    -Prologue-

A tall man was sitting at the back of his office, hidden in shadows because of the dim lighting. He had dark brown hair, cat-green eyes, and exceedingly pale skin that was tight on his face and clearly revealed his jaw. This man was wearing a silver, almost metalic, shirt with a black vest over it, and long black pants to cover his long legs. On his left sleeve, there was bold red lettering that spelled out E.D.O. A younger man with a similar, however less dramatic, uniform on and sea green hair had just steped in, and he looked somewhat nervous. A low growl sounded at his arrival, coming from the point beside the chair of the creepy-looking man. A pokemon sat there, one that looked like a white leopard with metal spots and iron from it's knees down. The leopard 'mon's orange eyes stared at the newcomer menacingly.

"Hush, Snowleo, he is simply one of my workers. No need for hostility." The man said in a low yet warm and calm voice. He turned his head up to the grunt before him. "What news have you brought with you today?"

"W-well sir," the young man started, "I have here our newest er, achievement."

    "Oh?"

"Urk! Y-yes, we- my team and I, that is -have recovered the Nature's Heart." With a shaking hand he showed his boss a small seed in the shape of a heart with thorny vines erupting from its top.

"This is an achievement. Go and store it in with the Liquid Starlight, we don't want this to get lost now do we. You are dismissed."

"Er... one more thing sir. I a-also heard a rumer about Sky Island. It is said to be in a crater lake in the middle of th Rhokutta mountain range."

"Well done! You are the leader of your team, correct?" The grunt nodded hastily. "Well then, after such huge discoveries you only deserve one thing- you have officially be ranked-up to commander. Now go. Snowleo and I have some plotting to do.'

"Th-thank you sir! Yes I will be off right away!" Not in any way trying to conceal his joy, the newly-appointed commander strode out of the room and shut the door tightly behind him.

"Well, Snowleo, we have gotten much further on our plans. It has taken years, but finally I have two out of three of the Legends' tokens, and we have found the location of Sky island. All that is left is to discover the Starlit Archipelago and the mysterious Shroud Isle. Oh, and we need the elusive Nightmare Wand. Once those tasks are complete, well, we could say we rule the world once we get that far!"

    -Chapter I-

It seemed like the forest would go on forever. Endless amounts of trees and pokemon, never would Holly be able to reach Gatewood Town. But I must continue, my seventh gym badge awaits there, and only one battle away. Besides, once that is done, I can relax on the beach. Holly was a young girl of about thirteen, and of average height and other such measurements. She had unusual white hair that hung down in strands in front of her blue eyes and down her back in a shaggy manner, but far from unkempt. Her dark-green backpack was slung over her shoulder and five red-and-white balls were attached to her belt. Below the belt extended a dark pair of bluejeans and above was her slightly worn black shirt. By all appearances, Holly was an ordinary trainer.

It was then that she saw it- Woodgate town. No, Gatewood town Holly reminded herself. True to its name, Gatewood town was bordering a large forest and was blocked off by a huge and beautifully carved wooden gate. Enthusiastically, Holly ran up to the security gaurd standing at the entrance.

"What brings you to Gatewood town?" He asked calmly.

Holly wasted no time with her reply. "I'm a trainer, here to challenge Camile at the Gatewood gym." She held up her trainer card for the gaurd to see.

"Impressive," He said when he saw the five pictures of her pokemon on the bottom. "Posiduana is a very rare pokemon."

"Yup! I've had Neptune since he was a mariguana." She replied happily.

"Well, lookin' at these fellows I'de say you have a good chance of beating Camile, welcome to Gatewood town." He opened the gate with the push of a button and stepped aside so that Holly could walk in. Eagerly, she ran inside, slowing her pace once she was about ten meters from the entrance. The city was sure a sight to behold.

All of the buildings in Gatewood town were made of wood, still holding true to its name. Even the gym looked like an orange-roofed cabin. I'de half expect for Camile to be a grass-type trainer. But this is still a sweet location to raise bug-types. Many people were here in the city, and about one bibarel for every five people. So that was how they built such a beautiful wood city. An excited little girl ran past Holly wearing a swimsuit and being closely followed by a Jelliqua. The small blue pokemon with a squishy ball and tentacles on its head had to pump its short legs fast to keep up with its friend. The must be headed to the beach... I need to be off to the gym though. No time to stop there.

Holly kept walking until she reached the large doors at the gym's front. Okay, let's review. Camile will have three pokemon, and I will be allowed three pokemon. Because she raises bug-types I will use Snowball and Bulk, since ice and fire are super-effective. My third pokemon will be Yin, she needs some training if I ever want her to evolve. Okay, that's it. Let's go! Holly took a deep breath and pushed open the doors to yet another impending challenge.

((In know this is short, but chapter two will be MUCH longer.))

    -Chapter II-
The gym had a dirt floor with weeds growing through it, and a big arena was the centerpiece. It was surrounded by large spiked plants and grasses formed the lines that traversed it. At the back of the gym, a woman was lying on her belly- on a mat of course so she wouldn't get her outfit dirty -looking at a book of pokemon. She had large nerdy-looking glasses and a large net beside her. Her hair was short and olive green and she wore an olive green shirt to match it. The woman's pants were tan and riddled with pockets, buttons, and zippers. She must be the gym leader, Camile, Holly decided.

"Hey, I'm here to challenge you to a gym battle!" Camile looked up when she heard Holly's voice, and then got to her feet and brushed herself off.

"Great, I don't get challengers often! Head over to your side of the gym and prepare for a fight." Camile herlelf walket to the trainers' space on the left side while Holly gleefully trotted over to the right. A ref. seemed to appear out of nowhere, probably from a back room. Okay guys, let's do this!

"I'm the gym leader, so I'll send out my pokemon first. Go Vespiquen!" A flash of white light announced the arrival of the large wasp-like pokemon. Holly smiled and threw her pokemon out to join the vespiquen.

"All right, I'll start you off easy, come on out Yin!" A second flash lit up the room and from it a small mouse pokemon was revealed. It had a black zig-zag tail with a swirled end and its entire back was black. The pokemon stood on its hind legs which were white. Other than the black that stretched from its back to the top of Yin's head, the only part that was not white was a small black patch on the pokemon's belly. A white patch was on the back of it's head, just between Yin's ears. She stood proudly before the much larger vespiquen.

"Mou mousao ao!" Yin cried out. Vespiquen responded with a small grunt and a roll of her eyes. It seemed that the bug-type was annoyed with the meek competition.

"All right, let's get this done with, Vespiquen, use gust!" A blast of air shot through the gym and nocked Yin off her feet, sending the small mousao high into the air. Without command, Vespiquen use power gem on Yin while she couldn't dodge. Holly watched helplessly until the gust died down, and only then was she able to command her pokemon.

"Yin, I know your hurt badly, but let's still do this! Use confuse ray!" A wavering ball of light was released from Yin's forehead and meandered toward Vespiquen. Cockily, the vespiquen dodged the slow move, but the confuse ray followed and hit its target. Vespiquen floated back and forth for a bit before shaking it off and focusing again. Oh geese, she was able to shake off confuse ray just like that... I'm in for it now!

"I didn't become a gym leader for nothing! Vespiquen, finish it off with another gust and power gem combination." Again Holly had to watch helplessly, but this time her pokemon fainted. There would have been no point in returning Yin, she was to weak to do much good later anyway. Sadly, she pulled the fainted mousao back into her pokeball and looked up with rage.

"Okay then! This guy was my first pokemon, and you won't beat him with any ease at all. Bulk, show 'em how it's done!" Holly flung one of her pokeballs into the air, watching as it opened and the horror that crossed her opponents' faces when they realized it was a fier type.

"PANDEMONION!" The panda pokemon shrieked. He was a well built and sturdy panda that had red details, rather than black, and stood more erect. A fissure filled with magma ran down his back and branced out onto his arms. When Bulk roared, fire erupted from that crack in his fur. "PANDEMONION!" He roared again, Bulk wouldn't lose this fight.

"Kay buddy, show that vespiquen what you got! Use fire blast." Bulk anticipated what Holly was saying and had his fire blast ready seconds before Holly finished the command. A star shaped mass of fire was flung toward the vespiquen at an extreme speed. Despite her trainer's efforts at a command, Vespiquen was to terrified to move, and the fire blast hit right on target.

Vespiquen was blown back into her trainer by the force of the move, and because it was not only powerful, but also super-effective the fire blast took a severe toll on the bug-type opponent. "NOO! Vespiquen, don't let them think you are weak, charge in with quick attack!"

"This should be easy, take the impact of quick attack with a fire punch!" Vepiquen charged in as commanded, and likewise, Bulk defended itself with a fire punch. Both moves were power-packed, however with the opponent already weakened and super-effected by the fire punch as well, Bulk prevailed. Vespiquen lay fainted on the gym floor, and Holly's pandemonion straightened himself so he would look dignified for the next battle.

"Awww, I like Vespiquen. But there is no time to dwell on that, come on out heracross!" The dark blue beetle was released from his pokeball and stood up on the battle field. "Herrrr heracrossss!" Camile looked pleased with her pokemon. "Heracross, use meagahorn!"

"Great, go ahead and use another fire punch." The pokemon collided with a bang and both were pushed back a few inches because of the impact. Both were equally scathed. "Now, use flamethrower and take him down!" A jet of flames erupted from Bulk's mouth as he unleashed the powerful flamethrower.

"Show off your speed, heracross! Dodge and come in with x-scissor!" THe move of the heracross came so fast that even after the command was given Holly didn't see it coming. Bulk cringed with the pain. Unbelieveable... that heracross must be strong to be able to damage Bulk like that with a type disadvantage.

"Okay Bulk, retaliate with fire blast!" Yet another star of flame came off of the panda pokemon and was flung at the enemy. But, without command, heracross let out another x-scissor and destroyed the move, hurting both pokemon equally. Now, Holly was mad. "Give it all you got Bulk! Show 'em up with slash!"

"You too heracross, come in with your magahorn!" A collision-course was set between the two pokemon, and both sides were confident that they would prevail. Dust flew up. A loud clash was heard. And then the dust setteled. Naturally, both Bulk and heracross had fainted, this section of the battle had ended in a tie. "Great work Heracross, return."

"You too, Bulk. Come on back. Brilliant, looks like we both have only one pokemon left. I have no choice but to send out... SNOWBALL!" A sturdy, ice blue pokemon with tan stripes appeared in front of it's trainer. "I-ca, icabara! I-ca icabara!" Snowball sung out an endless chant while he twitched his whiskers and wiggled his small ears and foot-long tail. Camile looked at the pokemon, and then at her own pokeball.

"The other two may have seemed impressive, but this guy is my most powerful! Lumoth, take care of this trainer once and for all!" A pokemon ame out of that last pokeball with a happy look on its face;big round eyes and a smiling mouth. The lumoth had feathery antennas that glowed brightly in a very pale shade of blue and its wings were similar to those of a butterfree, only more angular and rather than having black lines they were shining in the same blue. The pokemon's body was a pale yellow-green, like the color of a glow-in-the-dark decoration, and shone very dimly. Six legs extended from its body; two pairs ended in mitten-like hands and boot shaped feed finished off the last set. Happily, Lumoth flapped its wings and trilled. "That's right, Lumoth use flash!" A dazzling light surrounded the room, temporarily blinding the unsuspecting Snowball. "Now! Come in with flash cannon!" The move hit snowball directly, and took off loads of damage. Man, this battle is looking down.

"Snowball, don't give up! Use ice beam!" The ice beam was fired, but promptly missed- the effect of flash still lingered. Holly grit her teeth.

"Lumoth, end this. Flash cannon, again!" During this move, Snowball snapped out of his dazed state and dodged, looking at his enemy with a ferocity Holly had never seen. "ICABARA!" Snowball put his foot down and prepared to use an attack, but was interupted when his body began to glow. Snowball's feet and legs became stronger with added muscle. He gained a little over a foot in height, and his front two teeth grew out in length like a bidoof's. The foot-long tail was now shrunk to a measly stub and snowball changed in color to tan with ice-blue stripes. He had evolved. "Fr... Froooo... ....... ............... FROZITODON!"

"Wow, never seen a pokemon like him. Just a sec, checking my pokedex." Holly pulled out the red box and opened it to see the new information.

"Frozitodon, the Ancient Rodent pokemon and the evolved form of Icabara. In prehistoric times, the lived in swamps. As the eons passed, those swamplands were raised to become the Rhokutta mountain range. As a result, Frozitodon became an ice-type."

"Sweet! Okay Snowball, ice beam!" "FROZITO--DON!" Angrily, Snowball launched an ice beam at Lumoth, and hit. The glowing pokemon straightened itself again and preformed an aurora beam. Snowball recoiled at the impact but held his own.

"Lumoth, I said end this! Psywave, now!"

"Oh no you dont. Snowball, counter it with ice beam!" The move that Snowball used was not ice beam. It enclosed Lumoth in an icy tomb, literally freezing it in its tracks. The glowing moth fainted instantly and was returned by his trainer.

"Now that was fast. Looks like your frozitodon learned sheer cold- its a one-hit knock-out move. Should be careful with it though... Well come here! You won!" Holly was surprised, but returned her pokemon and walked up to Camile none the less. "Kay kid, um... Holly, right? Yeah, here is your token of achievement- the Honeydew Badge."

"Wow! Thanks!" Finally, Holly had her seventh badge, one more and it was time for the pokemon league!

    -Chapter III-
Seeing as Camile was a bit lonely and had nothing to do after the battle, Holly had asked for her to join her on a relaxing walk around the wooden city. Or more like the almost-wooden city. One building stood out- a large metal structure with a satelite on front and some other strange stuff on the roof that Holly didn't recognize. The metal monster seemed out of place in the peaceful cabin city.

"Hey Camile, what's that?" Holly turned to her new friend and pointed to the unusual metal building. "It seems odd to have a building like that in this city."

"Yes, and odd it is. It was put up by a company called E.D.O.- the Evolution Discovery Organization. Despite their name, they actually haven't discovered anything. They just put up this weird building and then did virtually nothing. It's almost as if they are hiding something. Wierd huh."

"Yup, it is weird. Hey, speaking of weird, where did you get your lumoth? I heard that they were rare and only lived in the deepest and darkest caves. You don't really seem like the type who would go out exploring caverns and such. And I should know- I'm completely devoted to spelunking. Can't resist a cave anywhere."

"He he, well too bad there are no caves around here! But, to answer your question, I got lumoth when he was just a tiny lumivae. There were two of them, two rare and beautiful lumivae in my favorite clearing out in the forest. I figure some trainer must have abandoned them there." Camile appeared deep in thought as she considered what she was about to say. She sighed. "Listen, you only have five pokemon with you, right? I told you that I found two lumivae in the forest... well, to tell the truth, I seemed to neglect one and only trained lumoth. C-could you do me a huge favor and raise the other lumivae for me? I have it right here."

"What? Oh, sure, yeah. I'll take lumivae, I'm just a little worried that people might think I'm some super-trainer or something because I already have a posiduana and a mousao. With your lumivae, that will be three very rare pokemon. But... it does seem like a good plan. I'll make sure he is the happiest lumivae ever!" Camile smiled and handed Holly a pokeball. When it was opened, a pokemon came out that was virtually featureless- just a pale, yellow-green worm with cute black eyes. "Tee hee, you glow like a little nightlight! I think that is what I will call you, actually. Come here nightlight!" Holly scooped up the shining pokemon and he pressed up against her arm.

"Wow... I finally got that off my shoulders. Maybe you would like to go and see the clearing where I found him. It's not far from here, just outside the gates and east until you pass the city wall. It shouldn't be much further than that point." Holly nodded her thanks and turned to go- seeing the clearing seemed like a good plan. Just then, a great laugh erupted behind her. "Ha hee hee ho ho ha! Oh yeah, and remember, lumivae like to build pale-blue glowing cocoons that cover all of them but their head! Look out for that!" Camile continued chuckling as Holly approached the gate.

What was that all about? Holly wondered. Looking up she recognized the same security gaurd from before standing at the gate. It must have been the very end of his shift. Holly seemed glad that she could show off her badge. She held it up as she went by, and said that she had won.

"Whoa ho ho! Nice work there, I told ya you could win! So, you goin' sightseeing before heading in for the night? Suit yourself. It will be another gaurds turn when... . . Why is there a lumivae glued to your arm?" Holly hadn't thought to check on Nightlight when Camile had laughed at her, and now she was frustrated.

"Nightlight! Why'de you form a cocoon on my arm?" Holly wiped some of the blue, stringy, goo off her arm, but her effort was futile. As soon as she had wiped it away, Nightlight spit another chunk on the spot. "Okay whatever. See ya!" Holly waved goodbye to the gatekeeper and headed off in the direction she had been told.

"See ya 'round kiddo!" The man replied. Holly smiled and continued on her way. It was nice to be surrounded by so many kind people.
    * * *

Camile had been true to her word; the clearing certainly wasn't far. When Holly came upon it, she was amazed at the beauty. On the side closest to the ocean was a very rocky hill, and a few large rocks were scattered in the field. Little flowers were growing all around and a couple pokemon were grazing and playing. Holly decided to take in the subtle beauty from the rocky hill, situating herself in one of the few grassy spots on it.

I think it would be a good idea to get some more info on lumivae. I need to know about my pokemon. Holly pulled out the red box and began reading through the information presented. "Luuuu lumi!" Holly continued reading. "Not now Nightlight." The bug pokemon shifted in his cocoon. "Lumi umi vae vae!" "I said not now! Can't you see I'm reading?!" A sharp pain jolted through Holly's head as one of her hairs was pulled out by her persistant pokemon. Now she was mad. "Seriously Nightlight! THAT wasn't necessary!" "Lumi-vae." Holly stared at her pokemon with wide eyed amazement. "Oh... wow. What have you discovered?"

The hair Nightlight had pulled out wasn't just to get her attention, now he had stretched out of his cocoon partway to hold it in front of a crack in the rocks. The hair wiggled and waved because of the force of the gentle rush of air. Tenatively, Holly reached out and held her hand over the crack. Sure enough, it was emitting a small and nearly unnoticeable stream of wind. "Wind from inside the Earth... caused by the air pressure in... a cave? It can't be..." Holly move some of the rocks out of the way. Right there, now exposed in plain view, was an opening just wide enough for a human to crawl through facing the sea. "So that's where you come from huh. No trainer abandoned two lumivae in the clearing, you and your friend simply crawled out of the tunnel!"

"Lu lumi!" Holly chuckled. "Well, I can't deny a good chance to go spelunking. I'll try to be out before nightfall. He he... looks like I get my wish; there is a cave here after all!"

((Meh, this looked WAY longer when I was typing it. Sigh.))

    -Chapter IV-
Holly carefully slipped feet-first into the hole she had opened up and slid onto a stony platform. That wasn't so hard. Now to have some fun! Eager to explore this new discovery, Holly jumped down to the next platform hard enough to cause a few decent sized rocks to fall down by the entrance. Freezing, Holly watched as the last little chunks of stone fell into the cave, but then, she took a deep breath. It had just been a miniature rock-slide.

"Whew, that was a close one nightlight! Fors a second there I though that the whole thin-- AIEEEEEEEEEE!" Holly had taken a few more steps and the thin landing of rock she had been standing on had given way. Now Holly's eyes were squinted so that they were almost shut as she plummeted down a narrow tunnel. Below her, a bright light lit up the cave. Am I hallucinating? Is this the end for me? Am I about to DIE?

When all seemed to be lost and Holly had given up hope, she found herself tumbling down a shallower slope at an increasingly rapid pace- but she was safe, the flash had been Bulk coming out of his pokeball, and now the hefty panda pokemon was somersaulting down the passageway with Holly curled up in his paws. I'm safe... safe... but the entrance to the cave was blocked when some of the boulders from above fell because of the rumbling... and even if that weren't true, there is no chance I could get back up this. Let's hope that this cave has a second entrance... or I will be trapped in here forever!

The slope became shallower and shallower until Holly and Bulk were rolling at an ever-decreasing speed on a virtually flat area of ground. At long last, Bulk dug in his claws and came to a screeching halt. A few small pebbles that had cought in his fur rolled on ahead making little noises as the traveled down the path. Click... click... click... click... Plop! Surprised by the noise that came from the pebbles, Holly looked up. Fortunately, Nightlight's powerful glue had been strong enough to hold him to her arm, and now he shone out enough to brighten a small area around the group. Holly could finally get a good look at the cave.

A couple lumivae could be seen attached to the stalagtites and stalagmites that surrounded the small room, in a manner quite similar to the way that Nightlight was attached to Holly's arm. Just up ahead, Holly saw what had made the pebble go "plop"- a small stretch of water was emerging from the far end of the room where there appeared to be an opening into a bigger area. From that larger section of the cave, Holly could hear a gentle rumbling, like the sound a waterfall would make. Curious as to what that sound would be, Holly decided to travel on- but first she needed a break.

The young trainer returned her pandemonion and walked up closer to the water. "I need a little drink... this water can't hurt me that much, can it?" Scooping up some of the cool liquid in her hands, Holly lifted her drink to her mouth to take a sip. Within seconds she was spitting it back out and wiping her hands of on her pants.

"Peh.. YUCK! That water was salty! ...But what is salty water doing..." Holly thought back to her fall keeping in mind how long it had taken and the various degrees of the slope so that she could estimate the total distance downward they had traveled. "...Uh... maybe over a thousand miles underground?" She sat back thinking again in an effort to figure out why this phenomenon had occured.

Then it hit her. The entire cave so far had had very low ceilings, and the entrance had been pointing away from the sea. Holly knew that ocean around Gatewood town was very shallow. Thus, she concluded that there was seawater in the cave... simply because they were under the ocean!

    * * *

After a nice break, Holly decided to move on. She wanted to see what she assumed to be waterfalls of seawater leaking into the cave before it was time for her to go to sleep, and she knew that that was approaching. It had to be close to nightfall soon. A quick decision led to Holly unleashing Neptune, her posiduana, and asking him to ferry her across the water into the underground ocean. Neptune was a tall, red, lizard-like pokemon with cyan fins on his arms and legs and a long, ribbon-like fin flowing down his back. Small, black spots dusted his sides and the tope of his head, just between his yellow eyes with eerie slit pupils. In his webbed hands, Neptune held a golden trident just as tall as he was. After looking around at his surroundings in a rapid survey, Neptune understood what Holly had called him for, and lifted her onto his back without command.

It was peaceful to be riding one of her rarest and most powerful pokemon into the next room of the cave, and she was amazed once she got there. Hundreds of lumivae dotted the ceiling while a few lumoth fluttered between the groupings. A cluster of crystals off to one side, just barely close enough for Holly to see, was home to a group of sableye, and stretches of land on the edge of the ocean room were sheltering colonies of geodude and their evolutions. Dueel and Morael- large sea-green eel pokemon with a second set of jaws inside their mouths and long golden fins -were popping up to the surface every now and again to see what had come into their home.

At the center of it all, was the most spectacular sight, a brilliant island shrouded in shadow. Odd twisted trees grew on the hilly part of the relatively small piece of land, and Holly couldn't possibly understand where they had come from or how they could survive. Coarse dark grasses grew all over the island and fungi and algae grew where the land met the water. Neptune swam up to the island and let his trainer get off before being returned to his pokeball for rest. Holly wanted to take in the view herself.

Just up ahead of her was what looked like a slice taken out of one of the hills with tree brances covering it. What's that? Some kind of shelter?... And why aren't there any pokemon here? It seems like the best place in this cave to live... but it looks like they're completely avoiding it! Weird.

Hollys questions were answered after she had taken just a few more steps across the subterranean island. "You are a trainer... and you are not welcome here. Leave now." The voice made Holly nearly jump out of her skin with fear. By instinct she froze and stared at the shelter she had seen earlier, for now there was something there. All she could see of the pokemon- for it was indeed a pokemon -was it's cold, icy-blue eyes like little half-moons shining ever so dimly out of the darkness. Still stunned, Holly was disobeying the mysterious creature by not leaving, so he spoke up again in his exceedingly deep and almost echoing voice. "I told you to leave. Leave now, and never return, or I will have to force you away myself."
