Its no problem.
Okay well I'll try to explain it as simple as possible.
Lets say you have a Pidgey and you want to raise its attack stat. You would battle pokemon that have high attack for example you would want to battle an Arcanine since they have high attack. So lets say you battle a bunch of Arcanine with your Pidgey.. when your Pidgey raises to the next level its Attack stat should go up dramatically. You can tell this by the little box that pops up when you Level your pokemon up and it has all the stats in it (attack, defense, etc.) Next to the stats is a + sign and then a number. Whatever number is next to the plus sign is the amount of EVs your pokemon gained.
