Well, if anyone has ever read "The Giver", this short story takes place directly after the events of that. I have to write this for a school project due Tuesday, so I need your feedback soon!

"Jonas.. Jonas... Gabriel..". The name grew softer as the day went by. As customary, the residents of the community chanted the name of their dead Reciever. This meant there had been 2 attempts of a new reciever that were unsuccessful. Even though Jonas's death was accidental, there were still memories now floating in the air. The community was slightly scared for their own well being. Whenever someone with memories dies, the memories they "owned" would be given back to the community. There was a manditory meeting that afternoon for all members of the community.

They gathered in the auditorium, Lily still looked heartbroken at the fact she had lost her older brother. They would more than likely be given a new child for the family unit, but that didn't matter. Lily wanted Jonas, the real Jonas, and nobody else. "Jonas.. Gabriel.. Jonas... Jonas.. Gabriel..". They still continued to chant their names, growing softer and less often each time. Even though Lily was only nine, she was thinking hard. It was unknown how Gabriel died, and Jonas all of a sudden disappeared. The two put together just didn't make sense. The pieces of the puzzle just didn't connect.

"Thank you all for gathering", the Giver stood high on stage, with pain in his eyes. "I am here to warn you all. As you may know, when my previous reciever applied for release, all of the memories she had recieved were transmitted to the community. Well, I was with her for 5 weeks, however I was with Jonas for a year. Jonas recieved more pain than she ever did. Jonas recieved warfare, famine, distress, all of these pains are unknown to all of you, and no form of medication can relieve this pain. I hope you all can withstand this, and hopefully, it will make us grow stronger together. Dismissed."

Family Units fleed from the auditorium, most of whom were shaking. They were frightened, scared of pain, that pain would corrupt them with no solution. Lily walked out with her family unit, who now studdered when they spoke "J-J-Joh-n-nas.. G-G-Gabr-Eh-iel", Lily on the other hand, was unaffected. She continued to piece together the thoughts in her mind. 'Jonas dead, Gabriel Missing, supposedly dead. What are the odds this all happened at the same time?'. Lily rode home behind her parents on her new bicycle. 'Maybe Jonas took Gabriel out to the river with him? No.. Jonas couldn't take Gabriel, the nurturers wouldn't let him. Unless Jonas sneaked him out, but not even Jonas is ignorant enough to take a toddler down to the river", she chuckled. As they continued their ride home, Lily's Father had to walk, because his bike had mysteriously disappeared. He would apply for another one tomorrow.

That night after dinner, the family unit had their daily feelings sharing ritual. Mother was the first to participate, "I feel distress, sadness at the fact we will never see Jonas again." "Thank you for sharing", Lily and Father chanted. Father was next, "I feel sadness, and fear, fear of the Jonas's memories that'll be spread to us", "Thank you for sharing". Lily looked scared to go next, she knew it was against the rules to lie, but she knew she'd get in trouble for trying to piece together this situation. "I feel sadness, I miss Jonas and Gabriel already, and I will forever". She tried to be as honest as possible, but she knew no one could handle the entire truth.

As she went to bed that night, she grabbed one of her school notebooks and a pencil. She wrote the whole thing out. "Jonas Fell into a River on a bikeride and died. Gabriel mysteriously disappeared. Maybe Gabriel was with Jonas? But that doesn't explian where Gabriel's body is at, he would have been strapped into the child's seat, but the straps weren't broken." She looked at all of these clues, then thought of another, Fathers bike was missing. She added that to the list, and rethought out the entire situation. 'Jonas staged the whole thing! Jonas placed his bike on the side of the river to make everyone believe he had died. In the meantime, he was really riding out with Gabriel on Father's bike, but that still doesn't explain where they went..". She put the book up and layed down in her bed. She then had an idea, 'If anyone knows where they went.. The Giver does...'

When Lily awoke the next morning, she was eager to go see the Giver. She grabbed her jacket, and buttoned it. A cool wind whipped at her face as she shut the door. She grabbed her bike and strolled off to the Annex room. When she walked in, a friendly receptionist greeted her. "Well hello there! How can I help you today?" Lily looked up, with large, frightened eyes. "Y-yes, I'd like to see the Giver p-p-please." "I'm so sorry!", she spoke disapprovingly, "We're not allowed to send everyone into the Annex room, only certain members of the community!" Lily spoke persuasively, "Could you just ask him if I can come in? I'm Jonas's sister…" The receptionist looked at Lily, nodded and spoke softly, "Go on in.."

The Giver was lying on his side, his face hidden from her, on the couch. Lily looked amazed at all he had. The books, the furniture, the tables, it was all so foreign. "Mr. G-Giver Sir?". He didn't responded, she tried again, "Sir?". After a few failed attempts, she poked him in the arm. His skin was cold, almost freezing to the touch. She then grabbed his cold hand and shook it a bit. A rolled over onto his back, and she saw it then. The Giver was dead.

She ran out of the room, screaming and crying. "HE'S DEAD!". The receptionist ran toward the room, and reacted the same as Lily. She alerted the community, she informed them this meant ALL the memories are now floating out, and will soon be received by the entire community. Screams were heard from everywhere, the whole community was now in a full-scaled riot. Lily looked disappointed now. Unlike everyone else, she wasn't afraid of the memories, she was afraid that now, Jonas was gone. She now had no way of finding Jonas. All of a sudden, Lily got a massive headache. The pain was almost unbearable, but after about ten or so seconds, it was over. She had never felt something so weird. She heard a faint tune being played. It was so unfamiliar, but so wonderful all at the same time. It was the paramount of all the things she had heard her entire life! A voice spoke to her inside her head, "That's Music." 'Music…', Lily thought.

She ran around the entire community. By now everyone had the Giver's memories. Some had very terrible memories, it was a long line of people applying for release. Lily ran up to everyone, "Music! Music! Music!!!". Sadly, Lily was the only person to receive music, so she had nobody to share it with. Everyone was too busy with the commotion of these memories, nobody was working.

Lily had an idea, she began riding her bike, all the way out of the community. She kept pedaling, the only thing keeping her spirits high was the newly found music. She strolled off during the heat of the day. A voice had spoken to her, she knew where Jonas off. She was riding off the Elsewhere. She knew Jonas appreciate music.
