This week, the group arrives in Veilstone City, where they see that Paul has shaken the Gym Leader, Maylene.
The biggest change was cutting out the evil team. I have a very specific place I'm wanting Team Galactic to appear in the Veilstone storyline, so having Mars and Jupiter show up would mess up the setup for a few episodes down the road, when their appearance matters. That, and Maylene's depression was a decent enough plot.
I also sped up the confrontation with Paul's Elekid now Electabuzz, Surge to help improve the story flow and keep things moving. I also wanted it clear that Reggie is Paul's big brother now, as setup for later in this episode.
Maylene's Lucario is named for a character in the celebrated Condor Trilogy of kung fu novels. In the original Chinese, her name is Huang Rong, but my best Japanese approximation was Kiiroha, which still conveys the same meaning of "Yellow Lotus". Since I wanted to name Maylene's Pokemon after kung fu novel characters and martial arts items, this fit perfectly.
Next time, Dawn attempts to inspire Maylene, while the boys learn Paul's backstory.
