This is really more of an essay than a Fan Fiction. After reading some work by another PC member, I began to wonder why trainers seek the life they lead. And so I did some inward searching and came up with an answer, which I put in the form of this essay. I put as much passion and intellect into this as I could muster, and I hope you enjoy reading it.
What is a Trainer?s Purpose?
A Contemplative Essay by Sean Castor. (Pogiforce-14)
. What is a Trainer?s purpose? A Pokemon trainer travels the world and catches Pokemon, becoming strong and winning battles. But why do they do it? Fame? Money? Or is it something more? When the fame is gone and the money is spent, what is that person left with? Is it for entertainment that these young adults embark on a quest to capture these creatures? There are many other sports and hobbies these young people may pursue. Football. Basketball. Hockey. But it is not these sports that they undertake, where they are confined to a court or field and play against other humans where the fastest runner, tallest shooter, and strongest tackler wins. They choose to be a Pokemon Trainer, where it?s not your strength of body, but your strength of mind. Where it?s not the fastest feet, but the fastest reflexes. Where it?s not the biggest player, but the biggest heart. These are all qualities a Trainer must have to be great. This Essay attempts to understand the logic, or perhaps not the logic but the emotions involved with becoming a Pokemon Trainer and striving to reach the ranks of Pokemon Master
Point 1: The Pokemon Themselves.
. To understand Pokemon is to understand nature. Each Pokemon represents a force of nature and requires it?s trainer?s respect. A trainer deals with the forces of nature as he or she goes on their way. A snowstorm, a desert, a forest. They face all these and more on their travels. And so it is that the trainers learn to make peace with Mother Nature and learn her secrets in order to live peacefully in her presence. In this same way they learn to make peace with their Pokemon and become friends that share a bond that cannot be broken by any hardship. So is it the bond with Pokemon that makes people seek a life as a trainer? But then the question arises as to why they wish for these bonds. What makes the youth leave the safety of their homes and endure the hardships of nature to form a bond they may never find? No one is certain.
Point 2: Pokemon Battles.
. Why do Pokemon battle? They do not commonly wage battles in the wild, yet under human control it is a small, virtual war amongst the Pokemon. Is it our human thirst for violence that makes us force our Pokemon into battles where they may be burned, paralyzed, poisoned, and exposed to other forms of painful techniques? Yet if that were the case, why is it our Pokemon willingly obey our every command unless they believe us to be inadequate? One can only surmise that our goals are the same. Yet if the Pokemon are peaceful by nature, then does that mean that we also seek a greater purpose from battle? That from this we achieve something more than battle experience? What sort of higher purpose is it? If a greater purpose exists in battling, then the Pokemon League is justified. If not, then it is no different than the bloody Roman coliseums of old. The society for Pokemon Battles must understand completely why they battle, for if they don?t then it is nothing more than pointless suffering that leads the trainer to no place he or she wants to go.
Point 3: Trainer Experience
. A Pokemon Trainer faces many things on their journey. They may come across a robbery, they may help a struggling farmer, they may discover legendary Pokemon, they may even save the world. And on their travels they meat a wide variety of exciting and unique Pokemon and people. So is it the experiences that one has that makes a trainer take this journey? It is possible. To develop into a great human being, one must have many experiences that teach them what is best in the world. It fills the heart and soul with heart-warming memories that one can use to better themselves and bitter rememberings to avoid repeating wrongs. By experiencing life to the fullest, they in turn become greater Human beings.
. In conclusion, I have found that there is a greater purpose to battling. Trainers battle not just for the exhilaration of the fight, but for the experience gained by working with the forces of nature and for the enforcement of the relationship between a trainer and his Pokemon. In this way, they learn more about nature and themselves as people, so that they may better themselves and those around them. It is a spiritual reason that Trainer?s take up this profession. For although they have nothing physical with which to remember, they have the good times in their life to keep forever more. By becoming a Pokemon Trainer, one can gather lifelong friends that will be loyal through thick and thin and live a full and happy life. It is for these reasons that an old, dying Pokemon Trainer may look back on his life, see all the good times and rich memories he has, remember the Pokemon whom he befriended and loved like family, and die a happy man.
