As I awoke from what felt like an eternity of unconsciousness, I found myself engulfed in an ominous darkness that seemed to swallow me whole. It was a disorienting experience as if I had been transported to a realm where all sensory perception ceased to exist. I strained my senses in every direction, but there was no sight, no sound, not even the faintest touch to ground me in reality.
In that daunting moment, the unsettling thought of my demise crept into my mind. However, as I pondered the absence of typical afterlife manifestations, I realized that this was not the end. There was no blinding light, no celestial presence – just an eerie emptiness that left me suspended in a limbo between life and whatever lay beyond.
Amidst this disconcerting stillness, a new realization began to take hold: the possibility that I was ensnared within the intricate confines of a dream. The very idea of being trapped in my subconscious realm seemed plausible, yet the complete absence of any sensory perception left me bewildered, with no tangible connection to the world around me.
Within this surreal dimension, time seemed to lose all meaning, stretching on endlessly in a disorienting eternity. It prompted me to reflect on the curious ways in which humanity fritters away precious moments – the idle pursuits, the relentless chase for material wealth – while I remained isolated in this enigmatic abyss, oblivious to the passage of time beyond.
Isolated from the world, I yearned for the familiar touch of the elements that once defined my reality – the boundless sky above, the scent of rain, the gentle embrace of a breeze. It was then that I realized that in this uncanny state, the very essence of existence eluded me, rendering my plight akin to a fate worse than death.
The room was alive and bustling with sounds. Itzal walked over to his desk and grabbed some Jacks and a small bouncy ball. Stood in front of a small table in front of Viveka's bed. Spreading all ten Jacks around the table.
"I'm going to see how many of these Jacks I can scoop up before the ball bounces twice." He didn't take his eyes off Viveka.
He then allowed the ball to drop from his hand onto the table reaching for a green one. Garbing the ball in the same hand as the jack. He did this again with a blue one successfully. Continued until he finished the game.
"Hey did you see that looks like a lot of fun right?... Right?" He said his arms spread out as if he had just finished a tap dance. No responses. Itzal snapped his figures three times in front of her face. Once again no response.
Itzal then sat down on the bed. Stroking his hand through her soft feathers. The creak of the door announced the arrival of someone carrying a heavy bucket, and soon the room was filled with the soothing sounds of water sloshing and the rhythmic dripping of a saturated sponge.
With that Itzal stood up he navigated through the maze of his cluttered desk, reaching for his worn clipboard amid the chaos, only to be captivated by the unexpected sight of a single red rose delicately resting on its surface.
"Right company policy." He whispered to himself.
Turning his attention back to his work, Itzal was enveloped by the serene, calming sound of the sponge being gently pulled from the water, followed by soft squishing sounds as it made contact with Viveka's chestnut brown feathers. Not a single twitch accompanied her touch. A faint click resonated in the room as Itzal diligently jotted down the necessary information.
Progress Report
Experiment 0380
Subject: Viveka
Project: Wildlife Initiative
Preliminary Assessment Before Surgery
The test subject underwent surgical procedures to become the Pokémon, Viveka, as part of the Wildlife Initiative project. Before the operation, the individual agreed to the transformation in exchange for a cure for CP. The patient had been struggling with self-regulation and equilibrium, issues expected to improve after the surgery.
After the surgery, the patient displayed a lack of awareness and disorientation. It was unclear to what extent her sensory functions were compromised. Further intervention is necessary to address the lack of responsiveness, particularly concerning auditory function.
It is crucial to ensure the well-being of our wildlife center by successfully integrating these Pokémon. Our primary objective is to demonstrate the potential for mutual benefit between Pokémon and humanity. The patient's lack of awareness highlights the need to rectify this before introducing her to the public.
Reflecting on the significance of their work, Itzal was filled with a sense of awe before continuing to write the last bit of the report. Thanks to Fauna Co., we remain committed to realizing His Majesty's vision of Pokémon and people evolving separately.
I slowly regained consciousness, surrounded by muffled voices and distant noises. The room was adorned with wallpaper featuring a warm desert theme, complementing the comfortable room temperature.
"Itzal greeted me with a smile and said, "Ah, welcome back to the waking world, sleeping beauty. How are you feeling?"
I didn't respond right away just surveyed the room, I noticed several doctors standing a few feet away from the bed. Their expressions radiated joy and success. I wondered whether they were proud of my recovery or simply relieved to have pulled me out of the void. Perhaps it was a mix of both.
My muscles felt relaxed, perhaps it was the positive vibe in the room. Upon the smiling faces of this medical team that makes me feel this way. "I feel relaxed right now."
"That's good to hear," Itzal said before he walked over to his cluttered desk and retrieved something, then approached my bedside. "Here, take this," he instructed. As I complied, I beheld a long deer snout and thick, fluffy chestnut-colored feathers covering my entire head.
In disbelief, I exclaimed, "No, no, no, no!" I hurriedly moved to the end of the hospital bed, feeling the soft down against the pillow. Aghast, I discovered a black-feathered bird tail and a pair of tail fins resting behind it. "What is happening? This must be some mistake," I protested, dropping the mirror on the bed. I looked towards Itzal. "Please, I don't want this."
Itzal raised his hands in a calming gesture. "Shhh, calm yourself."
Feeling a hand grasp my paw, one covering the top and the other at the bottom, I was urged to look at the woman focused on me. She maintained unbroken eye contact and guided me through deep breathing, offering gentle reassurance. Her hands slowly released from mine, and my gaze shifted to Itzal. I closed my eyes, following the breathing instructions once again. The nurse gave me a comforting thumbs-up. "Listen, I wanted the surgery to fix my CP, not to be transformed into," I gestured up and down at arm's distance, "this Pokémon hybrid...thing."
Itzal let out a sigh, holding a clipboard and adjusting his glasses. "Dear, you signed the papers, thereby granting permission for this procedure," he explained, showing me the clipboard for a moment before flipping it back around.
Aware of my consent, I reiterated, "I am well aware of what I signed." The other doctors exchanged glances as if waiting for a ticking time bomb to go off.
"Do you?" He asked, a grin like that of a hungry wolf across his face.
"I simply wish to return to my previous appearance. I feel unfamiliar in this new body," I spoke through gritted teeth.
He cocked his head as if to study me before looking at his team. "Please leave us," Itzal commanded sharply, snapping his fingers. Without a word, the other doctors promptly exited the room, and the door clicked shut as it was locked.
His gaze briefly shifted to the clipboard in his hand before returning to me. "Please know that your former name will no longer be used. You will now be known as Viveka. Do you like it? I chose it for you."
"Viveka," I repeated, savoring the distinct syllables that now defined me. After testing my new name, I turned my attention back to Itzal. "Let me guess," I said with a touch of exasperation. "Company policy, right?"
"You've got it," he agreed, a hint of amusement in his eyes, but his demeanor swiftly shifted back to seriousness. "I understand this is a lot to take in please rest for now." He pulled the blanket over me. "you've got a big choice to make later."
With that, he turned and walked out of the room, the sound of the door opening and then closing right behind him.
"What was with this company? A name change and turned into a Pokemon. I'll find out more in the morning," I thought as the darkness took me.
"0380, no wait, what's her real name again?" the nurse shouted, causing me to startle awake. She turned to me. "I'm sorry dear," she said, grabbing and lightly patting my paw with her other hand.
"Viveka," came a sharp voice from outside the room.
I rolled my eyes. This came from the woman who helped me calm down earlier but couldn't remember my name. I guess not everyone gets the memo on these name changes.
"Itzal had something important he wishes to discuss with you," she said, a small smile resting on her lips.
"Excellent. I can't wait to get this whole thing sorted out," I said, tossing the blanket off of me. Even with the blanket off, the room felt warm and comfortable, like the beach on a summer day. "Do you have any more information on what he wanted to tell me?" I could feel the excitement spread across my face. My paws were holding onto the railing of the hospital bed. I could feel my tail flutter from this news.
"Nope, that wa-"
Crack, snap. "Whaa," I heard something clatter to the floor.
"I've got you. It's okay, I've got you," she said again in a motherly voice. I opened my eyes and saw a light cream-colored belly. Looking up, I was now met with a face resembling a Kangaroo.
I could feel my jaw drop while she slowly and carefully put me back onto the bed. "Y-Y-You're a Kangaskhan. How'd you do that? How did you shift from human to Pokemon just like that?" I said in a panic.
"Yes, like you, I was once a novice employee here at Fauna Co. You have to have the medical treatment to work here," she spoke with a sense of softness in her voice, looking upward. "It sets a good example for the rest of the world, you know?"
She turned to look at me again, holding out her palms flat. I placed both my paws in hers. "Take a moment to think how Latias and Latios transform, do you know?"
I closed my eyes in thought. "Latias and Latios are known to change their appearance using down that refracts light."
"Very good, then it should be a simple change for you," she said in a teacher-like voice.
I shifted my body slightly to where I felt the most warmth in the room. When I opened my eyes again, I could see my legs. I slowly swung my legs over the bedside. As the nurse helped me off, I quickly let go of her hands.
"Thank you for helping me for the last two days," I said in a hushed tone. I couldn't bear to look her in the eyes, just staring at the colorful triangles on the hospital floor. I felt my face flush with embarrassment over something I should have been able to figure out myself.
"You're welcome dear, the pleasure is all mine. Are you ready to meet with Itzal?"
I nodded as we headed out the door.
