What sets are worth collecting?

Greetings all. As I stated in another thread, I've recently started up my collection of cards again which has remained untouched for about 10 years. I'm pretty out of the loop, and am wondering with all these sets and expansions - which ones would be worth collecting? I'm not really interested in collecting every single card, but I'd just like the ones that were considered 'useful' or 'good', e.g. I've heard bad things about the Call of Legends expansion.

At the moment, I'm focusing on completing my base, jungle and fossil sets. I'll definitely be getting Black and White cards, and I imagine picking up the base sets for Platinum and HGSS would be a good idea too. Any others?

It depends on what your goal is in collecting cards; are you trying to make complete sets for your collection, or do you want playable cards to either play with or trade/sell?

I don't really know what my goal is. I'm not expecting them to be worth anything later on, I know its unlikely that their value will go up significantly than what they are now.

Me and my girlfriend playing with decks is quite likely, so for the moment I guess I'd like to collect sets that are popular / useful for playing with.

Ok, well competitive cards span across several sets. Platinum is the most popular right now because it has the most important trainers/supporters to play SP pokemon, but the actual pokemon are in platinum, rising rivals, and supreme victors. If you're mostly into collecting and just want to kind of play together on the side, I would suggest collecting the platinum block which includes platinum, rising rivals, supreme victors, and arceus. It has most of the competitively played cards in it, and you still get a lot of nice collector's pieces like secret rares.
