Well, actually, labor laws in my state dictate that salaried workers must get 15 minutes of break time for every 4 hours worked, so part of that specialized treatment argument gets destroyed by laws like that in states like mine.

Well, it's already been 5 since the last laws regarding the minimum wage were passed. Though it has been just 3 since the federal wage was last raised (in accordance to the timetable created by that law passed in 2007). Maybe a division between under-18 and over 18 minimum wages would be fair, leaving the under-18 wages at their current level and the over 18 wages be raised closer to the minimum living standard. This way there's an opportunity for the unskilled, under-18 worker to get experience without those over 18 taking a pay hit.

Though there are many over 18 who have never held a job before, so it probably wouldn't be as fair as it could be.

Yeah, I've always wondered this. It's like "ignorance is bliss" in reverse. Too much knowledge (maybe) makes you depressed... on a chemical, brain level, or something. I dunno.

I am fully aware of that, having had a roommate myself for the past year before finding even that arrangement too expensive (on $10/hr! - but I had student loans coming due soon) and moving back in with my parents. Housing is not the only expense that drains your wallet. Food and even public transportation can cost an arm and a leg.

And why should people have to room with someone just to afford a place to live? This is America. We should aspire to be better than that!

The minimum wage at full-time hours that's required just to cover basic living expenses for living on one's own is actually more along the lines of $11 now. Just any FYI. Not that you could really live off $7.25 even a decade ago, though.

It's 'per se' not 'per say'. Just letting you know because I used to make that mistake and it embarrassed me when I figured it out and I know you hear a lot of complicated words and want to use them and then not exactly spell them right so you might appreciate some help on that front.
