Dicsuss and comment on today's second US Pokemon episode, #368: Judgement Day

Okay. To me, this was one of the badly dubbed anime episodes and the Japanese made a few crack ups on the art.
1 Riceballs into sandwiches made me nearly want to beat up my sister's boyfriend who said, "They were never riceballs!" And plus rice beats some crappy American sandwiches anyday.
    2 dub Jimmy, nuff said
3 the fact that they didn't point out how Magikarp was a shiny
    Basically that was about it.
I'm afraid I'm turning into a 4kids hater cept for some exceptions
    sorry if i offended anyone

Yeah, I'd have to agree. Well, maybe except for 1 & 2. Also, you'd think the gang should've checked to see if the Mossdeep-bound ship left while they were still in Lilycove, but it wasn't all too bad. And I was surprised when Jimmy showed his Cascadebadge to 'em. And now Advanced Battle's set to start next Saturday...

Actually, the dub didn't bother me. It was the writing of the Japanese script.

As everyone knows, Lilycove City is the biggest city in Hoenn. Full of shops, the Magma/Aqua main base, and the contest hall. They were barely there for the Contest and that's it. No other depth into the other dimensions of the city. Conversely, the Kanto equivalent, Viridian City, had what? Three episodes to it? And if not, look at the other Hoenn cities, Rustboro had three episodes, covering the Gym, the school, and Devon nicely. Dewford...plenty, 13? Although since Slateport (which covered Magma's attack on the Museum and that's it), they've been skimping on the cities' other dimensions, Fortree is quite noticable of this, with the treehouses. We don't go in them, and observe the uniqueness but focus on a do nothing carnival, and being Lilycove is the largest city of all and focus on only one aspect of it, just infuriates.

And now they go to Mossdeep without any exploration? Sighs.

That rant aside, the episode is adaquate, Jimmy (voiced subtly by Darren Dunstan) is interesting in that his luck doesn't fuel any ego problems. He seems happy go lucky, as idiotic as that may sound. And nice to see the three Kanto starters again, curious they do not all evolve and pour on the Rocket abuse, since the series loves to abuse them Rockets.

Nice mechanics issues too: The Cascade Badge is a nice treat and could have been nice foreshadowing but oh well. The Rockets' Poke Ball mecha is reminicent of Oak's tri-Poke Ball setup at the beginning of the series. The school played an aspect we don't get in depth much, Pokemon judging.

Plus Ash and Brock battling, been a while to see such a treat. Ironic Brock is using water Pokemon, considering that's how Ash beat him in their Gym match.

Although the title is misleading with the overlooming Groudon/Kyorge showdown and that title should be fitting for the one of the two parter.

Not a season finale (the previous one would have been a nice way to end the season) but a decent followup and would have been a nice premiere.

    7/10.

errr... Dark Weezing? I think you posted through a thread that was a month old(maybe just little downage...)

    The Magikarp Was so cool.
He said: "A weird colored magikarp was stuck in my clothes!"
If Jimmy eaten the sandwich or Wartortle ha.. They wouldn't of found Ivysaur.(Maybe)

To answer that, individual episode/manga discussions (but in this case, episode discussions) are the one part of a board that should, I believe, remain fluid, no matter if it takes people forever to review them, because there is always fresh angles to explore. If it is a consolation, I have spoken to PPNSteve of this matter privately (well, the episode discussions anyway) and he agrees. Ask him yourself.

I review episodes, (I'm more versed in Teen Titans but any series really) and give my best spin on the episode and make you think hopefully. Normally, I write long reviews and put more thought than I should but Pokemon episodes...give or take, depending on the content. If there is something to write about. I can produce some of my Titans episode reviews to show how much I put myself into this if asked.

Anyway, moving on. Given the series' haphazard dropping of Shining Pokemon and the fact they are rather irrelevant as far as the series goes, (the Red Gyarados was a plot point and introduced the Shining Pokemon concept so thus, that is exempt) I didn't feel the Magikarp was special but nice they haven't forgotten.

Although they could have picked something more lucky, Shining Chansey or something to play on Jimmy's lucky theme. And yeah, it's all about the randomness of things, which feds Jimmy's luck, he could do something completely different or really something so minute and everything could change at the drop of a hat.

It's just "right place, right time" kind of thought to it.

That's besides the fact the thread technically isn't a month old anyway. =o

    Indeed, thank you, Tetsuya.

Another note I've observed: Anyone notice how snappish Ash was to Jimmy because of the ruling over the pseudo battle? I think that's the first time a ruling was made against him in the series (or a negative one against one period). I can understand Ash's defensiveness, I've been there in the TCG myself, but couldn't he pull back in that moment of clarity? Everyone has done that when someone immediately points out a flaw in the heat of the battle. Yes, he apologized but not until much later.

Of course the series has put off the Sleep factor in battle forever (the Flannery showdown), so I'm glad they're slowly catching up to their own edicts.

But yes, that quite bugged me.
