  • So my excitement level right now is pretty high because my favorite game of all time, Mirror's Edge, is getting another game this year, in fact it's going to be out next week. I've been a huge fan of Mirror's Edge before even day one. I'll even admit, I was a fan before anything of the game was shown.

It's not the most perfect game, it's a very flawed game, but my experience with Mirror's Edge is an unforgettable one for me. Starting with the beginning, it beganback on GameFly, I was looking through to see what games would be coming out soon as well as see what I could rent, and then I saw Mirror's Edge was listed. Now at that time I saw it, I knew thing about the game, other than a cover art. This cover art is a bit different than what it is now, it uses an older face pose that was used in concept arts and had a lot more of a navy blue color on it. The title alone got me a bit interested along with the work in progress cover. Then I saw a trailer of it. This game was back in 2008 and I'd even argue that to this very day, the original Mirror's Edge is one of the best looking games and even better than some of the more modern games that came out. Heck, the point where I say that it's about as good looking as Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition. The trailer blew me away when I first saw it. Other than that the game looked gorgeous, it played like something that I have not seen before with it being a first person parkour platformer, the animations when it came to the main character's movement looked fluid and natural, and it showed these kinds of moments that would happen in the game with crossing beams, jumping down an elevator shaft, being on top of a construction crane, ziplining and jumping to over buildings, it all looked good. Plus, I couldn't help it, and while it is a small thing, but I just really loved that this game showed the main character's hands and legs. Now at this time, I really loved this because you had freakin' legs, you didn't look like a torso just floating in mid air, you actually had legs. It's a small thing, but that's one thing I would like to see in every first person video games, and while I do see it more and more games having it, I want to see even more than there is now. Then came the reveal of the main character and I instantly fell in love with the main character, Faith Connors, and it was just purely out of her design with the tattoo on one arm and a tattoo on her eye, a black tank top, white pants that were tied up at the bottom, red shoes, red glove, and black hair in a bob cut. Now my reaction to that trailer was as follows, in the first minute and ten seconds I was just in awe and excited, then from that point on to the 1:27 mark I'm just watching with my mouth wide open and more in awe, then as it shows the characters and pans backward I'm just looking more in awe than ever, and then the title reveal shows and I literally begin crying my eyes out because it looked so good and really wanted to play it.

So next came the demo. I'm not lying when I say this, but I played that trailer a lot. I must have played that demo over 50 times because I was having that much fun playing it and just getting hyped and excited for when it did release. Then it finally came out and little 13 year old me was not disappointed. Out of all the things, I was only disappointed by two things and the first was the length of the game. I don't remember how long it took me to beat the game, but the game is on average about 6-8 hours long, however it is very much possible to beat this game a lot shorter than that, we're talking about under 3 hours. I think the fastest as of right now is either half an hour or under 50 minutes. That's not a whole lot and there is a lot of missed potential because of it, especially in story because the story is not all that interesting, it's pretty generic for a story of someone being framed for something they didn't do and you have to clear their name. No I really didn't care, nor do I still do care about the story, because I care more about gameplay more than story. I will complain about stories if possible, and might not enjoy the game as much if isn't good, but gameplay is the biggest factor for me in any game. The other thing that disappointed me was the boss battles. In total, there are a total of 3 boss fights, but I can only really call the 2nd boss fight a boss fight as the first one is more of a QTE and the last one you can complete within 3 seconds, even the 2nd fight or the only boss fight,is really easy. The rest of the game on the other hand, I really did enjoy by a lot. I liked every single level that there was since they involved platforming across the rooftops, except for 2 levels that took place in the sewers and in a subway, and going inside some large corporate buildings, a warehouse, a mall, a boat, and even a skyscraper in the final level. The final level in particular is one of my favorite levels since it is one of the more visually appealing levels, you start from the bottom of a skyscraper and make your way all the way to the rooftop of it, and you get involved in fire fights in parts of it and climb up the elevator shaft. I also loved how the gameplay not only revolved around platforming from rooftop and rooftop and inside large buildings, but also combat. Even though the game has guns, I never used them except for one time in the game where you have to stop a prison transport and you have no choice, but to use a sniper rifle. I maybe used a pistol that was laying out in the open for the taking in an office building to shoot some glass, but I can't remember if I did. The game even encouraged to not use guns, like an achievement to beat the game without firing a single bullet, which I did on my first time through, but after that, I did go back to use some guns, and while they were effective, they slowed you down if they weren't a pistol and you were slowed down by a lot, and limited your platforming. Between the guns and using melee, I prefer the melee combat, I personally found it more fun with melee combat performing stuff like wall run and kicking people in the face, wall running behind enemies and disarming them, kicking them between the legs and followed with a kick to the face, or just being able to disarm enemies, it just feels more satisfying and fun to me even though there wasn't a whole lot of combinations to do. If the one thing I can complain about the combat is, it is that it does feel that disarming some guns from enemies feels really off, this is mainly with the SMG where it feels like you need press the disarm button the exact millisecond the gun turns red to signify you can take it away, but it doesn't when I press it when I see it turn red and I'm forced to use the slo-mo, which you get after running fast for a short period of time, to disarm them. I also don't think the slo-mo is that helpful for a majority of the time, except for the only QTE where I do find it helpful there, but it really isn't needed even including enemies with the SMG since you can easily take care of them with melee. However with all these things combined, the platforming, the melee combat, I really enjoyed the game and it helped it become my favorite game of all time.

So fast forwarding to 2013, 5 years after the game came out, and I found out about this almost immediately, it was revealed that a new Mirror's Edge was in development during E3 2013. I don't follow E3 news all that much, but almost as soon as that reveal trailer got uploaded, I watched it. I should've known about this earlier since Battlefield 3 had numerous Mirror's Edge easter eggs in it's multiplayer, but I was extremely excited and nearly started screaming from excitement, but I did start squealing and jumping in my bed and said to myself "I can't believe they're making a new game. This is the best day of my life.". Now I didn't watch the E3 trailer simply because it was developers talking about their development for the game and so I didn't watch it, and then the 2015 was shown, now with the name Catalyst in the title, and I wanted to ignore it and wait for the game without watching anything about it until it gets released, but I couldn't wait so I did watch it. Now I was really excited from what I saw and I was jumping and squealing more in the first, but then the second half started playing. At this point I stopped jumping and squealing, and instead I just watched in silence as a soothing musical tone starts playing and the action gets toned down, and after just a few seconds and I see The City of Glass, and immediately and literally my jaw just drops open as I'm just so blown away at this city, and as it starts picking up speed a bit I have an immediate break down in tears and I start crying again because I just loved the trailer that much. Now prior to watching it I found more information about the game that was revealed during the E3 event and it made this trailer even better. First being that you couldn't use guns ever in the game with more focus on combat and running, which I really liked since I liked the melee fighting more than the gunplay in the first game and the runners to me always seemed more as melee fighters, and the running in the game was made that if you now run at Faith's highest speed, you would be invincible and I loved this as well as it pretty much means that it will give an illusion that you are running so fast that you are dodging bullets. However, the next one is the one that made me the most excited and was the reason why I dropped my jaw at the moment I saw The City of Glass and that was that the game was going to be open world. Now I felt like that the first Mirror's Edge needed that and now that is the case with Catalyst. So when I knew that and then I saw The City of Glass, it just made me drop my jaw because I basically saw my playground and it looked gorgeous and huge and fun. I even showed the trailer to my bestest best friend and she had about the same reaction as me, as she thought it looked fun as well and when she saw The City of Glass, she immediately goes "Woah" and she never says anything while watching stuff and she was as impressed as I was after seeing the city and when I told her that it was going to be open world. After seeing the trailer, I took my next opportunity that I could and pre-ordered the game about the following week. The game is set to be released next month and I did pre-order my game back in June, so I've been waiting nearly a year and I really do not regret it and I was able to wait it out.

Now last month there was a Closed Beta and I signed up for it months prior. I got my code the day it started and I started downloading the Front Runner Closed Beta, Front Runner referring to Closed Beta players. I played it and while the beta has issues, that is to be expected as it was a beta and people who do betas are supposed to report them and I did report my share of problems. This was a really exciting time, I will admit, because I never played betas before, let alone a Closed Beta which to me is more special since Closed Betas are only for certain people and I was one of the lucky ones to be able to play it and almost everything that was promised was shown in this beta. The only thing was that you weren't invincible when you reached your full speed, but rather you gained a "shield" and getting hit does decrease it, but I'm not going to complain a whole lot since the illusion of being so fast that you dodge bullets is still there. The one thing I do have to complain about are some of the timed challenges which feel like you need to be flawless in order to beat them as one mistake makes it near impossible to beat them. However, again, I'm not going to complain much since I really did enjoy the Closed Beta that much and I really can not wait until it does come out so that I can play more and all of it.
