; That's something you decide for yourself. But I will tell you this: in D/P you can get almost every Pokemon, one way or another. The only Pokemon you cannot get unless you trade or import from GBA are the starters and legendaries from the GBA games. This includes the following: Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Venusaur, Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, Squirtle, Wartortle, Blastoise, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo, Mew, Chikorita, Bayleef, Meganium, Cyndaquil, Quilava, Typhlosion, Totodile, Croconaw, Feraligatr, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, Ho-oh, Celebi, Treecko, Grovyle, Sceptile, Torchic, Combusken, Blaziken, Mudkip, Marshtomp, Swampert, Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Latios, Latias, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, and Deoxys.

Alright, I guess "really cool" was the wrong thing to say. What I meant are what are the "must haves" in a good collection? Good all around Pokes to have, or those that are deemed more "valuable" per se. When I said "cool" I meant the ones that every one has in their collection or wants in their collection even if they arean't skilled enough to get every Pokemon. I think Munchlax is pretty cool, just as I do Blastosie, and most of the Dragons.

Next. The list you provided has about 40 names of Pokemon that I would have to import from a GBA or are Legendaries from events and whatnot. Am I wrong that there are something like 493 Pokemon in the games? D&P only has 150 plus the version exclusives right? About 200 total is my guess. So where are the remaining 250?

And please don't take offense to my word usage. You seemed upset that I said "the really cool" pokemon. It's just miscommunication. I'm trying to ask legitimate questions without sounding liek a complete fool.

EDIT: Also would you assume that the people that are all trading their Dialgas and Palkias in the GTS, have found a way around the system or something which is why they are willing to trade them off? I guess I just can't understand why someone would get rid of one. I personally would love to have both, but wouldn't trade one for the other.

D/P has EVERY Pokemon except for those I listed available to catch, one way or another. Swarms, the PokeRadar, evolutions through special means such as happiness, trading and/or items, and the Battle Zone island.

And no, there is no way "around" the GTS. And like I said, most people are only trading Dialga and Palkia for each other, or they're offering it up in exchange for something even more rare, like Deoxys or Manaphy.

Ok by good pokemons I guess you mean the strongest ones,

Firstly strong pokemons are determined by their Base stats, you can find these out by going onto Serebii's dex and choosing any pokemon and scrolling down.

Ok here are the base stats of a Metagross (Which is considered a good poke)

    HP: 80
    Attack: 135
    Defense: 130
    Sp. Atk: 95
    Sp. Def: 90
    Speed: 70

    Base Total: 600

Here's the DEX info page I got from serebii on Meta: https://www.serebii.net/pokedex-dp/376.shtml

Which is extremely good for a Non-Uber pokemon.

But if you look closely at the Base Stats, notice how Metagross' attack is 40 points better than it's Sp. Atk, this shows that it is a better Idea to use Metagross as a physical attacker instead of a special attacker, in D/P it tells you the type a move is, either physical (Red symbol) or Special (Light Navy blue) and Other (it has a circle on it).

Anyway, I saw from another of your posts in another thread that you hadn't beaten the elite four because your pokemon aren't strong enough, well PM me, as I'm willing to trade you my Lvl 100 Palkia to keep, if you want?

Oh yeah, if you don't want to get divorced over playing a video game, Don't play it!!!

That's exactly whaqt I'm getting at. See I like a lot of them. As girlie as it might sound (sorry I'm still coming to grips with the fact that Pokemon is pretty cool), but I like a lot of the cuter ones like Munchlax, and Slowpokes, etc.. I'm just not sure if they're even cool to have (are they pointless from a battle point of view). Personally I thought that Gyarados (sp?) was pretty cool, but then I read on here that a lot of people thought he was useless. I found that in the game, I could get beaten by even the "cutest" Pokemon unless my Poke was of a much higher level. I also taught them a lot of things that didn't do me much good. Example. I got Dialga, and just figured that I'd trade him off for a higher level Dialga. Bad move! I never would have thought that someone would take away all of his moves and teach him some base level punch. Sure, the new Dialga was level 100, but I couldn't do damage to anything and got creamed by a Bibarel (sp?). Needless to say, I traded him back for a level 50 with original moves. Now I just wish he was from the States and was named "Dialga" again, but oh well, my mistake and I learned. THese are the things I don't get.

As for finding a lot of the other Pokes that I wanted from other games, I think I just learned that there are a ton of Pokemon I'll never get because I'm too late to the party and don't have a clue how to get/raise/breed them. I know I'll never have Deoxys (I bought the cartoon for my daughter and I to watch the other day after I started playing the game), but how on earth you get Pokemon like Blaziken, Slaking, Salamence, Metagross, and a host of others into the game(without importing), is beyond me. I wanted Squirtle and the other starters from FR, but Ichida informed me I could oonly import them. Too bad. I wish they just put every Pokemon in this game so you didn't have to import. I could have collected forever and never stopped having fun.

And thanks for the link. I have spent hours (over 50 as of this minute) playing this game since I got it, and almost as many searching for sites for info. Serebii was one that I found, and I tried to register on the forums, but it kept timing out so I couldn't. I did find the Dex though because I know that to be able to Import I needed to see every Pokemon in the game. It also helps to know when they'll evolve. Anyway that's my story.

P.S. Two things. One, is there anyway to keep the Pokemon from evolving so that I could have all level 100 starters, as well as one of every evolution of Pokemon?

Secondly, thanks for the offer for Palkia, because that's one I'd love to have, but without beatingthe game I can't take her'him from you. I spent good mony on the Palkia Stylus though from ebay since I preordered too late and missed out on. Because I preordered everything Pokemon at Gamestop, they were kind enough to give me a Dialga stylus. LOL. I'm pathetic.

I got my Munchlax! WooHoo! I traded my lvl 30 Pacharisu (sp? sorry), but it's worth it. I slathered a truckload of honey on trees and he wasn't coming so I had to trade.

Gyarados packs a big punch, but it's the typing that makes it suck. One good electric attack will OHKO it. The stats are only a portion of what makes a poke good - typing is another important role. Metagross is an amazing poke not only because of its beasty attack stat, but also because of it's Steel/Psychic typing. With those two types combined, it has NO 4x weakness.

The Dialga you got sucked because of the moves? I've heard there's a heart scale move tutor like in Emerald... haven't gotten there yet. But that is the third thing to consider when making a Poke. So, recap, the three things that make a poke powerful are: Stats, Typing, Moves. If you're able to play that in the right way, you can have an ultimate pokemon. Level plays a slight role, but not much. A jacked up Alakazam can easily KO a pokemon ten levels higher than it. In this case, it's all about typing.

I noticed that too. In my "PC", I relabeled all of the boxes to reflect the first type for each Pokemon to make my life a bit easier. I have begun to try and balance more of my Pokes too. The problem that I have being a beginner, is that finding things that work is hard because of the fact I may beat one Poke with a set of moves and types, and I think it's a good combo, but then I get my backside handed to me by a different Poke with a different set up.

This is why I wanted to have multiple Pokemon of each. Unfortunately I don't see myself beating the Elite4 since I only have two Pokemon about level 50 (Emplonium 60+ and Dialga 52), so I was going to focus my efforts elsewhere. Maybe by the end of the summer I'll be able to beat them and finally import. Then of course I'll have to play the heck out of the GBA games to get Pokemon from there. lol.

P.S. Two things. One, is there anyway to keep the Pokemon from evolving so that I could have all level 100 starters, as well as one of every evolution of Pokemon?

Secondly, thanks for the offer for Palkia, because that's one I'd love to have, but without beatingthe game I can't take her'him from you. Well yeah you can, but that would be kinda pointless, for 2 reasons:

    1) They would be pitifully weak

    and

    2) The final evo's are cool

Anyway, to do it you'll need an item called an everstone, I don't know where to get it but, make the pokemon hold it and it won't evolve.

Also, I can give you my Palkia, free of charge of course, all you need is my FC, PM me for more info, or if you do want it, although I can only trade on monday in Australia (That's where I live). and lol as a little humouros joke for me, your turning into those pokemaniac trainers, lol

Anyway, with those starter pokemon, when I get them I am more than happy to trade you an egg, infact I'll give you a Metagross egg when and if you want my Palkia.

BTW (By the way) makesure you NEVER teach a pokemon a move of the same type, that just lowers it's total effectiveness, look at an example, Venusaur usually would be able to take out a blastoise right? Unless Blastoise had Ice Beam, which grass is 4x weak to ice (Either 4x or 2x idk) anyway the Blastoise would be able to KO it.

Also NEVER teach a pokemon a HM unless it's a HM slave or it's Surf, Surf is the only good HM and a good move.

That also comes to those types of moves:

You can get Ice Beam or Blizzard right? Except Ice Beam has a power of 95 and Blizzard has a power of 120, usually you'd go for Blizzard wouldn't you? Bad move, because the accuracy for Ice Beam is 100, whereas Blizzard is 85, if lets say you had one chance to strike b4 you died, and if your hit landed they would faint, you'd want to land a defenite hit.

Explain further please? I understand the second part about being weak to ice, but what do you mean "NEVER teach a pokemon a move of the same type"?

And of course if you want to trade me your Palkia and egg, I'd be thrilled. I have to check the time difference between here and Austrailia, but I'm game! I'll PM you my FC.

Oh and yeah I've become a freak! I love collecting stuff. I've got two motorcycles and am working on getting my third. I collect the older 1980's GI Joes, as well as odd stuff. I have a collection of Godzilla toys from Japan albeit a small collection, and a bunch of other things. This game is perfect for me, because I can collect and I love to customize. My goal at this point, like everyone's, is to build the ultimate team. It'll make it easier for me to justify liking something I had previously thought to be a "little kid's thing". Of course I have a feeling that some of the Legendaries and really hard to get Pokemon are the ones that would need to be part of "the perfect team", but oh well. I may have to scour ebay in a few months. I'm not too proud to spend money for one I'll never be able to get on my own. LOL. Like I said, pathetic.

So, let me ask this. Is breeding information a closely guarded secret or is there a good website for finding what pairs to put together?

On a side note, I think I just realized why everyone wants a Ditto!

DISREGARD. I found the breeding section on Serebii. I may not totally understand it, but I found it. Wow I really hate starting new hobbies late.

    @ Ichida,

Thanks for the info on breeding. I wound up getting a couple on Gibles and did what you said. It's worked like a champ. Thanks. I got lucky and now have two breeding pairs of Giblets...sorry...Gibles, and a bunch of eggs.

I owe you for the info and know that you have jsut about everything already, but if you'd like an egg or two, just let me know. Thanks again.

SIDE NOTE: Where can I find info on stones? Anyone? I got a Shiny, Dusk, Ever and Iron, but I wanted to know which stone to put with which Poke. It's really the Shiney that I was wondering about. I know that THe Ever keeps Pokemon from evolving so that's arbitrary, but the Shiney I gather only works on one or some certain Pokemon. Thanks.

Basically I meant that it is pointless to teach a Blastoise 4 water moves, when 1 water move still does what it is meant to do, it would be more effective to teach him 1 water move, and 3 different types of moves so he doesn't loose to his weaknesses, so you would teach a Blastoise Ice Beam so he can combat his grass weakness. Here's an example:

Ok this is a noob's Blaziken:

    Blaziken @ Leftovers
    Trait: Blaze
Nature: They noob would choose any.
EVs: they wouldn't know what they are
    Moveset:
    - Flare Drive
    - Fire Blast
    - Overheat
    - Flamethrower

See that set, ALL those moves are fire types, so how would you be able to combat Blaziken's weaknesses? Blaziken is weak to flying, fire is normal effective to flying, but rock is super effective so it would be more effective to teach Blaziken Rock slide.

This would be a more effective moveset for a Blaziken:

    Blaziken @ Leftovers
    Trait: Blaze
    Nature: Naughty
    EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Speed / 6 Sp. Atk
    Moveset:
    - FlareDrive
    - Rockslide
    - Swords Dance
    - Earthquake

With that set, Blaziken could sweep a whole team, if he is able to get 3 sword dance moves in. Moves like swords dance ARE good moves, when I used to play I would only choose powerful moves, and I learnt my ways, anyway if you want to learn more about competative battling go to game mechanics on serebii, and read everything there, except the stuff about deoxys.

Cool. I've got it. I made that mistake unfortunately, but then again, I already know that I'm a noob. My Infernape suffers from noobitis. Flame wheel, and Flamethrower, but I did manage to get to Fight moves in there. I see what you're saying. Wish I'd known all of this sooner before leveling my Party Pokes to 50+ already.

Side note, I sent you a PM and if you want, I've managed to get some Gible eggs (thanks to Ichida!)and even rode the 10,000+ steps to hatch 1 or 2 if you want. I figure I'm going to owe you soon. More than I do already. LOL.

Also, aside the Game Mechanics section of Serebii, if you do want to learn more about "competitive" battling, I'd also suggest you to check https://www.smogon.com for more articles and some example movesets for pokemon. :)

But if you want to stay with just collecting everything, that's fine too. I'm only now starting to grow interest in competitive battling myself. Looks like I've got a lot to learn, too. O_o'

I am really focused on the collecting now but down the road I would like to battle more seriously. I'm having a blast collecting now though and can't wait to beat the game so that I can start getting some of the others from FR/LG/R/E/S etc..
