Xbox is bringing back friend requests for the first time since the Xbox 360 era — a decade and two console generations after they first went away.

The long-requested feature will be will be accessible to Xbox Insiders starting this week, as well as those who have joined the PC Gaming preview on Windows PC and handheld devices like the ROG Ally. It will let users "easily send, accept, or delete friend requests," and will make friends on Xbox a "two-way, invite-approved relationship." Users will also be able to continue to separately follow their favorite creators on Xbox.

If you're feeling confused about how all of this works, you're not the only one. In the current system, adding another user to your list makes them a follower until they also add you to their friends list. With no notifications, it can sometimes be hard to keep track of friends on Xbox's platforms.

I never thought I'd ever see these return to Xbox, because it's been so long. But yeah, I much prefer this over the current friend request system the Xbox has.

    ...???

I didn't realize they'd ever taken this away. Did they just do away with the friends feature entirely?? How did you play with friends then??

Glad they brought it back, although it seems silly that they removed it in the first place. I imagine it was to prevent YouTubers and the like from being swamped with requests constantly, but that could've been fixed by just adding an option disabling them.

    Oh I'm happy then!

I think you can just 'follow' people or something iirc. I'd have to try it out again next time I hop on the Xbox or the app.

Edit: You can 'follow' and 'friend' people now. I added those just now but am auto following them it says. A lot of them haven't been online in days
