Variables and Using them to affect characters question

Hello again,

So I've been working on ideas for my Pokemon game and I had a question.

I know it requires variables but how would I go about having characters react and responding differently based on answers?

To sum it up I'm wanting to add a dating element to my Pokemon game and I'm just wondering how I would go about it.
