Chapter 1: "Away from civilization, the cruise ship and my parents.""
Day 2
August 7, 2010
Dear anonymous jerks,
I have decided to write in this, computer-like thing you people gave me. I probably wouldn't if you had given me a better choice. I don't know why you guys want me to write in this thing any how. Aren't you guys already watching me? At least I assume your watching me, which is to say that if you guys had enough money to give me all this, whatever this stuff is, you would have enough money to have a camera on me. In fact you probably put cameras into these bands didn't you? Although really, was it really necessary to put four of them on me? What, was it in case I broke one off or something?
In any case, I would just destroy this, I guess I'll call it a journal since that's all it really is. I would do that and forage for food except there isn't any food on this island! I know because after waiting all yesterday for a boat or a plane to come by (which was a waste of time) I decided to look for food today. I checked the jungle, and although I didn't go very far into it, not a single fruit to be seen nor animal to be found. I tried going fishing but I can't find any fish, not even small ones. How is that possible? Do they just don't come around the island or did you guys put like a underwater fence to stop them from coming here? I could just hold off on eating any thing until a plane or a boat comes by but I don't think that's going to happen. I'm pretty sure you guys have planned it so nobody comes by here. You guys probably took me some where far away. Away from civilization, the cruise ship and my parents.
You know what, if this is the last any body ever hears of me or the last my parents ever hear of me, I want them to know what happened to me. So, I'm going to put what happened before all this.
****
My name is Ethan, I'm 15 years old and an only child. When this all started it was the middle of a perfect summer, well, okay not really perfect. All the other kids my age were ether at summer camp, at their cottage or on vacation. I, since my parents ignored my plea to go to summer camp, got stuck at home. In the middle of my boring summer, my parents got an invitation to a fancy cruise ship. The letter said it was a promotional thing they were doing for the cruise ship. We thought it was a scam of some sort. It would be more likely that they'd send one of these things to a much richer family if they sent one at all. However, my parents and I still went because the most we expected them to advertise the food that was being served on the ship or something, and we could tolerate that for a free cruise. Of course, its obvious that the scam was much different then we imagined but I should continue my tale.
So, there we were, on the ship. I believe the ship was called the "SS. Maneuver," I thinks it's a weird name for a ship, I bet it's probably some sort of inside joke. We were there for an entire day; and everything seemed fine till the dance. On the first night of the cruise there was a dance taking place on one of the lower decks. I don't know if it was really a dance, it was definitely some sort of party, my parents only heard that some festivity was going on, so we got dressed up and went down there. Actually, it was when my parents and I just walked into the decorated and musical room when a loud thud was heard. The music stopped and everyone looked around. Then another thud was heard and the room rocked or, I should rather say, the boat rocked. Soon after that more loud noises were heard and the ship rocked side to side and back and forth rapidly. My theory is ether somebody was ramming the ship with boats or we were stuck in the middle of a storm, it was probably the latter, although, the captain said there would be smooth sailing that night. In any case, we couldn't compete with the harsh rocking of the ship. I lost my sense of direction as I kept being tossed in every which way direction. I kept crashing into people or things, not to mention that people and things crashed into me. Eventually I got knocked out by something and when I woke up I was on this island.
To be correct, I was lying on the middle of the beach with not another living soul around. My suit and my dress shoes were gone. The guys who brought me here took it I guess. Instead of my suit I found I was wearing a white t-shirt, white shorts and red running shoes with white socks. I also found I had some stuff attached to me like the bands I mentioned before. I have one band around my neck, one on my right wrist and one above each ankle. I'm not sure what they're for. They seem to have a layer of clear plastic on the top and metal underneath that but no visible hardware or inscriptions. They aren't tight enough to constrict blood flow but not loose enough that they can be moved. No matter what I've tried I can't get them off, I think they might be tracking devices but as I said before, I'm not sure. You may be wondering why there isn't one on my left wrist? Well, instead of a band there's some sort of device
strapped to that wrist. This thing kind of looks like a watch except it's slightly bigger then a watch but still not very heavy. It's made out of black plastic and has a cylinder attached to the top of it. It has two slits at the bottom of it, for what purpose I do not know. There are two twistable buttons on the left and right sides of it that, if I use them properly, allow me to utilize it's functions. From fiddling with it I found that one of it's functions is to be a watch. Right now, it's 6:46 PM and a Saturday according to this thing. It also has one other function and that is of a phone, or at least that's what it says at the top of the phone. I don't see any way to dial and besides the word "Phone" the screen is blank. I don't know what it's purpose is, perhaps this machine just has the function of a phone but they deactivated it so that I couldn't call for help. Not that it's likely I'll get a signal all the way out here. It has a third function but it's screen is totally blank and inactive.
There's also something else next to the watch thing. It's kind of hard to describe, it's basically an inch thick metal plate attached to a wide metal band that's strapped around my left forearm (it's surprisingly light as well). The metal plate has eight symbols indented in it, four at the top of the plate and four at the bottom. The first indent is shaped like a feather. The second looks like a mushroom. The third a really weird shape. The fourth is flat along the bottom, the sides are curved and the top has a bunch of spikes. The fifth looks like a foot of some kind of animal with toe twos on the front of the foot and one toe on the back. The sixth kind of looks like a wing with pointy feathers. The seventh, is hard to tell but it seems to be a shell with spikes, maybe. The eighth and last one is a wing but a gargoyle looking one. There's also a band attached around my waist. It is a band in the same style as the others but a little looser so I can tuck my clothes under it. The band has what appear to be clamps connected to it. There are six clamps on it, three on my left, three on my right, all sticking outwards. They aren't really big so they don't take up much space. I thought they were meant to hold things for me but I can't get the clamps to open so I'm not so sure of that any more. The only other thing I got from them was left next to me on the beach. It was a dark brown bag. In it it had; a pair of blue jeans, a sweater, a sleeping bag, this journal, a ball and the note. The note didn't say much all it said was "Write in the computer and we'll give you food. Get the badges, win the trophy and we'll tell you why your here. Press the button when you are ready to start."
****
So, now that I've written my story of my condition, let's get back to asking the jerks some questions. Here are my next questions: What badges and trophy? Are they like merit badges or something? How am I suppose to earn them? What trophy? What do I have to do to get the trophy? I honesty have no idea what is you want me to do. What button are you referring to? Are you talking about the button on this ball? What happens when I push it? I guess it's foolish to ask such questions. It's not like you people are going to answer them. Are you? Cause, if you are, that would help me figure out what I'm suppose to do.
Then again, why am I even thinking of doing what's on the note? Didn't I figured I'd do the former part just for survival's sake but not the latter because I really don't care why I'm here. In fact, I still don't care why I'm here, I want to go home and I want to know where my parents are. Where are my parents by the way? Have you locked them up or did you decide not to take them? Are they being experimented on as well? They better not be.
I wonder if, perhaps, this isn't real. Maybe, when the boat rocked it was sinking. Maybe, I went unconscious and I'm just dreaming, or worse. I could be dead and this is just my mind trying to cope with it. God, I hope that that's not what happened. Yet still, I feel like this is reality, like this is the realest thing I've ever experienced. The only reason I don't feel like this is real because it seems to well planned. Well, I mean, this whole thing was probably a set up. The free tickets, the boat having an accident on the first night and the fact that you had all this stuff ready for me, makes it pretty obvious this was planned. The only reason I don't say "I'm sure this was a set up" is because it seems like too much money was put into an operation that basically relies on chance. I've heard of people paying a lot of money for experiments but this is ridiculous. Which brings me to another question: Is this an experiment or are you just messing a kid from Toronto for some kicks?
I guess it doesn't matter since I'm going to go ahead and do the other thing you wanted me to do anyway. Get this straight though, I'm only doing this because I don't think sticking around here will help much. It's getting late, so I better end this. I'll start my journey tomorrow, that is if I get the food you guys promised me, I'll wait till you guys deliver it before I start.
