  • Before reading this, let me warn you that it may contain some plot elements of the Pokémon movie, so expect some spoilers if you haven't watched them yet.

I have been watching several Pokémon movie trailers now, and lately I find one thing that becomes the current trend in Pokémon movies. No, not Legendaries, because I think it's a common thing to be showcased. I'm talking about new formes of the Legendaries instead.

From what I know of, from the first Pokémon movie (Mewtwo Strikes Back) to probably Jirachi: Wish Maker, the movies have the opportunity to introduce several Legendary Pokémon, most of them are new at its time, but of course, at that time new forms are not there yet, but it's still cool. Please note that I won't count Unown with its many variations (also considered a forme).

Destiny Deoxys started to change the direction a bit, by introducing 2 Deoxys which can change its formes at will, from Normal to Attack and Defense type. Please note that 2 latter types are exclusive to Fire Red and Leaf Green at its time, and Deoxys can't change its forms manually in-game until Diamond and Pearl. Even then, I think Pokémon Company are experimenting it at first, since the three movies after that (Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, Pokémon Ranger in the Temple of the Sea and The Rise of Darkrai) decided to not to introduce any new forms (Cherrim's Sunshine form is not counted, btw).

And then, here comes Giratina and the Sky Warrior, which introduces us to two new formes of Shaymin (as well as its debut) and Giratina, both having Sky Forme and Origin Forme, respectively, which also results in some good fights as well. Arceus and the Jewel of Life won't count because it features the flashback of Giratina's changing forme when battling Dialga in the beginning of the Giratina movie earlier.

After that, Zoroark: Master of Illusions and two Victini movies are the last two movies that I ever known to not introduce any new kinds of formes in any shape, as Kyurem Vs. The Swords of Justice starts the trend of new formes all the way via Black and White Kyurem and Keldeo's Resolute Forme.

In Genesect and the Legend Awakened, Genesect is having no formes, it's clever introducing 5 Genesect with having 4 having Drives and one (supposedly being the leader) being the shiny Red. Of course, I won't count these as formes, but then we saw the first Mega Evolution, which is Mega Mewtwo (Y).

Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction definitely introduced Diancie and its Mega Evolution, and it introduces handful of Mega Evolutions of other Pokémon as well, and then it will become epic when Hoopa and the Clash of Ages introduces Hoopa's Unbound forme, Primal Groudon and Kyogre, and Rayquaza's Mega Evolution. I think it may probably have the chance to introduce Mega Latias and Mega Latios too when they're at it.

Please note that while I think Pokémon started to showing off new formes of Legendaries, I'm not despising it. I don't know if the next Pokémon movie after Hoopa will feature new formes or not at all, but as long as the execution is great, I think Pokémon movie will be enjoyable by everyone, regardless of having new formes or not.
