3rd Gen what the hell is pattern bush about?

its just full of trainers, i was hoping for some uber secret passageway or something if you could work it out.
i went and drew the places with and without grass on a grid on a sheet of paper and got a load of crappy lines and stuff that make no sense at all.
so what is the point of this strange place anyways other than battles and wild pokemons?

It's just an area for catching pokemon/battling trainers. It's a bit of a reference to crop circles and what not, but beyond that, it has no special purpose besides adding pokemon to your dex.

Uhh... if you were to ask about "Why is this here?" to every single game, the answer would be "It is a minor detail that has been added to make the game more interesting."

I mean, if you took out all of the minor details, the game would be extremely boring.

It's a nice place where you battle a lot of bug Pokemon and catch the rare Heracross.

Its also a place to catch Ledyba and Spinarak which (correct me if I'm wrong because I've not played it for ages) are only available there. Same with Heracross.
