How do you like to watch your TV shows?

  • Seems like kind of an odd question but hear me out, haha.

What's your preferred way to watch TV shows? Do you watch them religiously every week when a new episode comes out? Or are you patient (or do you really hate cliffhangers) and wait for it to be released on DVD so you can just marathon it in a few sittings?

For me it kind of depends. There are some shows that I just can't watch too many of in one go, so I don't mind watching them every week because getting a weekly dose is great but anything more and I just can't do it. But for most shows, I prefer getting ahold of the DVDs and watching at my leisure. I've been doing a lot of that lately--catching up on old shows, letting episodes pile up on my PVR, and then just curling up on the couch and watching a bunch of things at once. :)

  • I really don't watch anything that has an ongoing story. So, I don't need to worry about missing an episode or keeping up.

The only shows I ever tried watching in entirety were Freakazoid! (two short seasons, not a big deal) and Batman: The Animated Series (plus season-ending movies).

I didn't make it through Batman. Lost interest when it switched from the first season (just "Batman", I guess... the title screen has no title it's just that cool XD) to the second or third season ("The Adventures of Batman and Robin"). Went from a prime-time mature cartoon to closer Saturday morning fare. So, :( Gave up then lol

Batman had a few arcs in it though.

Other than, I really don't watch those kinds of shows :x

If it's a show that's already completely finished airing, I watch them in a marathon sense. If I'm very set on watching them all, that's all I'll do that day. This is usually the case when I decide to watch Roseanne.

I also prefer to watch TV shows when I'm the only one in the house. Mainly because it gives me the liberty to cackle as loud as I please. When someone's home, I tend to try to contain my laughter and then they ask me what this stupid smile that's on my face and why my cheeks are puffed out are about. But if it's a show that I watch that's got a new episode coming out every week, I am at the computer streaming it or at the TV anxiously watching it the moment it comes on. Most of the time I tweet every single thought that pops into my head. I also keep a calendar specifically for marking the days and times a show comes on. Because I forget about things very easily.

I hate cliffhangers, but I try my best not to watch the previews for next week.

  • If it's a series I really like, I'll wait for the new episode every single week and religiously follow it until the end.

Most of the time, though, I'll watch sporadically. An episode today, one three days later, and so on. I haven't marathoned a series in a while.

  • Well the only shows I've really watched we already have the complete show on DVDs, so I just watch them all on DVD...

Other than that, we have a series link recording on our Foxtel (cable tv) so sometimes I record shows which tape automatically ever time it's on and I watch it. I like this cause I can skip the ads.

  • What's your preferred way to watch TV shows?
Most of the television shows I watch are American so, for the most part, I watch them on my computer rather than an actual TV. The TV I have in my room actually isn't hooked up to an aerial, and I just use it for watching DVDs/playing games. In an ideal world, the shows I watch would be simulcast to British TV stations so I could watch them in all HD quality and whatnot, but that's not going to happen for many, many years.

Do you watch them religiously every week when a new episode comes out?
Of shows currently airing new episodes, I'll watch them literally as soon as they come out. If I'm in the mood for staying up late - as US primetime TV starts at 1am UK time - then I'll occasionally watch them live via streaming websites... but for the most part, I do my TV watching the day after each new episode comes out, normally in the morning. I'm pretty religious when it comes to the stuff I like, and I like a fair amount of TV as well; kinda deadly combination!

Or are you patient (or do you really hate cliffhangers) and wait for it to be released on DVD so you can just marathon it in a few sittings?

I like marathons, but I don't like having to wait until a series can be watched in a marathon setting. With shows that have already aired a whole season that I want to watch, like The Wire or shows that I want to watch over and over again, like The Simpsons, I'll buy the DVDs just because they're a higher quality than streaming and I feel less guilty for copyright theft reasons.

If I happen to be watching a show I like, I will continuously tune in every week to see the latest episode. I don't generally watch a lot of television though only when something good might come on. And, If I really like the show I'll eventually take myself to be buying the DVD's as well to watch the episodes any time I want. (:

  • I don't really watch a lot of TV, and if I do I don't really watch anything specific. Usually I just zap around and watch the first thing that isn't obnoxious enough to scare me away within the first five seconds.

This is how I used to be. I'd just watch whatever looked good (which was essentially just Simpsons and Futurama reruns). I'd be bored otherwise so I turned to the internet.

It's only recently that I started trying to get into continuous TV series and I've found a few I really like. It's enough that I PVR things and don't have time (or the drive, I guess) to watch them all the time. I kinda miss just channel hopping though.
