    The Start of Spencer's Journey

This is my first attempt at Pokemon Fan fiction. This is the story of Spencer and how he got his first Pokemon as well as how he began talking to Pokemon. This is set roughly ten years before Ash's journey began. Please review...

    Chapter 1
It was a warm spring day in Glenforda Town in the Clough Region and today was Spencer's tenth birthday. He woke up at around 8 am that morning and went to the bathroom to get washed then dressed. He then walked downstairs and into the kitchen.

"Good morning mum, good morning dad" Spencer said as he walked over to the dining table.

"Good morning Spencer, Happy birthday" Spencer's dad said who was already sat down. "Lets eat some breakfast first then I will give you your birthday present".

"Good idea, I'm starving. And thank you." Spencer said as he sat down at the dining table. His mum was cooking a fry-up and shortly afterwards she served breakfast to the table. After breakfast was over, Spencer then said "Thanks mum, that was lovely."

"Your welcome and happy birthday love" Spencer's mum said. "Now that breakfast is over, I think its time to give you your birthday presents". She added.

They all went into the living room and Spencer sat down on the settee while his parents went to get his presents. After a short wait, his parents came back and his mum gave him her present to him. "Happy birthday love" she said as she handed it to him. Spencer opened the parcel and inside was a PokeGEAR. "Thank you very much mum" Spencer said. He had always wanted a PokeGEAR. Now it was his dad's turn.

"Now you are finally ten, I thought you should have your very own pokemon". Spencer's dad said handing him a pokeball.

"You've got me a pokemon?" Spencer said excitedly. "Can I see what it is now?"

"You sure can" Spencer's dad said. Spencer pushed the button in the middle of the pokeball and out came a Geodude.

Geodude jumped on Spencer's lap and was very happy with its new trainer. Spencer was equally happy.

"I love it. Thanks Dad, this is the best birthday present ever." Spencer said happily.

"I knew you would love it. Geodude already loves you. You two are going to get on just fine" Spencer's dad said.

"You are finally old enough to begin your pokemon training." Spencer's mum said.

"Oh I almost forgot to tell you, Nurse Joy has a Pokedex ready for you along with some pokeballs and your official trainer card. You can collect them right now if you like." Spencer's dad said.

"Yeah I'll do that now. I'll leave the PokeGEAR here for now and I'll collect it once I'm all finished at the Pokemon Center". Spencer said then recalled Geodude back to its pokeball. "I'll see you in about half an hour" Spencer said. The Pokemon Center was a ten minute walk from Spencer's house. He left the house and walked towards the Pokemon Center. He was very happy that this day has finally come and was even more happy at Geodude, his new pokemon friend and starter. He finally got to the Pokemon Center and walked through the double doors and walked over to the main desk where Nurse Joy was standing.

"Hello young man, how may I help you?" Nurse Joy said.

"Good morning Nurse Joy. I am a new trainer here. My name is Spencer Harding, I've come to collect my trainer card and Pokedex." Spencer said.

"Just a second." Nurse Joy said. She then picked up a Pokedex from under the desk and checked the ID to make sure that Spencer was who he said he was. It had already been registered before Spencer arrived to collect it. She then handed Spencer his new Pokedex, a trainer card and six empty pokeballs.

"Good luck on your new journey Spencer." Nurse Joy said smiling.

"Thank you Nurse Joy. I'm sure I'll become a great trainer" Spencer said smiling back. "I'm heading back home now. I've got some stuff to attend to at home before I set off". After saying that, he then left the Pokemon Center with his new pokedex, trainer's card and pokeballs and walked back home.

At home, Spencer's mum had already packed some clothes as well as his PokeGEAR for when he comes back.

"I'm back and I've got everything" Spencer said walking into the house and into the living room.

"Oh good. I've already packed your clothes and things" Spencer's mum said. She then gave Spencer a hug. "We're going to miss you very much. Your father has put his own PokeGEAR number in your PokeGEAR so you can keep in touch with us". She added.

"Thanks. I'm going to miss you both too. I'll keep in touch through the PokeGEAR" Spencer said.

Spencer put his bag onto his back with all his clothes and things in. "I should start on my journey now. I'll be back someday. Thank you for my presents and especially for Geodude. Bye for now." he said.

Both Spencer's mum and dad waved him off as he left to begin his Pokemon training.

    Chapter 2
Spencer Harding, a 10 year old from Glenforda Town in the Clough Region had just received his first pokemon and was finally beginning his journey as a pokemon trainer. Spencer's main ambition was to become a pokemon breeder and he had learnt many breeding skills while at Glenforda Pokemon Academy. Before leaving Glenforda Town, he visited the breeding center, which was next door to the academy. He walked up to the main recpetion desk where a young lady greeted him.

"Good morning sir. How may I help you?" She said.

"Good morning. My name is Spencer. I've just started on my pokemon journey today and I would like to order a Pokemon Breeders' Kit please," Spencer said.

"Just one second," the lady said. She walked over to the shelf behind her and took an application form, which she handed over to Spencer back at the desk. "Just fill in this form to confirm your request," She continued. She then handed Spencer a pen to fill in his form.

Spencer filled in everything he needed to in just a few minutes then handed it back. "There you go, all done," he said.

"Thank you, your breeder's kit will be ready for you in about a week. Where do you want it sent to?" the lady asked.

"If it takes a week to send, then I should be in Stockin City by that time. I'm heading south towards Hartswood City. Have it sent to Stockin City's Pokemon Center," Spencer said.

"That should be fine. Take care and have a safe and enjoyable journey wherever you go," the lady said while processing his data on her computer. Spencer thanked the lady before leaving. After a fifteen minute walk, he finally reached the outskirts of Glenforda Town and stopped for a moment. He turned around and had a look at the town he had been born and raised in for the past ten years.

"Well, this is it," Spencer said quietly to himself. "I'm finally leaving Glenforda Town. When I take my next step, I will truly begin my journey as a pokemon trainer and soon to be pokemon breeder."

He then turned his back towards Glenforda Town and walked away from his hometown and onto his new journey. After a ten minute walk, Spencer decided to take a break. He called out his Geodude who sat down beside him and they had some lunch. Spencer had a sandwich, while Geodude had some pokemon food what Spencer had made just before leaving Glenforda Town. He learnt about making pokemon food while in Glenforda Academy. After they had eaten, Spencer took out his pokedex and loaded up the file on Geodude.

"Geodude, the Rock Pokemon. Geodude are found on mountain roads and easily mistaken for rocks. Geodude has high physical defense making it difficult to beat with physical attacks." the Pokedex said.

Spencer then closed the Pokedex then put it away. He then spoke to Geodude.

"Well, it looks like its just you and me for now. I want to become a great breeder and I would love for you to help me. But first, I want to catch some more pokemon and travel the world to learn as much as I can about pokemon before I become an accomplished breeder. I want to learn all about breeding, nursing and battle techniques. Would you help me with that?" he said.

Geodude just smiled and nodded. "Thank you Geodude, I knew you'd support me," Spencer said and hugged his pokemon. He then put Geodude back in its pokeball and continued down the path and then came across a wild Charmander in the middle of the path. It looked up at Spencer and looked like it was eager for a battle. Spencer looked excited. He whipped out his Pokedex and scanned the Charmander with it.

"Charmander, the Lizard Pokemon. The flame on Charmander's tail is continously burning since birth. Charmander will die if its flame goes out," the Pokedex said. Spencer put away the pokedex and called out Geodude.

"Geodude, I choose you," Spencer shouted as he threw Geodude's pokeball releasing him. Charmander stood its ground and just stared at Geodude.

    "Geodude, use Tackle" Spencer commanded.

Geodude tackled Charmander head-on and knocked him back a little. Charmander released an Ember attack.

"Defense Curl, quick" Spencer said, which Geodude did absorbing the Ember what did little damage. "Good work, now use Dig," Spencer then ordered. Geodude dug a hole underground and jumped in it. Charmander looked around unsure where Geodude was. Geodude then tackled Charmander from directly below it. The surprised Charmander fell back. "Now tackle it again before it gets the chance to use Ember," Spencer then said. Geodude tackled Charmander knocking it down. "Good work Geodude, that's enough," Spencer said before throwing an empty pokeball. "Pokeball, Go," he said while throwing it. Charmander was absorbed into the pokeball and after a while, the pokeball stopped moving. Charmander had been captured and Spencer had a new pokemon. Spencer, very happy with his new pokemon, picked up the pokeball and put it in his belt and recalled Geodude.

"Thanks Geodude, you were great," Spencer said as he put Geodude's pokeball back in his belt.

Spencer had been walking down the same path for just under a week since catching Charmander and had finally reached Stockin City. He walked straight to the Pokemon Center, which was just a quick walk down the road. He walked in and saw Nurse Joy at the counter.

"Good afternoon Nurse Joy, would you take care of my pokemon please?" Spencer said while putting Geodude and Charmander's pokeballs on the counter.

"Sure. I'll take good care of them," She said.

"Oh I ordered a breeding kit from Glenforda Town. I was wondering if you may have it here," Spencer then said. "My name is Spencer Harding and this is my trainer card," he then added showing his I.D.

"Yes. It got here just yesterday." Nurse Joy said. She then handed Spencer a parcel from under her desk.

"Thanks a lot," Spencer said as he walked over to an empty table and examined the contents. Inside the parcel was a Pokemon Breeder's Handbook, a berry blender, a pokemon first aid kit and a handbook on basic pokemon first aid as well as some cooking equipment for making pokemon food and human food. He packed all the stuff away and after a while, his pokemon were completely recovered. He thanked and said goodbye to Nurse Joy taking all his belongings with him and decided to have a walk around Stockin City.

    FINAL CHAPTER

    Chapter 3
After taking a walk around Stockin City and meeting many different people and pokemon, Spencer decided to leave for Hartswood City down south. He discovered that Stockin City had a gym but he had no interest in gyms nor the Clough League. He wanted to learn about battle techniques and moves in his own way and had been training with his pokemon everyday. Leaving Stockin City, he headed south into the woods. While travelling through the woods, he battled many trainers and his Pokedex data increased. By now, he had seen up to 20 different kinds of pokemon. After four days, he had finally reached Hartswood City. This was where Professor Brown resided, the Clough region's professor. Spencer had come to Hartswood City mainly so he could visit Professor Brown and learn about pokemon from his research. After a short stay at the local pokemon center, he walked to the lab located on the edge of Hartswood City. He knocked on the door, which was answered by Professor Brown.

"Yes, young man. How may I help you? Professor Brown asked.

"Good afternoon Professor Brown. My name is Spencer Harding. I'm a new trainer and I would like to learn more about pokemon training. My dream is to become a pokemon breeder and I would love for you to show me some breeding and nursing skills also please," Spencer said, while showing the professor his trainer card.

"It will be my pleasure," Professor Brown said. "I'm not busy right now so I'll be glad to show you around my lab as well as the pokemon and show you some pointers."

"Thank you," Spencer said. Professor Brown then showed Spencer around the lab and the gardens and showed him some basic first aid. In this case, he showed how to put a bandage around a Pidgey's wing correctly. Spencer was shown how to make PokeBLOCKS using the berry blender he got with his breeding kit and a lot of other breeding and nursing tips. After about 45 minutes, Spencer thanked Professor Brown for his time and left the lab. While he was being taught, he had written a lot of notes in a notebook so he wouldn't forget, which he put in his bag. He had visited a few other towns before heading back to Glenforda Town. It wasn't until he reached the north of Glenforda Woods north of his hometown that he caught his next pokemon. Spencer didn't really care about catching lots of Pokemon and only wanted a select group of pokemon friends. The pokemon he caught he was Wartortle. This pokemon was part of a small community of Squirtle and Wartortle who lived in Dichen Plains, the area where Spencer was now. It wasn't an easy capture as Wartortle was physically very strong as was his special attacks. Both Geodude and Charmander were also at a type disadvantage but after a long battle, Wartortle eventually became tired out. Spencer realised that Wartortle wasn't the type that gave up easily and its strong endurance quite surprised Spencer. To stop Wartortle getting too tired and injured, he decided now was the time to catch it. He quickly threw the pokeball as Wartortle who was now sweating with near-exhaustion. Wartortle was caught and Spencer took it to the nearest Pokemon Center. Spencer stopped in that Pokemon Center that night. The next morning, everything would change. He woke up the next morning and heard a voice calling his name.

"Spencer, wake up sleepy-head," the voice said next to his bed.

"I'm up. Who said that?" Spencer said not recognised the voice. He turned around and saw Wartortle.

"So you're up," said the voice. Spencer realised what was happening and had to pinch himself to see if he was dreaming.

"Wait a minute, you can talk?" Spencer said to Wartortle shocked that he understood him.

"Huh? You can understand me?" Wartortle said equally shocked.

"Err.. yeah. Wait, are you talking pokemon language?" Spencer then asked.

"I sure am. You seem shocked. I'm shocked too. I've not known of a human to understand pokemon language." Wartortle said.

"Neither have I. This is too weird.," Spencer rubbed his eyes then went to get Geodude's and Charmander's pokeballs to send them out.

"Hey, Good morning Spencer," Geodude said. Charmander said something similar.

"You won't believe this, but I can understand you," Spencer said immediately after they had spoken.

"You can? Impossible. No human can understand pokemon language," Geodude said.

"Well obviously it isn't impossible," Spencer said.

Geodude and Charmander just looked at Spencer with shock. He had known that Geodude used the word impossible.

"Right. I'm going to get changed then we'll have some breakfast. We'll sort this out after breakfast and find out whats happened," Spencer said before recalling all his pokemon back to their pokeballs.

After getting washed in the pokemon center's bathroom, he got changed and had some breakfast. He never said anything to Nurse Joy about what happened earlier but thanked her for taking care of Wartortle the day before. He then left the pokemon center and once he found a quiet place, he took out his PokeGEAR and phoned his dad. He told his dad exactly what happened. His dad's reaction shocked him because he then told Spencer that he knew this would happen. They arranged a meeting in Tiltop Town, which was the nearest town to where Spencer was. Spencer and Spencer's dad sat down in the back of a cafe where they would not be disturbed. They both got a drink of orange juice while they sat.

"Hi Dad. It's nice to see you again, how are you and Mum?" Spencer said.

"We are just fine. Its nice to see you are fine and well too," his dad then said.

Spencer nodded and smiled. He then started to speak but quietly.

"So about what I told you earlier. You say you know why I can now suddenly speak to pokemon?" Spencer then asked.

"Yes. I do know," Spencer's dad said. "I can also understand them," he added in a very quiet voice.

"You as well? Since when? How?" Spencer asked.

"Two years before you were born, I volunteered to be part of an experiment. Me and seven other people had our DNA altered," his dad said.

"Altered? What are you talking about and what does have to do with me?" Spencer then asked.

"I'm going to cut it short. I was injected with Pokemon DNA," his dad said.

Spencer looked at him with wide-eyes. "Seriously?" he then asked.

Spencer's dad nodded. "Very serious," he said. "The experiment was designed purposely to see if it was possible for humans to be able to speak to pokemon. It was a complete success. Unfortunately Team Rocket found out about the project so we had to destroy all the equipment and files. You inherited my DNA when you were born."

Spencer didn't know what to say. He wasn't angry, he was actually quite thrilled he could talk to pokemon. Its what he always wanted to do, he never thought it would be possible though. After a short pause, he then spoke.

"Why has it took so long for me to be able to speak to Pokemon?" Spencer then asked. "If I have the DNA, then shouldn't I have been able to speak to them from birth."

"You are a human, Spencer and as a baby, the pokemon DNA would take a while to be absorbed properly in a human being. However if you were to have children, they would get the talking ability more earlier and their kids until eventually your great grandchildren would have the ability from birth," Spencer's dad exclaimed.

"Was anything saved?" Spencer then asked. "The equipment, I mean."

"Unfortunately, no," his dad said sadly. "However we did prove a point. We proved that humans talking to pokemon is possible through the right methods. We were a bit skeptical at first. We thought that mixing Pokemon DNA with human DNA wouldn't work and could be dangerous to humans. It was risky but we decided to go ahead with it anyway. The idea was simply to extract a sample of Pokemon DNA and inject it into our arms. This would, over time, be absorbed into our own human DNA and then a few days later, would be fully absorbed into our system. Three days after the experiment, we began to be able to talk to pokemon," He added.

"Wow, that's an interesting story. Too bad only a few people know about it. Just one more question. Where did this experiment take place?" Spencer asked.

"Alto Mare. It took place in Alto Mare. You've been there a few times when you were younger," his dad said.

"Oh yeah," Spencer said. He had many memories of Alto Mare. Even though he was young, he remembered his two previous times there clearly. He was there when the D.M.A was hijacked by a trainer and almost drowned in the upcoming flood.

"Thank you for sharing your story with me. Me now being able to talk to pokemon is a gift. I've always wanted to speak to pokemon and now here I am," Spencer said.

"Me too. I also believe its a gift as do all the people who took part in the experiment. You must promise now to keep everything I told you a secret. We can't have people like Team Rocket finding out there are people like us about. They would kidnap us and force us to do terrible things," his dad said.

"You're right. Well I should be getting back to becoming a pokemon trainer," Spencer then said getting up out of his seat.

"I should be getting back home too," his dad said also getting up. "Take care Spencer and your pokemon too."

"You too Dad," Spencer said. They hugged each other before going their seperate ways.

Author's Note: Please review. Sorry for keeping this short but I am ending this fic here. It was my intention to end it at this point as this was only an introductory fic for Spencer and his talking to pokemon ability. Most of what I want to write about Spencer is set in his early adulthood. I hardly have done anything for him as a kid starting out.
