As many of you guys know, I am a fan of cats. One day I would love to own a house that is filled with a bazillion cats. I'm dating a guy who feels the same way.

When Roy and I started dating (we were three weeks in), he introduced me to his place (his old apartment in northwest Houston). Aside from that, he introduced me to his 10 year old black cat, named Nazz. Because sometimes I like to add "-ie" at the end of every cat name, I called her Nazzie. When I first met Nazzie, she literally hated me. Like, whenever I would sit next to her, she would hiss at me and has the urge to attack me. That got me scared a little, but being an experienced cat owner myself (formerly owned two cats back home in California), I'm sure this is practically normal for older cats. I remember Serafina (my oldest cat) would be shy towards strangers, while Mikaila (my youngest) would be welcoming towards guests.

During the times I visited Roy, I noticed that every time I get close to him, Nazzie would hiss. She would always give me that "Ugh what the fuck is she doing here GO AWAY" (like in that image above). Then I realized that the reason why she does that is because she's not used to Roy having someone over, especially if it's a friend or even a girlfriend (and being his first girlfriend, I'm definitely sure she doesn't like me at all lmao).

We were both relaxing on the couch one time, Roy was playing Splatoon while I watched. My head was on him. Nazzie came out of Roy's room and stared at me viciously. Then she started to growl. I slowly got off Roy's shoulder and tried to pet Nazzie, but she immediately hissed when I got close. With that, she hopped on Roy's lap and fell asleep on him. I then began to feel a sense of jealousy between myself and Nazzie.

This "jealousy" phase lasted for two months.

These past recent times I visited Roy in Galveston, I started to notice that Nazzie was beginning to warm up to me. Every time I would walk in, Nazzie would quietly "mew" at me and rub her head against my leg. Her "purrs" were getting louder by the day. I was still scared of petting her, seeing as she might growl or hiss at me as she usually does every time I visit. Roy keeps telling me not to worry about it, but hey, you'll never know! When we both sat on the couch to relax, Nazzie…who instead of hissing at me only because I was sitting next to Roy, actually got up on the couch, walked on top of me, and snuggled in between us. I'm not sure if this was a way of telling us "I'd like to be a third wheel" or "go away he's still mine" kind of thing. At least she never showed any signs of attack.

His mom was there the time he was stressing out on his philosophy paper and I was helping her cleaning up the kitchen after I made some dinner for the two of them. He had his door closed, so Nazzie couldn't go in. Normally when Roy isn't around or unavailable, she would come up to his mom for some TLC or maybe food. Nazzie began to meow right at me. I listened but I did not understood what she wanted. Then Roy's mom said, "Oh, I think Nazzie wants you to give her some food. I would usually do that, but she's asking you." Has my reputation with Nazzie increased since it's been (now) three months since I've been visiting? I found my answer when I served her a bowl of food, and a bowl of milk. She purred loudly when she drank her milk.

Then, while I was chatting with his mom at the living room, Nazzie found a comfortable spot to nap in… my lap. <3

So, in total, it took me pretty much three months to win over Nazzie's affection. Usually when it comes to meeting cats it takes me weeks but not over a month. Nazzie seems to be a special case seeing as she's probably not used to seeing people outside of Roy's family. Now that Nazzie knows that I'm not a bad person and do not intend to hurt her in any way, I am now always greeted by either a rub on the leg, or a lick on the hand, or even a loud mew or purr. :3
