A console gaming question.

Hey guys I just wanted to ask you guys what I should get: A Playstation or an Xbox.
I really want to play video games again.

I pretty much like games like Kingdom Hearts and Assassin's Creed. Games with that type of combat where you can control them and they aren't turn based with a cool storyline that I can really get into. I don't really like Final Fantasy, because it's more like Pokémon and less like you're actually in command. Ya know? I also remember enjoying games like Halo and Splinter Cell. And a ninja game where you had to sneak around killing people completely undetected.

Those are really the only games that really left an impression on me at all when I played them back when 360 and PS2 were the thing.

    So what should I get?
Also if you have any game recommendations for the console you suggest based on what I like, I'd really appreciate that too! (:

I saw the new Assassin's Creed gameplay preview and I'm really digging that. But I want to get the best for my buck and I want to be sure that I'll actually play it.

I got an Xbox 360 after not having one for many years around this time last year and I pretty much used it just for Netflix. I played some Borderlands 2 and Assassin's Creed - I can't remember which version - but eventually just ignored it and sold it to Game Stop. I want to make sure that doesn't happen again.

How can you like KH, but not FF? :P The more recent games have much more control in them. They're not turn-based, like the old ones!

I, personally, think PS4 has a better games roster than X1 - but I have neither so >:3

  • I'd say get a PS3 and catch up on all the things you missed last gen. I can see you liking Uncharted, Darksiders, Ratchet & Clank, and games like that, and plus the Kingdom Hearts HD remasters are exclusives to that system.

Neither PS4 or Xbox One are really worth it right now, and probably won't be until the end of the year at the very least. The libraries are just too small, and most games are out on the last-gen consoles as well.

  • Well you've arrived at a good time tbh, considering Microsoft is now selling the Xbox One for $399 without force-feeding you a Kinect you never wanted for an extra $100 :/

The kinda games you're interested in are also available in spades on both consoles (more so on last gen though, something you should take into consideration due to the lack of backwards compatibility with either of the current gen consoles :/)

So what you have to look into are appeal and exclusives, PS4 hand-down coming out on top graphics-wise in current gen, whereas the Xbox One is a media center that gives you a lot more freedom than just playing video games, not to mention that the Xbox controller is easily the best controller ever created in the history of the world as we know it (this is fact (do not even try to argue (jk it's a matter of opinion (but still (that controller is sick))))).

As for exclusives, most everything is getting watered down recently because both Sony and Microsoft are big on micro-managing and pushing release dates (like how Infamous has become a big pile of steaming crap), not to mention that most exclusives announced this E3 seem to be new IPs so there's not much I could say there). Consequently, the biggies you gotta think about are Uncharted for the PlayStation, and Halo and Fable for the Xbox.

Sooooo, for you I'm gonna say go for the Xbox 360, that way you'll be able to get all the Halo and Fable goodies and catch up on what you missed during last gen (as Morkula pointed out 10x <3), and by the time you're done with that, current gen consoles will have a ton of actual content that will make buying a PS4/Xbox One worth (especially consider, as Morkula pointed out once again <3 <3 <3, that the libraries are pretty small atm and most major Triple-A titles that will be able to take full advatnage of the hardware on either console won't be out till somewhere near late 2014/2015).

So final consensus: Xbox 360, you don't get an opinion go buy one. KNEEL BEFORE MY MIGHT

EDIT: Oh and you should probably also look into that new Alienware console, apparently the hardware is great (reportedly performing better than both the PS4 and Xbox One with is really cool if it's true) and the UI links up directly to Steam, allowing a bigger library of games than you could ever imagine (PC IS AN UNDERRATED OPEN PLATFORM AND IT IS MAKING A COME-BACK). 1080p and 60fps, along with compatibility with any controller you want (PlayStation OR Xbox or whatever else you'd want for whatever reason). So yeah there's that.

  • I'm with Geoff on this one. Pick up a PS3 instead. I never use my 360 aside from watching what few DVDs I own (so essentially Netflix...haha) and I missed a TON of great games on the PS3. Ni No Kuni, Tales of Graces, Jak HD Collection, Sly 4 (I think you'd like the Sly series tbh, so the HD trilogy of that would be something you should pick up as well), and Little Big Planet. I think you'll find more interesting things to pick up with Sony than Microsoft, honestly.

Back to Sly Cooper though, if you liked that ninja game where you sneak around and kill undetected, you'd like Sly. The mission isn't to kill, but there are enemies to...well, kill. And you do a ton of sneaking around. That's the basis of the game, really. And stealing. :3 It's got nice elements of film noir too, so if you're into that, this series is up your alley.

Personally, I look back and wonder why I went with a 360 instead of a PS3. Most of the library consists of shooter games, my current 360 library is not only small, but also available on PS3. I guess I went with it for Halo, but ugh. Regretting that. The only good thing going for the 360 as far as I'm concerned is Viva Pinata. Which, if you do end up going with a 360 (or Xbone if it's backwards compatible, but I don't think it is), pick up Viva Pinata.

For PS4 and Xbone, like it's been said, there's not much going for either right now. You're better off waiting for a price drop and/or a better selection of games to your liking. That's what I've been doing with the Wii U. In the meantime, pick up a PS3 while you wait to choose between PS4 and Xbone.

I'm not getting a 360. I don't see the point in getting one of those. I already had one, and I didn't use it when I had it. I want the most up to date gaming system.

I think I'll go with Playstation.

  • PS3 has a better set exclusives (The Last of Us, Uncharted, God of War etc) imo. But some early games in PS3's console cycle have worse performance than their X360 counterparts (due to PS3's complicated architecture and developers having optimization problems).

If you're gonna go for next gen, personal opinion of mine would be to wait it out a bit. Wait for price drops and then grab one of them. I personally think PS4 is a better option. Because even with the graphical improvements that X1'd have after removing the "essential" kinect, it still won't compare to PS4. At least that's what I read on Digital Foundry @ Eurogamer.

Okay. I'll be getting a Playstation 4 when the price drops.

I'm not interested in getting any last gen consoles, so I'm not going to get Playstation 3.

  • I'd just take a third option and upgrade your PC and get a USB controller. Lots of good games on Steam, GOG, and even Origin and UPlay.
