When I was a little boy, video games were very much new to me. I grew up watching my dad kick Mike Tyson's arse in Punch Out!, my brother winning race after race in Star Wars: Pod Racer on the N64, and even my mum from time to time play with my dad co-op style with Super Mario Bros. 3. Back then I was only a spectator of video games, as my mum didn't think I was ready for them just yet, and thus I didn't truly have a full appreciation of them. That all changed though when my dad came home with a little gem called Civilization III.

    Spoiler:
Reflecting now, if I had to pick a game that I've invested the most hours into, it would most definitely have been Civilization III. Encompassing a lifespan of time invested into it, it's been a game that I can confidently say I haven't and will never get tired of, as it will always hold a special place in my heart. I have very fond memories of my brother and I sitting around our brick of a computer playing Civilization III. We didn't have the full game - as in we didn't have all of the civilizations you could play as, but other than that it was a full game - but my brother and I didn't care. We would take turns ruling our civilizations (and the world) with an iron fist, myself generally playing as India and Japan while my brother played as China and Rome. It's probably one of the only games that my brother and I truly met eye to eye when it came to being in agreement as to what is a great game.

    Spoiler:
Last year, when I was on vacation, I was skimming through the Steam Summer Sale and came across Civilization III. It had the game in it's entirety on there, missing clans and all, and to my astonishment realized that the game had multiplayer. I told my brother about it and immediately we both bought and downloaded the game to play against one another. I have a vivid memory of it now - my brother and I would stay up to 4AM, laptops in hand sitting across from another munching on potato chips while plotting to eliminate the other. It baffles me that my brother and I spent so many years playing the game and yet we never truly got to play against one another, yet the answer to that problem was sitting in front of us the entire time. Simply silly if you ask me.

    Spoiler:
I tried getting into Civilization V but personally, I just couldn't get into it. Maybe it's the transition to 3D graphics or the dumbed down tasks you can do in the game, but the game isn't quite my cup of tea. Personally, it doesn't shine as brightly as the gem that Civilization III was for me, mainly because of all the time I invested into it. Alas though, everyone has their own opinion. Nonetheless, Civilization III was the game that truly introduced me to video games and I haven't looked back since. What about you guys? What has been the first video game you've ever played? What games do you hold closely to you? Comment below as I'd love to hear and discuss with you what you have to say about this topic!
