What do the fast shakes, long shakes, and in between have to do with anything?!

Those are where you walk to find Pokemon.

Hmmm I think I read somewhere that if the grass patch sorta shines it's more likely to be a shiny pokemon/rare pokemon. You can see some of the twinkle a bit. The shaking patches are where you should be going as well when you use the radar.

Also, if you defeat or capture one of the shaking-patch pokemon, it will continue to 'pokeradar' until you meet a different pokemon from the one you encountered on the first shake. Does this help? xD
