I am doing a report for my school on mental illness and violence. I've been researching it for a couple weeks, but I've found that there is stuff out there, just not what I'm looking for.

Since I have a mental illness, that helped me write part of my report. BUT! I still need some information. I decided to post on PC because I have a feeling that people know some stuff about it. I have some questions that I would like answered.

• How does the media influence people to be violent?
• Do you think that people with mental illness are more likely to be violent or aggressive toward others?
• How does society influence people to be violent? (School society, home, not just gangs)

• It doesn't unless the person is mentally ill, people just blame violence on media because they don't want to blame it on themselves.
• Depending on what kind of mental illness it is, yes or no.
• If you live in a society with gangs in it, you're more likely to become some kind of gangster than if you lived in a society without them. Replace all references to gangs in that sentence and replace it with anything else to get more examples.

Even though people choose whether or not they want to be violent, the media does help influence them slightly, I think. Violent crimes rates have skyrocketed since the 1950's, and so have violence in media. It just slowly desinsitizes people into thinking that violence is more and more tolerable. That's what I think ^^;;

I don't know anything about mental illnesses. But I assume that if someone had a cancerous tumor or something that made them think that everyone was against them, that could be a reason

It all just depends. People from an inner city ghetto are obviously going to tend to be more violent than someone who lives in a hick town of 400 people.

Bullying, for one, will result in mental illness and a mind to kill — in effect, what goes around comes back around. Then again, some people use violence to attempt to get their point across and drive people away from them just because they don't want to be bothered....

Where did you get your statistics from? Because this cannot be farther from the truth.

I lived in a "small hick town," for 6 years, and violence, drugs, and gangs made up most of the population.

I live in a "ghetto" right now, and while there is violence, I'd say it's equal with any other gang in any other environment.

As for your questions, Undine:

---The media influences people with weak minds. If you are not taught right from wrong, you will succumb to anything, be it right or wrong. For example, say Johnny Boy's parents don't teach him anything, other than how to work the sattelite remote control. All of the things he learns are from a television. He sees violence, gangs...he wants it, because his mind is not strong enough to realize "this isn't right." I highly blame parents of these children, though parents aren't 100% to blame. My own parents, for example. My father was a military man...served in Vietnam. Extremely disciplined. My mother is very parental, as well. While my younger brother and I are fine, my older brother is in prison for drug trafficking, drug using, assault with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, grand theft auto, and rape. Were my parents to blame? Absolutely not. Even the best kids experiment with drugs--my brother fell into the wrong crowd. A good reason I am so against drugs.

---It depends on the mental illness. My younger brother is slightly autistic. When he was younger, he played Pokemon. My parents thought it was harmless for him. Well, turns out, he became addicted to Pokemon. For those not familiar with autism, autistic children pretty much just live in their own little world. He had a seizure from withdrawal one year when we were on vacation. He did something bad, and my father took his gameboy away. When we were at a restaraunt, he had a seizure and became dehydrated. I would say, that media influence and games and such play a part on that. He also did become violent--never physically violent, but he would threaten my family and anyone else with things he learned on the game.

---Society, like the media, only works on a weak mind. Though I would say, society's influence is stronger. I would recommend the book "Faith of the Fallen" by Terry Goodkind. It's a fiction work, but it is a great novel to see how one strong man was able to influence thousands to do what is right. Strength is infectious...but only to those willing to accept it.

Well, I didn't really look up statistics o_o;; I don't want to impose or anything ._.

I did see a video though. It said that since 1963, violent crime rates have gone up almost 1000 percent. And in my sociology class, we measured the crime rates of states with high populations with that of states with low populations. The states with higher populations almost always had higher crime rates.
