As you all know the 3 stars of the first generation are Charizard, Blastoise, and Pikachu. They are all basically starters. In the other generations the stars(well I shouldn't say stars, but the pokemon on the box) are legendary and considered divine. Based upon the fact that the other generations have legendary pokemon on their covers, wouldn't it make more sense to make red version be Moltres, blue be Articuno, and yellow be Zapdos? They could even spice it up the way they did with DPPt. They could make the ultimate divinity Mewtwo be exclusively in red version and the other divinity Mew be exclusively in blue version. Then, in yellow version, both divinities would be available. I know this is a rather pointless discussion to address, but it was on my mind. What do you all think all about this?

Are the legendary pokemon on the covers for ratings? Advertisement?

Now, I know that the special games (Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum) can be thought of as complete gimmicks. What is the reasoning of the pokemon on the covers?

I like the way you think!

Personally, I think the legendaries are to make it clear to kids what pokemon they are getting, since the whole point of making different versions is to get different legendaries (Whey they don't put them on one game, i'll never know)

Yea. I remember they did that for Gold and Silver. When Ruby and Sapphire first came out, I thought that Kyogre and Groudon were the fire and water starter (3rd evolution). By the way, why wasn't groudon also a fire type?

That was weird, I never even thought about it like that. And Groudon is pure ground because of the whole team aqua wanting to expand water and team magma wanting to spread land....not fire? Which brings up the question: Why call them Team Magma if they wanted to expand the land?

Hmm, it just really depends on the star of the game. Like in crystal the star pokemon was suicune right? I think its connection to the main legendary pokemon (ho-oh, lugia) And its the same thing with emerald. Rayquaza was the star pokemon.

In my eyes the upgrades (suicune, pikachu, rayquaza, giratina) from each generation finishes off the main story line of the game.

That they are particularly the most "Famous" Pokemon or well liked in that generation or the one that fits the name.

Well, if there's Magma everywhere, it will become solid landmass, so that's why!

Too be completely honest with you, the first two generations had absolutely no plot regarding the legendaries. GSC didn't have any legendary plot until crystal. Seriously, there were no cut scenes regarding lugia or ho-oh. They were just there. No plot regarding mewtwo and mew. I think they should re-do Red and Blue again and have them revolve around legendaries. Better yet, they should have a giant pokemon game where you can travel to every region with every legendary. That would be pretty cool. And it has come to my attention that some legendaries are not one of a kind. You don't believe me? Why is are Lugia and Ho-oh found at Naval rock, and whirl islands/tin tower? Also, in the pokemon anime, there is an episode with lugia that have kids (sorry that its completely off topic.) But anyway, some legendaries deserve to have more than one position and location. Lol. thoughts all spilled out on this post

well it would of made more sense especially when they remade it into firered and leafgreen but i guess since they were the first of its kind it would be easier to put an earlier pokemon thats available so people would recognize??

The day I saw that episode the magic of Legendary pokemon was lost.

Besides that point, I liked it better when they didn't put the legendary on the box. I like main legendary of the game to be somewhat of a surprise.

Yea. And some legendaries are suppose to be not one of a kind. Like shaymin. We all saw the movie. At the end, you see dozens of shaymin come together. Also, the battle pyramid guy has regirock, regice, and registeel. It seems unheard of in the pokemon world (anime) to catch legendaries but apparently there are more than one of each of the regis. Same goes with Articuno and the other birds. The show clashes with the game. Based upon the show, there are more than one Articuno, Lugia, Deoxys (i don't consider deoxys legendary, its just an alien), Mew, Regigigas, Celebi, and others. This is hardly shown in the game at all

What bugs me is in the anime they talk about legendaries as if there are more than one.
You get confused when people are saying "Really?! YOU JUST SAW A HO-OH" As opposed to "YOU JUST SAW HO-OH" Seriously. Terribly sorry that this has nothing to do with the pokemon on the box.

Anyway, they should have named Diamond and Pearl, Time and Space (platinum would be renegade), Ruby and Sapphire should have been Land and Sea, (Emerald would be sky), Gold and Silver would be Storm and Sunshine (Crystal would be wind) and Red and Blue could be Origin (Mew on cover) and Rebirth (Mewtwo on cover) Just an Idea for ya'll.

I never understood why the put suicune on the cover for crystal. Suicune is what I consider a secondary legendary (Hey it rhymes! Whadda ya know?!) It should have been Celebi the cover calling it Pokemon Forest Version or Time Travel Version.

And are they going to make yet another generation any time soon. Every generation has a pokemon considered to be the ruler of the world. Seriously. First I thought Mew ruled the world. Than Ho-oh. Now Arceus? Which one? And by the way, Celebi was the original pokemon of time (please don't argue that Dialga controls time and Celebi travels it). My point is, there are becoming so many legendary pokemon that they don't seem special. I thought GSC had the perfect amount. When RSE came out there were wayyy too many. Seriously. There are a ton of legendary pokemon.

I think the idea is to have 'cool' looking Pokemon on the cover. When stuck with what to make the mascots of Gold and Silver, I guess they though legendaries were a better idea and then it just stuck.

As for Crystal, I guess they didn't plan ahead. They couldn't make it Celebi, because it can't even be caught in it. So all they had left was to split a trio.

The star in the first generation would be Mewtwo because of it was so uber new back in the day. The star in the second generation would be Tyranitar because it was so strong in the attacking range. The star in the third generation would be Swampert because the defense and the attack stats were so strong and unbelievable. The star in the fourth generation would be Arcues because it was announced the ''God of Pokemon'' and I say that's pretty cool that they made a Pokemon with that kind of skill.

Tyranitar wasnt a star. Sure. He was uber as anything else. But popular belief favored Lugia and Ho-oh
