I always prefer to start with Cyundaquil, as I can get a Wooper and later Quagsire to cover water and ground types. He's basically a not as good version of Swampert - my favourite final evolution of a starter.

Evolve that Machoke and hope it has No Guard. This with a combination of Dynamicpunch to confuse with 100% accuracy and fill out the other moves with elemental punches and you'll be golden.
Get on the border two short routes, both with grass on them and move back and forth between each, checking the map for the change of location of the Pokemon and keep a Pokemon with Mean Look to stop them running away. Works every time for me.
