Okay...let's see...the main plot is something like this:
Alchemy is a kind of science that 'transmutes', turns things into other things of the same element. For example, you could transmute grass into flowers, and water into juice, but not rock into water. Alchemy's most basic rule is 'equivalent exchange'. You can only create something using something of equal value. Like, if you wanted to make a big statue, you would need the same amount of earth/rock/whatever to transmute it.
Edward Elric, called Ed, and his little brother, Alphonse Elric, nicknamed Al, are two alchemists who broke alchemy's most forbidden taboo: human transmutation. They tried to bring their dead mother back to life, but the plan backfired. Ed lost his leg and Al lost his whole body. Ed managed to attach his soul to a piece of empty armor at the cost of his arm, and he got automail to replace it and his leg.
So basically now they're trying to find a way to get their bodies back, and they're trying to find the Philosopher's Stone, a legendary item that multiplies an alchemists power by an incredible amount.
And...that's it, really. There's tons and tons of stuff I left out but I didn't want to spoil anything. Oh, and if you think it sounds too gory, well, it's not. It sounds a lot worse than it actually is.
