Yup, it's actually happening. The iconic movie of the 90's is finally getting a sequel. Warner Bros has announced in late February that they are currently in the works of writing up Space Jam 2 and that they are avidly seeking to get Miami Heat's superstar Lebron James as the lead man. It's not confirmed yet whether he'll get the role, but they have showed interest in him being in it. Now before y'all start throwing money at your computer screens at the slightest thought of a sequel to this gem of a movie, I want you to think about this: does Space Jam actually need a sequel? The simple answer to this, is a resounding "no."

    Spoiler:
Space Jam was an original movie coming out in 1996, but there isn't supposed to be a sequel to it. It was a new and innovative movie that nobody saw coming, including the lovable superstar - and arguably the greatest basketball player who ever played - Michael Jordan and the even more lovable Looney Tunes cast. By creating this sequel, there is absolutely no way it can match up to the original. Lebron James, as much as I hate to admit it, is a great basketball player but he's no Michael Jordan. He's currently a vilified basketball player - no one wants him to win another championship ring outside of Miami - and having him step in some large shoes to fill the role as the next Michael Jordan would only cause drama. When it comes to this role, it shouldn't be just about the player's basketball skills, but about the likability and charisma that encompasses the player as well. Essentially, Warner Bros would be shooting themselves in the foot by having a despised player as Lebron play the role as the next-Michael Jordan. Now if you're saying "well they could always choose someone else," they really couldn't. There are a lot of "great" players currently in the NBA, but it wouldn't have the same effect as having "the very best" in there. As a result, the connection between the player and the Looney Tunes would just be considered gimmicky or a flop.

Furthermore, why did it take them so long to think of hashing out a sequel? If they really wanted to create one, they should have just rode the hype and success of their first movie (although it would still be questionable whether or not the movie would be good. To me, this is just a desperation attempt by Warner Bros. to make more money and try to cash in on the late 90's movie's success. The only logical explanation I can think of is that they wanted to widen their audience; just like with Monster's University, they waited till the 90's generation of kids became young adults/teenagers and for the new generation of kids to come in watching the new Looney Tunes show that was hashed out on Cartoon Network.

    Spoiler:
Nostalgia aside, Space Jam is a movie that should just stick to being just a single movie; not a series of movies, not a spinoff; one movie. What do you guys think? Do you think they should make another sequel to the Space Jam movie of the 90's? If so, do you think Lebron James should star? Or do you think a more charismatic star should take the lead role? Comment below as I'd love to hear what you have to say about the topic!
