So far I've managed to get Wailmer and Feebas while chain fishing, and I've caught Oddish, Machop and Zubat in hordes. I've been trying to dexnav chain for a Ponyta and Zorua for a little while now, but I'm yet to have any luck using this method. I had the most luck with hordes in Y as well, so...

Traded Pokemon won't obey you until you get badges, and I think the first badge only covers traded Pokemon up to level 10, so you're going to need the second badge for that Charmander to start listening. I'd be wary of levelling him up too quickly between badges as well!

I'm curious about this as well. Yet to find a shiny using the dexnav, and I have the shiny charm now. Managed to find a shiny Wailmer yesterday and my chain couldn't have been any higher than 30. I would certainly say I have a lot more luck with chain fishing and hordes than any other method...

I find the GTS works really well so long as you only ever put Pokemon in and request what you want in return. Searching for a Pokemon you want will never get you anywhere because, as you say, everyone is a bit silly with it! The people who request Pokemon at impossible levels I really don't...
