  • When I get frustrated there are two sides of me that can show up: the helpless doormat who can't handle the pressure and the judgmental ass. When I'm at work I get frustrated quite easily.

So you'd think that working at a school like I do would mean I encounter a lot of people who are smart, eager to learn, and generally have their stuff together. It doesn't. People who go to school are crazy. Today has been one crazy person after another. Before I even started work today I saw a man walk into the middle of an intersection, though thankfully no one was going so fast they couldn't stop in time. Okay, that's weird and crazy, but it happens. But then before I even get to the building where I work I get accosted by a pushy man who'd shown up minutes before we closed yesterday (and was really annoyed that I had to turn him away) and obviously either hadn't read the big sign on the door that said we opened at 9 or checked to see that it was only 8. When I told him we open at 9 he acted like I'd said I had a salmon on my face and just kept ignoring what I was saying until he grew too annoyed to talk anymore.

Later in the day I had to help someone filling out forms on a computer because they were having trouble. It was asking for an ID number and then asking for a confirmation of that number. The person had only put their number in the confirmation box. The same person also had trouble distinguishing an example image of a pop-up message from a real one and kept clicking the image trying to close it even though, right above the image, it told you it was just an image. Another great case of craziness came from a person who came in to the room I work in asking for some place completely not even in my building so I directed her to the right building. She comes back in 5 minutes later and asks the person next to me the exact same thing she asked me.

The next stop on the crazy train came while I was walking down the hall past the bathroom. I saw a guy trying to ask someone who works here a big, involved question with a lot of anecdotes. She said she'll answer in just a moment and started walking into the restroom. And the guy starts to follow her in, still telling his big ol' story. So I went to intercept him and herd him to somewhere else. Of course I started to get the whole story as well even though for all this guy knew I didn't even work there.

Then there are the people who don't wait in line or notice the signs that tell them to wait in line, but there are so many of them each day that I hardly even notice.

And for the crowning moment of the day a very hyperactive man who looked to be on at least three kinds of drugs with eyes as wide and bright as the sun came into the building, mouth running off an unending stream of words without pause and no concept of personal space, came into the building looking for help. I happened to be the one he was looking for. After ten minutes I was able to find out what he was there for. After fifteen minutes I think I got it across to him that he really needed to talk to someone else. After twenty minutes I learned that he was recovering from brain surgery and was trying to get his life back together after months of therapy. I wished I could have disappeared from the embarrassment. I hadn't said anything, but I had thought it and I was so ashamed of myself that I've decided to give everyone else for the rest of the day the benefit of the doubt whenever they're acting weird.
