what's the most efficient way to breed a female pokemon?

I have a female totodile and I need to breed another one. how can I do this with the least amount of time and effort?

- is there an item I can use to raise the chances?
- I've read something somewhere about just save right before the daycare guy calls and then go get the egg and hatch it. if it's not the wanted one, try again. does this work?
- any other tips on breeding?
