The difference between EV training and Not

I took my son to the closest gamestop hosting a tourny this weekend. we had all of 13 people enter including myself and my son. My son doesn't have pearl or diamond yet so i let him use my game pak with pokemon he imported from his R/S/E/FR/LG. He and I had the unfortunate luck to be battling each other in the first round. Our fight was fairly even, and i only won out of sheer luck. Watching other battles gave me some ideas on who knew their stuff and who didn't, and people who were EV training. We had one player who sent out a kyogre, and wiped out the other player in 3 straight moves, some of which were "not very effective". She claims to have won 50 toury matches with no losses to that point. The gamestop employee didn't have any good means to check if it was a hacked poke, but did double check the game after that win. I didn't make it past the second round, partly because my party wasn't real good, and partly because my second opponent had done quite a bit of EV training and it showed.
While i may not like EV training (and really have never done any) i do recognize that if you are going to enter the competitive side of pokemon, you will HAVE to EV train, or you will never survive.
I enjoyed the tourny, and went into it assuming i wouldn't win, so i wasn't dissappointed. With a little more effort and some research on how to better use and equip my pokemon, i could fair better in my next tourny attempt.

Yeah, you really need to spend a long time on a team to get good EV trained Pokemon. EV training can take from twenty minutes to a few hours, depending on how you do it. Power Items help, as does Macho Brace, but the fastest way is Power Items, obtained from Battle Tower. It also takes a while to breed for the right nature Pokemon sometimes, and even gender too.

You have to take a lot of time getting the perfect lineup with the perfect movesets and EVs, but it's not always perfect because you'll always have a weakness.

I'm sorry, but that is cute. You & youe son fighting in a tourney.

Now EV training is gonna have to split up your time EV training. Try to play when you have free time, cause EV training is gonna eat up a good chunk of your life.

EV training is worth it though. Just listen to the guy's story. My tyranitar's second highest stat is speed thanks to EV training. Natures are important too. It is worth the effort though.
