A new metagame means lots of fun testing out new sets and unbanned Mons before they are suspect tested. Instead of testing out all the Pokemon everyone else was using I thought I'd make a team out of Pokemon that check the most common mons. The result is a team that lacks quite a few important roles but that has been a blast to play with. If you have any suggestions for improvements I would enjoy it.
Ninetales-Alola @ Choice Specs
Ability: Snow Warning
Modest Nature | 4 HP/252 Sp Atk/252 Spe
- Blizzard
- Freeze-Dry
- Moonblast
- Hidden Power Water
No one seems to be running this set and it's a shame because nothing likes switching into that Hail boosted Blizzard. I ran HP Water to hit Heatran and Nihilego on the switch mainly because most Steel types don't want to switch in on the Blizzard. Namely Ferrothorn and Skarmory are easily 2HKO'd. Moonblast can pick off a weakened Tyranitar which easily enables me to win a weather War. Hail is actually shaping up to be a cool weather this gen, mainly because Ninetales can actually abuse its own weather.
Pyukumuku @ Light Clay
Ability: Unaware
Bold Nature | 252 HP/252 Def/4 SpD
- Recover
- Toxic
- Reflect
- Memento / Soak
One of the joys of the early metagame. Getting to use stuff that's garbage cause no one knows what to expect. Shockingly though this thing is actually better than Quagsire because it isn't as luck reliant on a Scald burn. Memento is garbage though, I think I want to switch it to Soak so that Pyukumuku can easily win PP stalling. It also has no way to beat Steel types, despite having advantageous typing. It can at least easily stall out other badmons that are seeing usage. But I'll need a better wall if I can use this in the future.
Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Trace
Modest Nature | 4 HP/252 Def/252 Sp Atk
- Recover
- Ice Beam
- Thunder Wave
- Thunderbolt
Totally bodies Flygon, Garchomp, both Landorus forms, Pelipper and Dugtrio among others. P2 returns for another round as the anti-metagame duck. It is able to cripple most fighting type switch ins with paralysis. Anything without a Fighting type move is unlikely to beat it one on one. Being able to trap and remove Dugtrio is so important. I think that P2 is a little redundant with Ninetales, but it's defensively much better and can switch into Dehlmise, which Ninetales has no business doing.
Entei @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Pressure
Adamant Nature | 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spe
- Sacred Fire
- Bulldoze
- Stone Edge
- Extremespeed
I'm already sick of seeing Aegislash and Genesect but Entei roasts them quite nicely. Entei also manages to pressure nearly all of its switches since most of them hate the burn rate. Landorus-T, Tyranitar, Azumarill, etc., suddenly become rather shaky checks. Since a lot of my team struggles with Steel types, as well as opposing Ninetales, this Entei set seemed to patch up some holes for me.
Tsareena @ Leftovers
Ability: Queenly Majesty
Careful Nature | 252 HP/4 Atk/252 SpD
- Trop Kick
- Rapid Spin
- Aromatherapy
- Synthesis
Don't get me wrong. I think Tsareena is horrible. But it does give amazing role compression on some sorely needed roles. With three SR weak Pokemon, having a bulky spinner is mandatory. With all of my Pokemon vulnerable to every type of status, a cleric is necessary too. Tsareena also fairs well against Prankster users which have been a bit bothersome in the new metagame. Ultimately once OU settles I don't think I'll use Tsareena much but it's patched up some huge holes on this team.
Pinsir @ Pinsirite
Ability: Mold Breaker
Jolly Nature | 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spe
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Quick Attack
- Return
Pinsir is great for Heracross and Breloom. It's also nice for Buzzwole and Pheromosa which both disgust me. But it's a bad wincon and the new metagame with a preponderance of Steel types is unkind. It does have Entei to help with that though. And at +2 even Quick Attack wrecks Salazzle, which seems inexplicably to be a common switch in.
Overall it's a fun team. I didn't want to toy too much with new mechanics like Z moves because they honestly confuse and frustrate me. But it's an amazingly fun team to use and shocks opponents sometimes, thereby being surprisingly effective. Feel free to comment!
