With each anime season lately, I seem to be starting far too many anime that I just don't finish. That may or may not be the case with this season, however, as after looking through the "Spring 2009 Preview!" at Random Curiosity, quite a few caught my attention. So, in the end, I thought I'd outline the anime I'm actually considering watching. You can find the complete summaries and videos at the Random Curiosity post mentioned above.
Sengoku BASARA
BASARA is in the same position Devil May Cry was in a few years ago, that situation being an anime adaptation of a Capcom game. It was in my opinion that the Devil May Cry anime wasn't that great, so I'm not going to guarantee I'll be watching this all the way through. The Promotional Video at least makes the action look good, and abingdon boys school is doing the opening song, "JAP", so that's some motivation for me to watch at least the opening sequence. "LET'S PARTY!"
Asura Cryin'
A mysterious suitcase, the haunting ghost of a childhood friend, a destroyed world, and a time-traveling mecha. This has all the workings of an entertaining series, if it's executed right. Again, I can't say I'll be watching this for sure, but I'll certainly be checking out the first couple of episodes. Both the opening and ending songs, "Spiral" and "Link" accordingly are done by angela, an artist I've come to expect good songs from. So, if nothing else, I'll probably get some new songs to add to my collection out of it.
Pandora Hearts
Pandora Hearts was a manga that I started reading a while ago, until I realized it wasn't being scanlated at a very fast rate at all, so I stopped following it. Alas, here is the anime adaptation. The major appeal for me to this series is the cast of characters and the principle behind the plot. It kind of plays a bit on themes from Alice in Wonderland, but the plot overall is rather dark. FictionJunction is doing the opening, "Parallel Hearts", while savage genius is doing the ending, "Maze". I'm not particularly fond of those two bands, so I'll have to hold off judgment on song expectations for now.
K-ON!
Girls join music club, girls start band. That is the basic premise behind K-ON! Lucky Star fans may appreciate this series, as it started out as a 4koma just like Lucky Star did, and is even being produced by some of the same KyoAni staff. Now, personally I didn't like Lucky Star, but provided this has more of a plot line and more likable characters, I'll probably stick with it to fill the "random nonsense" void. I ♥ the character designs, at least. Both the opening and the ending are done by the seiyuus for the characters, which makes sense since the anime... well, it's about a band.
Valkyria Chronicles
An anime based on the PS3 game of the same name, set in a fictional version of 1935 Europe, I would have watched this even if I didn't own the game myself - which reminds me, I really need to beat it. The game is simply amazing, and it has a pretty good story that goes along with it as well. Plus, how often do you see anime with tanks as a main part of the plot? TANKS!? Not to mention, the singer of the opening, "Ashita e no Kizuna", HIMEKA, is Canadian. The ending is called "Ano Kaze ni Notte" by pe'zmoku.
Fullmetal Alchemist - Brotherhood
It's been a long time since the first Fullmetal Alchemist first came on the air. In fact, it was one of the first few anime I watched while being aware that it was anime. It's a given that I will be watching this and following through with it, especially it seems to cover the parts of the manga the anime did not. The opening, by YUI, is called "again", while the ending by SID is called "lie".
Tayutama -Kiss on my Deity-
Tayutama was originally a series that reminded me of the Fall season's Kannagi in terms of plot. It involves a goddess... well, semi-goddess assisting a shinto priest in dealing with evil spirits called Tatutais that he accidentally released into the world. I like the art style, and my schedule is seriously lacking in comedy, so I figure I'll start this and see how it ends up. The opening is "The fine every day" by Kicco, while the ending is "Kizuna no Uta" by Ui Miyazaki. Never heard of either of them.
Eden of the East
The concept behind Eden of the East is really unique, to say the least. A Japanese girl goes to the United States on her graduation trip, only to run into some trouble just outside the White House. She's saved by her own countryman, only he's completely nude, carrying a pistol and a phone loaded with tons of money. It also seems to deal with terrorist attacks, and judging by the trailer it's probably a romance as well. I'm actually pretty psyched about this, since the PV makes it look really awesome. By listening to the ending, "Futuristic Imagination" by School Food Punishment in the PV, I can tell I'm going to be absolutely obsessed with that song when it comes out. The opening, by the English rock band Oasis, "Falling Down", is something I'd need to hear more.
I think I have too much to watch... XD
