I was testing my GB Color and my copy of Silver ready for an extended holiday I am going on. While my handheld worked, Silver had died (or rather refused to save). Instead of simply replacing it I decided to get Sapphire. I then added Pearl to my order when I found out that I could use my DS to trade between the two games and ebay had both of these available brand new a lot cheaper than most places charge for one game.

Anyway, it has been years since I've played Pokemon. While I am awaiting my new games to arrive I am re-playing Blue but I imagine these new games are a lot different to what I remember. What can I expect to get out of these newer versions and what advice would you give to a newbie with a vague memory of pokemon?

well just think of it like this :P

everytime someone makes a 2nd game or something its usually no different but alot of updates. In my eyes its really quite the same, someone with a vague memory should also get a hang of it again.

Yeah so basically in pearl just more things to do and different places to go, as well as the online trading and battling its become easier to get the pokemon you want. with the different days and day and night settings like the old times are still here so, coming around at different times to play it comes with different results with catching pokemon and items.

Pearl and saphire are just more of a challange to get through the game and catch the pokemon in my eyes. I loved saphire and i still think at the moment its better then the DS games, but i still havn't completed it.

Its basiclly the same, 8 badges, beat elite four, then go find the rare pokemon etc etc.

There were events online you get items for pearl and pokemon. but i think they stopped that now, for Platinium events now. i think.

to be honest, as like most games you learn going through the game in a way. even new players are made easy. and tutorials are basically given to you in the games with the more updated stuff. Specially ones on DS

I'm going to start off with Sapphire and play that through. As I've done Kanto and Johto, I'm guessing that Hoenn (hopeful I've spelled those names right) would be the best place to start. I've just been watching while grinding my Blue team up a series of Youtube videos showing a guy playing Sapphire just to give me an idea of an basic changes.

I'm looking forward to the whole online aspect. I was the only one in my circle of friends to ever get into Pokemon so I never got to do trades or battles and I've been sat here grinding this Haunter wanting it to become a Gengar. I think Gengar is just awesome.

By grinding do you mean level grinding? I think haunter doesn't evolve through level up, but through trade only =/

    But, yeah, gengar is awesome.

Also note that in pearl attacks aren't physical or special by type, but by common sense. (For example, fire punch is now physical, while shadow ball is now special)

Myself didn't know that lol, thanks for that :P

And yes, saphire is a good game in my eyes so best start with that.

I wish i knew the wep key for my comp so i could start trading from platinium =/

Yeah Lvl grinding - I know my Haunter can't become a Genger but it doesn't stop me wishing it will. In the "old days" I also had a Gameboy along side my color which I would use to trade to Yellow but its long since gone to tech heaven.

Sounds an interesting development though adds even more I have to learn about the game.
