Why do people say that Pokemon is for kids?

    Now, this isn't a thread ranting about the fact people say this, it sucks as we all know, especially when one gets made fun of for liking Pokemon based on that judgement (made a thread about this an age ago on here) but this is more about why people say that.

    Now, I know that it's obviously made with children in mind, but there are alot of aspects to these games that in my personal experience, most young players don't understand. EV Training for example, hell, even I have trouble with that sometimes! But there's also the patience required to level Pokemon up to level 100 and max them out, the huge collecting side of it that requires multiple games to complete if you're willing enough, and it goes on.

    There are alot of aspects to these games that can appeal to older players, and it makes me wonder why people say Pokemon is strictly for kids, and I was wondering if anyone had any possible explanations or guesses as to why?

    Again this is not a rant thread per say, it's just me trying to make some degree of sense of this.

    the reason for all the babyish nonsense in pokemon is the little rat and my enemy pikachu.

    it follows ash around like a shadow and will never evolve, therefore being a SMALL pokemon. people (me included) think it's about time to let it evolve then things would probably be a lot less babyish.

    not only that, but the little kids and even some fangirls (no names) keep acting all 'aww aww so cute! pikachu 4ever pwn pwn! :3' is pretty much childish itself.

    once it evolves, then I pretty much will fail to see what else is childish about it.​
     
    I do love Pikachu (even if I don't watch the show anymore) but I have to be honest, you could have a point there. If one episode or even just a part of an episode is a person's sole exposure to the franchise as a whole it could give that impression. It's stupid to judge an entire franchise off just that but...it's going to happen isn't it?
     
    I think that for the show, they tend to keep it silly so a lot more of the younger ones like it. For the games, well, I think it's not just for kids. I actually know more older people than kids that play Pokemon games.
     
    Well, another point ist that many people know about the TV-Show and see it's more for kids. They notice only a little about Pokemon in general (the games, the manga..) and take this little knowledge to form an opinion. Then again, they're not interested enough to check if this opinion is founded
     
    This is such a wierd coincidence, as not that long ago I was having an argument with my mom. So, she saw me playing Pokemon Yellow and went 'Why do you still play Pokemon?' So I said, 'Because it's a fun game. Isn't it just as bad as playing Mario? I mean, they are both aimed at children.' So she replied that Mario is a classic so it's not childish. Then I got into a argument about the first nintendo character, but thats of-topic. Anyway, I dont know. I assume its because of the anime. (Yay, I always blame the anime XD.), Pikachu in particular. I bet if it was something larger and more...fierce looking, not as many people would assume that Pokemon is for little kids. :\
     
    Wow, that "it's classic" argument is absolute nonsense, Pokemon could be considered classic now, it's more than 10 years old which is hardly knew.

    Just had to throw my 2 cents in there.
     
    I agree with you.
    When I first heard about EV's I was like:

    "Woh. Wait... What?" XDDDDD

    Then I got use to it and it was fine.

    I think it just depends on the people who play it.
    People who say its for kids either:

    1. They refuse to accept it is an awesome game so they cover it up
    2. They have no soul

    The cartoon is the reason people think the entire franchise is childish. People who have that sort of attitude tend to be the people who haven't played the games.

    And I'm not the talking about the people who call you kids for liking Pokemon, I'm talking about the ones who get upset by those people.

    What do have against being a kid? Do hate being called kid or something? What's so bad about being young in the first place?
     
    Pokemon is technically for kids, but that doesn't stop millions of adults from liking it as well. :/

    So what if some people think it's 'childish'?

    People like what they like..

    But I do agree that are aspects of the videogames that kids wouldn't understand. I once met a kid who didn't even know how to save his Pokemon Yellow game file. So everytime he turned it back on, he had to start all over.
     
    Pokemon IS for kids. It's marketed torwards kids. It has been and always will be.

    While it's beneficial to the franchise that many fans hang onto it into their teens, 20s, and 30s, their largely insignifigant to it because kids (or more specifically, their parents $$) are the main target making Pokemon the success that it is.
     
    Pokemon is for everyone, it just depends on how deep you dig into it.
     
    The people who say those things probably play it non-stop themselves. Isn't the game like a 3+? And the anime probably didn't help.

    I blame the anime because of the kind of themes and opinions it projects. if it was my first exposure to pokemon, i would probably think it the most childish and immature thing ever.

    However, despite the games having some reasonably mature content (if you know where to look), such as if you actually read what cyrus had planned; they are to a degree kind of childish, but who cares? the point is that the games are enjoyable whether you just play it to get through the game, and simply get away from reality, or go hardcore and compete in good competition with people from all over the world

    It's being called childish and a freak for liking something meant for kids that pisses me off, is that not understandable?

    and I hated being a kid (18 now) personally, but that's just me.

    This wasn't even a rant thread to begin with, it was trying to make sense of why people say and think the franchise is soley for kids and any teens or adults who like it are freaks.
     
    Well, a lot of people sure seem to think it's only for kids.

    This forum alone is a good example. I'm hard-pressed to find ANYONE on this forum that is my age or older. It makes me feel kinda self-conscious, being this age and still liking Pokemon. I started playing Pokemon senior year of high school.

    Oh well, I like what I like, I'm not going to be embarrassed for being me.
