Why all the rivalry?

    With GO hype being at maximum capacity, the popularity of the app continues to sore out of control. With that, we're seeing a lot of comradery with other players -- but also quite a bit of tension between the teams. It seems especially strong between Team Valor and Mystic. Or did I just make a Team Instinct doesn't matter slight there...?

    So what do you think about this quickly boiling rivalry between the factions -- Is it too much?

    Are people taking it too seriously, or do you think it adds more fun to the GO experience?
     
    I've actually been coming across people easily. No real issues being presented but everyone with the same goal of capturing Pokemon.

    Funny thing happened last night while I was at the Park. Literally, not one person was around my family and I, we lured 3 Pokestops - within nearly 5 minutes 20-30 people show up and just sucked off our lures. It was hilarious, I left and was like man these lures didn't lure Pokemon but they sure did lure some humans over here.

    I was wondering this a little bit myself. After all, the three Team Leaders all work for Professor Willow, so everyone's really on the same side.

    But I do think that the rivalry is mostly just in good fun. I don't foresee any actual damage happening because of it.

    Heres the real reason why theirs so much rivalry

    I don't even know how people picked teams in the first place. I mean between the 3 birds I don't have a favorite. Blue is my favorite color, Moltres has the best shiny and Zapdos has the best design, the bird itself I mean.


    It's similar to sports teams, I mean I get it if they are from your city. But people have favorites between cities on the other side of the country. But why? I don't get it.


    There really isn't anything that makes these 3 birds better then the other 2, all 3 are exactly the same bird with a different type.
     
    It's just a lot like team sports, I guess. It has nothing to do with the legendary birds or the colors. You make an allegiance to one team, and then you defend that allegiance.

    I guess some people just take being part of a team too seriously. -shrugs-

    It's turf wars. It will result in rivalry. There's no avoiding it.

    However, they all seem to be friendly competition so far.

    I've already spent quite a few hours since day one in long sessions of tug-of-wars between all three teams. Lose some, win some, usually losses occur when literally outnumbered. Major landmarks in NYC are hotspots for intense competitions where the gym colors will swap nearly nonstop for hours on end.

    Today alone I spent about an hour soloing a gym by myself against both Valor and Instinct teams. Of course I couldn't prestige the gym up fast enough on my own, even after I've claimed it.

    But after I left the location and came back, I stumbled across two Mystic members and the three of us proceeded to lock down the gym and prestige it up to level 5. The other members of Valor and Instinct gave up since they literally drove out and greeted us. We don't expect the gym to last through tomorrow as anyone who works there will be able to dedicate the time to whittle us down and reclaim.

    But again, it's all good fun. Eternal king of the hill battles.
     
    Mystic, Valor, or Instinct? Who Cares?

    The long debated question since GO was released. But honestly, I don't care. I picked Mystic because Articuno is my favorite bird, but honestly I'm not in it for the gyms and the competition. We're all Pokemon fans, so I don't discriminate if you're on another team. Because no matter how much each team hates eachother, in the end we all still love Pokemon, and we play the game. Sorry for this, but I just wanted to state my opinion out here. Have a wonderful day! :)
     
    I picked Yellow because Zapdos is my favorite bird, and I'm a big fan of electric types. I thought most people would pick Zapdos because he is the best bird competitively in all of the games. Has SE against every other bird, and Speed to beat Articuno. But i Agree with you. We're all pokemon fans, and there's no point in getting serious about which team you're in just because of a phone game. Most people i know who play pokemon doesn't even know much about pokemon. they're just following the trend anyways. I'm not going to be an ahole to my friends just because they chose a different team from me. With that all said #InstinctorExtinct!!

    Zapdos is truly the best out of the three competitively, and I think the reason why Valor and Mystic are so popular is because a lot of the people who have never played Pokemon are just choosing between Red or Blue, and hate Yellow I guess. Instinct is definitely underrated. #IDontRememberIfMysticHasSomethingLikeThis
     
    I agree, it's just a game and like stated before, more people are just paying for the hype and don't even know much (if anything) about pokemon. I'm a sensitive person, and I was super offended at first when my friends made fun of me for picking Mystic. (I started playing when it came out... and then everything blew up). I didn't know what teams my friends were on, I was just out there to play. Now I'm all left out and can't really do those #squadgoals when taking gyms. But either way, there shouldn't be ANY discrimination. It's so childish. Should read those FB stories of younger kids taking it super far as to vandalize, steal, and make fun of/attack others. Gettin' outta hand imo.​

    You're not really missing out on the #SquadGoals trust me. I went once with my friends and it sucked because my phone is pretty crappy so I can't keep up with them (Only level 8 or 9 I think, haven't played in a while). And I agree. Stealing, muggings, vandalism, it's all too much. It rally needs to be stopped. An old friend of mine got jumped because he was team Mystic, and was jumped by Valor. Like really? It's all wayyyyy to dumb.

    Ah my friends are nerds like me and got a geared up to be the very best. :( So I actually am missing out from my circle of friends. (However we are all over the place, they just go with their group of friends and then post about it.) I'm sorry you have a phone that can't handle it, I would seriously be upset. It does need to be stopped! Like what's the point of violence in a GAME??​

    I am too with my friends. Just tried to open Pokemon GO and it won't even open. Tried multiple times, but it just crashes. Sad. My two friends already have around 90-110 pokemon already registered. I walk with them but I still feel left out because I can't play often because of my phone. I sorta know how you feel. :)

    Aw, what kinda phone do you have? Have you submitted a ticket in so they can fix the issue for you (and possible others)? I would feel left out, I won't lie. The point is to do something together, ya know?

    iPhone 4S thats a couple years old. And yeah, I've sent a couple. And yeah, that's what me and my friends were all excited about when GO was announced. We were gonna explore and be rivals. But I obviously had to back out haha. But I'm not worried because when Sun and Moon comes out I'll be back. :D

    That's the way to do it! Good you submitted those tickets, it'll hopefully help out down the line when thy do REAL updates. (first update was some text fixes. -.- )​

    Wait are you serious about the text files? It would be better off doing nothing then. Whatever though. Hopefully they'll take the tickets and read them all over (not from just me obviously, from everyone). If they don't that's really poor judgement and shows they don't care about the game nor it's people.
     
    I legit did pick Valor based on Red. Been playing Pokemon for years so I'm no newbie but I didn't have a "favorite" bird, more like a prefered typing. I would have chosen Instinct before ever going Mystic. Articuno is just way overrated imo, Moltres isn't the best looking, he actually looks a bit derpy to me and Zapdos has really short wings. Lastly the text fix was that you could put html code in a pokemon's name and that could cause security issues.

    Also picked my team based on my favourite colour - red. I couldn't give a monkey's wotsits about the lore behind the teams, the leaders, or any sense of team competition. I'm just sad my friend didn't pick the same team as me because now we can't do gyms together :/
