I know the rule of thumb is one month but I'm confused as to what that means? This is basically a two-part question:

    1) Is a thread considered "expired" when it's been one month from the day the thread was created or when it has been one month since the thread has been posted.

    2) How long is a month? Month lengths vary from 28 to 31 days so this is somewhat confusing.

    P.S.
This part is unrelated but we should sticky one the questions where someone asked if we can change our usernames so newer members can get their answer without having to make a new thread.

It depends on the moderator; most take from XXth day of one month to XXth day of the next as a whole month.

Same as Ninja Caterpie said. But if you posted a day before, it would be counted as bumping it too.

Not officially, only when an actual month has past (ie. 17th - 17th). This doesn't count as an offence and, if you go tell someone off for it, you'll be the one in trouble instead.

I think again, it depends on the mod.
When I posted on a thread just before a month had passed, a mod said this:

    That's spam buddy.
Try not to do that again in another thread.

Does anyone know about this part of my question.

And I posted in a thread that was like a day or two shy of a month and a moderator told me since it wasn't a full month yet, there was no offense commited.

Maybe you should try reading the rules, it's in there. And as I have already said, it varies between mods.

It's one month since the thread was posted in--the thread's actual creation has no bearing on the rule.

'Just' before a month passed, you say; then perhaps it depends on time zones — I don't think any moderator should be doing you in for being within a month (even to the second, a limit is a limit; eg. the police won't take action on people doing 29mph on a residential road, but they will someone going 31) unless your post really was nonsensical or off-topic, but a number of staff here are Australian, putting them about nine hours ahead of your time, so if you posted in the thread at 11:00pm GMT on the eve of the thread's expiration, over in GMT+9, it looks like 8:00am and they will act in accord to that.

In light of this consideration, it might be in better interests that the staff work consistently according to... EST (GMT-5?)? I'm not sure where the server is based, but yeah. Doing this would be a bit over the top for such a small thing, so it's just a little thought.

^ Doesn't matter. :/ The post before it would have an updated (to the mod's time) timestamp so no matter what timezone it is for everyone involved, there should be no issues with the time displayed on the posts. It's either within a month or it isn't.

If a thread was closed in error before the month was up (and/or a warning/infraction handed out), just contact the mod and point it out. If that gets you nowhere, bring it to the attention of a higher staff. Chances are it was just a mistake.

(In regards to the deleted post, I guess we could technically count 30 days from whatever the day was but that's tedious. :s Much easier to just go by the date & time. If something was last posted in on February 28th and got another post on March 29th, we'd probably close it just for consistency's sake.)
