This is why I bought one of those special Gameboy/Gameboy Colour screwdrivers and a dozen replcement batteries so that I could replace the battery.

I loved the Mt Moon in GSC because of the dancing Clefairies.
In RBY my favourite place was probably Celadon because of the shops and the casino.
For emotion, I loved Pokemon Tower and the Safari zone - I remember the first time I went into the Safari zone while eating chocolate dessert.
I've noticed there are lots of Pokemon factions. Those that love competitive battling and those that like the anime. I love the first season of the anime and some of the orange islands episodes. Maybe some of the GSC episodes too.
Other than that, most of it is filler.
I train my Pokemon to around level 60 or 70 and then I generally stop playing.
After completing RBY and GSC I've never had the same eagerness to 'Catch Them All' or level them all!
I suspect that Pokemon was always about animals and Pikachu seems (funnily enough) a more reasonable animal-like Pokemon. Pikachu is a mouse but he is electric. The guy who invented Pokemon liked animals.
