Who are they?

Has anyone noticed how in some episodes or movies there will be a photograph with only half of its occupants showing, or you'd have a character with their face in shadow? In most cases, they've been revealed, such as Giovanni. But there remains a mystery surrounding other characters. In the "Origin of Mewtwo", the scientist's wife was never revealed; in fact, she was blocked from sight. And I think there's also a picture in Ash's home that is mostly shaded in one portion, presumably the image of his father. Why are they blocked? Could they possibly be known characters?

I'm extremely curious and would like feedback.

hmmm. I think the characters were there just because they needed to be there.. I mean, they needed an extra scientist to fill in the role and continue to story. So I think it'll be just a waste of time if the scriptwriter focused on those characters.. I think it served not much of a purpose... o.O

I figure they're showed because, while they needed to be there, they weren't important enough to be given an image, or a name....
They were just filler characters, so people would at least now they existed...
