I was messing around in fire red and i used cut. All the tall grass around me was cut down! whats the point of that???

It's an alternate use to cut--it cuts the grass so you don't have to go through it. It's been around for 7 years... xP

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it around since the Red/Green/Blue generation? And didn't they come out in like..1995 in Japan, which was over 12 years ago now, not 7 as you alluded?

    You're kidding right? .o.
    It actually CUTS GRASS?!
    I've never head of this use before, I thought it was a crap HM like Flash o.o;;
    Does this work in S/R/E?

It's really funny how I never noticed that XD
Once I cut something down, I never bothered to ever use that HM or Pokemon ever again until I needed it.
Does Flash do anything else as well? It's equally as annoying...
wow, this is really something new :P

No, flash doesn't do anything besides light up caves outside of battle..in battle it's a hell of a crappy move, does nothing other than to lower accuracy slightly, if that's what you mean.

I wish they would just totally get rid of it. It's really pretty useless. Or did they intend for HM slaves? No real party would actually keep Flash; it's so worthless.

That's why they made it a TM(rather than HM as with the previous gens) in DP, and it's purchasable in the Department store to my belief, meaning that no longer does anyone need to visit the Move Deleter for this crappy move! Yay!(lawl)

I think that Flash is pretty useful in low-level fights in-game where you're pretty outlevelled because it's your first time playing the game. I usually put it on my Abra / Kadabra to fill up a slot while I'm going through the game for the first time.

    Everyone knows Teleport is worthless.
At least Flash is better than DeFog, its DS replacement.

I never really bothered with cut 'till I needed it, but I was thinking of getting some new Hm Slaves (currently use Tropius + Gyarados) for a poke with Hyper cutter and the ability to fly or learn the three water HM's.

The reason for hyper cutter you ask? I think it increases the radius when you use cut on grass (may be emerald only)

Umm...no, just no. Flash is not good by any stretch of imagination. Sand-Attack was crappy enough, but relying on a move that might make your opponent miss which also has the chance of missing itself? That's way too many 'if's to be even remotely useful. x.O What the Abra line needs for fillers is special attacks like Shock Wave, Energy Ball etc. If they don't KO or incapacitate what they attack they're pretty much dead anyway. As for De-Fog; it's not a replacement for Flash, it's just another freaking crappy HM to add to the collection. x.x Flash was demoted to a nomi-HM, but there are Flash places in D/P too, just not as many of them. :\

But yeah, agreeing with Chibi-chan: if they want HMs used they should actually make the moves themselves not suck. (Thus far, the only ones that have succeeded in this regard are Surf and Waterfall, although the new and slightly improved Rock Smash is sometimes used to cover up for crappy movepools). Cut, Fly, Strength, Flash and Defog all remain utter garbage, though. Incidentally, Cut is the only HM with an optional overworld use (Excluding the one-place-only effects of Flash and Rock Smash (Used to open the paths to Registeel and Regirock respectively)), but there are also the nomi-HM moves Teleport (Essentially a more conditional Fly), Dig (Free Escape Rope effect), and Sweet Scent (Gives you an instant wild pokémon encounter if you are in a place where they appear, which, might I add, comes in very handy in the Safari Zone since it doesn't count as taking a step ;3). But you know, these are people who (ingame) advertise the elemental hyper beams (Blast Burn, Hydro Cannon and Frenzy Plant) as the schmexiest moves ever. They might honestly have thought that the HMs would be useful. o.o

Concerning Hyper Cutter...it's sort of very pointless. I mean, who cuts grass anyway? If you don't want the encounters, invest in some freakin' Max Repels or give your lead pokémon a Smoke Ball. Tropius + Gyarados is all you should ever want for your HM needs.

^ What is Hyper Cutter? Other than the Japanese name for Razor Leaf. I thought you meant Cut, but you mentioned Cut in the above paragraph, so...

I don't see the debate here because obviously the HM's have to suck, otherwise you'd be getting too good of moves early in the game. (not that you can't by trading, but whatever...) They're bad, end of story, no use wishing they weren't.

I use Charizard and Empoleon as HM slaves. Hey, I wasn't gonna train by Bold FR Char anyway, and the Empoleon I got off the GTS with a funny name, so I decided HM slave. (Mr. Penguin, teehee)

Hyper Cutter is a trait that prevents the pokémon from having its Attack reduced in battle; it's being discussed because it also has the overworld effect of increasing Cut's range when you use it to remove grass.

Anyways, your argument on the power is pretty silly at some parts. A lot of the really crappy HMs (Like Fly, Dive and Defog (Two of which are the victims of game freak's two-turn move perversion)) are given out fairly late in the game when there's already a whole freakin' lot of powerful TMs at your disposal so there's really no reason to make them so abysmally weak. Now Cut I can understand to a degree, but I can't really say the same for the rest of them. And even the early ones could have been made a bit more useful without disturbing the game balance. xP

Ohh...that Hyper Cutter...right, forgot...eh heh... I figure it's just meant to be a neat litle side effect, like Cut in the first place. Maybe not needed, but...

I dunno...exactly why do the HM's need to be good? If we have powerful TMs at that point... Sure, it would make for no more HM Slaves, but still. ...I guess I've just never cared. =P
