    I'd personally choose Chimchar because of its advantages over the others.
     
    I prefer treecko as grass, totodile as water, cyndaquil as fire for starters.

    Most im for treecko.

    I''ll go with what shurikenway did

    Grass: Chikorita
    Fire: Charmander
    Water: Piplup

    My favorite overall is Piplup, mostly because of it's evo Empoleon
     
    Totodile for me, definitely. Feraligatr was my best Pokemon in GSC, and I still think it looks cool. :D
     
    I don't like any of them, but if I had to choose, I'd go with Empoleon. Twelve resistances, and a l33t-looking metallic emperor penguin with a trident for a face? Yes.
     
    I don't like comparing regions, but for each generation, here is my favorite:

    Squirtle
    Totodile
    Mudkip
    Piplup

    I'm not a fan of Water-type Pokémon, really. But with starters, they all seem to be the coolest ones.

    @ Shadowdragon: What do you mean Chimchar has advantages over the others?

    Also, if it's about starters in general, this should be in the Pokémon General forum.

    I like treeko, he looks kinda cool. However, I also like my infernape (a.k.a furball) - fighting and fire, speed.
     
    Statwise the top three best starters are as the follows for total add up of base stats
    A three way tie beetween
    Charizard
    Typhlosion(acualy same base stats as Charizard)
    Infernape
    but eather way I have always loved typhlosion ever since gold/silver came out
     
    Chimchar probably does have the competitive advantage, but I will always take Charmander, he was my first ever starter (other than Pikachu, but that's not on the list)
     
    Moved to Pokémon General since it doesn't directly concern Diamond/Pearl only.
     
    For each region
    Charmander
    Cyndaquil
    Mudkip
    Chimchar
     
    Piplup is adorable, but I'd probably have to go with Charmander. I've liked it longer and unlike Piplup, I actually like its evolutions too. o_o

    My favourite starter remains as Pikachu though. :[

    edit: Looks like people are going by region. In that case, Totodile is my favourite GSC starter and Torchic is my favourite RuSa starter.
     
    First Gen: Bulbasuar
    Second Gen: Cyndaquil
    Third Gen: Torchic
    Forth Gen: Piplup (Who doesn't want a Water/Steel Pokemon?)
     
    Wow that was really hard to pick one.

    I went with Squirtle as it was my first ever Pokemon

    Water - Squirtle
    Fire - Torchic
    Grass - Treecko

    Why?

    torchic is sweet for fire then piplup for water, and treeko for grass, but torchic evolves into blazican who is awesome
