    Greetings!

It has been a little while since I decided to give Pokemon a try on console again. I used to play a lot of it, and stopped at Gold/Silver about 4-5 years ago.

With all the releases that have been marketed since, I was wondering a few things. I have purchased a Nintendo DS, so my question is:

What versions of the game, would I need to be able to catch all species, ie complete a Pokedex.

Just from doing some reading I am thinking that I will need Leafgreen/FireRed and Pearl/Diamond - is this correct? Or am I missing something out.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, thanks for your time!

    Sam-

there are also some pokemon only available in Emerald...lol

Actually, if you have Ruby and Sapphire by themselves, between them, you can get pretty much all the non-event Hoenn Pokemon. Then, you can obtain every Kanto Pokemon from Fr/Lg and the same event Pokemon offered in Emerald. Johto Pokemon can be obtained from either XD/Colosseum, FrLg, or a smattering in Ruby/Sapphire.

So, no, if I recall correctly, you don't necessarily need Emerald for a full 'dex. But you could get it anyway if you want.

    Um, okay. O_o

Anyway, it depends on what you want to do, SuperKyogre. If you want a living Pokedex in one of the GBA games first and then port across to DP, then naturally, you'll need all of the GBA games.

Otherwise, if you want a living Pokedex on DP, you'll still need past games because of a lack of several different Pokemon, including:
    - The legendary birds (FrLg/XD only) *
    - Mewtwo (FrLg only) *
    - Mew (GBA event) **
    - The Johto starters (obtainable through Emerald or breeding the Pokemon ported from Colosseum)
    - The legendary beasts (FrLg only) *
    - Lugia (GBA event/can be ported from XD and passed to the GBA games) **
    - Ho-oh (GBA event/can be ported from Colosseum and passed to the GBA games) **
    - Celebi (GBA event) **
    - The Hoenn starters (RSE only)
    - The three Regis (RSE only)
    - The Latis (RSE only)
    - Kyogre/Groudon/Rayquaza (RSE only)
    - Jirachi (GBA event) **
    - Deoxys (GBA event) **
    - Any and all event DP Pokemon * (Although this is a no-brainer.)

So, while you're partly right, there's still a need for games like FrLg in order to get all of the Pokemon. A handful of Pokemon just aren't available in DP, and some of those (which I've starred) aren't even available on Emerald. (The ones with double stars aren't even available on Emerald unless you're either willing to shark/AR your game -- which defeats the purpose of trying to get a living Pokedex to begin with -- or happen to have a time machine to take you back to when the events existed.)

Or you could get a Shark and beat the whole thing with it. But that would be too easy. I only use Sharks once I have completed he Dex. But its your choice.

Ot you could do it honestly, which is what the starter seems to be aiming for :/

You will need all games except Emerald,Gold,Silver, and Crystal to catch all the pokemon.

But in Emerald, there're some Pokémon that can't be caught in that version, but instead can be caught in Ruby/Sapphire. For example, Zangoose can only be caught in Ruby but not in Emerald.

Also, you'd need Ruby and Sapphire and even Emerald to catch Pokémon via the dongle method, which involves inserting an older cartridge (FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald) into the DS in order to catch some of the previously unattainable Pokémon in certain Routes.

    I'm pretty sure you need...

    ~Diamond
    ~Pearl
    ~Firered
    ~Leafgreen
    ~Emerald

I'm pretty sure that's all you need.

That's cool, it's been a while since I posted but my Brother has the opposites of the games so, we're set.

I should have done a little bit more research about event Pokemon and whatnot, but eh, that's part of being a Nub. ;)

let's see... I belive you can get a full Hoenn dex with just Emerald, and eieher games, but You'll still need either Zangoose (if you only have Sapphire) or Lunatone (if you have Ruby)... so unless you have access to BOTH games (or XD) somehow, it's impossible.

SamCole, please do not revive topics that haven't been posted in for over a month.
