This may be premature, and I'm sure the developers have plans for the PvP battles, but I would like to make a suggestion. I haven't actually got the app yet due to software issues, however I have read a bit and seen friends playing, and I have a suggestion to make battles more like the original games and more in-depth than it currently is.
Has anyone ever played a PlayStation One game titled Final Fantasy VII? I really hope so, but if not let me try to explain. As far as battle basics go, its the usual turn-based RPG battle system: based on the character's speed, friend or foe attacked, physically or magically, defended, used an item, and so forth. However, advanced players could alter the battle settings to add more of a challenge to the battles. It has been a while since I have played so I am fuzzy on all the details, but at least one of the changes turned the battles "active". This meant a characters turn in battle was, again, based on their speed, however their, let's call it "turn bar", would have to fill up before an action could even be selected.
I would like to suggest a similar method. As I understand, current battles are tap to attack, long press for special attack, and slide to dodge. Also, when it comes to elements in battle, am I understanding correctly that the attack's element is that of the pokemon itself? And this is just me, and I understand this is new territory for pokemon, but this battle system does not reflect the roots of pokemon, and more specifically Pokemon's battle system roots.
My idea isn't whole. I haven't figured out every aspect of it, but hopefully it could give the devs another angle to try to use. And finally my idea is thus: when entering a battle each Pokémon's, let's call it "speed bar", begins to fill. Once the bar fills, attacks (that is plural on purpose) or items are then available to select. Not until an attack, or item, is selected will an attack initiate. If, by chance, both pokemon happen to initiate commands simultaneously, then the one with a higher speed stat will activate first. I believe with this basis, most of the other factors could/would be like the original games. Physical attacks, elemental attacks, status effects, defense stats. It would be similar and familiar as the old systems, yet still with a new twist. Its hard to fully describe in the post, yet I believe it would be a great fit for such a great start to an amazing idea that has already brought so much to the fans. Please let me know your thoughts. And to the developers who may read this, please consider this deeply. It could even be used to battle wild pokemon, like the original games, and just so much more that I could write for days about.
