Today, I was thinking a lot about how far I've come here on Pokecommunity. There are so many different things that I wouldn't have learned without joining this forum. When I first joined PC, it was around June of 2007. I found this place, like most people here did, by looking for the Rom Hack known as Pokémon Shiny Gold. Once I found the specific thread, I tried to download the attachment but, of course, PC told me that I had to register in order to be able to download it. I didn't hesitate and I joined straight away.
After I downloaded Shiny Gold, I left PC for a while to revel at the marvellous game that I had just found. Soon though, I realised why it was called a BETA - the game stopped just after the lighthouse. I thought I had downloaded a corrupt version so I went looking for the thread again. This time, I found it but, instead of just scrolling down and downloading, I actually read the thread which explained why it stopped at the lighthouse. After this, I became active on PC, especially around the Rom Hacking section - even considering myself to be a great mapper.
Of course, this didn't last. I got a spattering of the truth when I foolishly tried to downgrade a map that was better than mine. Instead of admitting the truth, I resorted to telling the guy that his map was average. When the other rom hackers saw this, they knew that I was only doing this for my benefit so they decided to teach me a lesson. At that time, I was working on a rom hack in which I was proud of (looking back, I actually was glad that I didn't release it) and, by the time I posted the thread showcasing the images, I got a battering from the acknowledged rom hackers. They told me the truth, how I should learn how to map and script properly before I told others off. The truth hurt, I was determined to leave PC for good on that day.
Two weeks later, I decided to come back on Pokecommunity. I decided to become a better man, a model member. I really wanted to change my actions because I knew it would help me in the future. It did. Since I came back, I felt much better about myself. Instead of trying to prove that I was the best as something, I listened to the people who knew about the subject at hand and slowly learned from them. This proved a great learning curve for me and, pretty soon, I considered myself one of the regulars here at PC. Two months after this, I decided that a fresh start was due so I created this very account. I donated money, became a supporter and made so many friends here. Later on, about two weeks ago I became a Moderator.
Now, when you started reading this, by my actions, you probably thought that I was a noob. The truth is that I was, it doesn't mean the end for anyone here at PC. I'm sure most, if not everyone here started off not knowing anything. I think that the main turning point is when you acknowledge the fact that you don't like what you are and you change it. It's really that simple. I did it, and it worked for me.
Thinking back, I think I owe everything to those Rom Hackers because, in the long run, they showed me what I truly wanted. All I had to do was reach for it.
