You're hurting yourself in-game, since you miss out on a ton of levelling XP from popping a lucky egg and evolving all those low Pokemon at once. However, I do agree that Pokemon are breaking out far too often now.

I've heard about soft bans, but nothing permanent. Did your friends get permanently banned? It's possible, but you need a rooted android or jail broken iPhone, so hopefully it's not too prevalent.

Is your phone rooted? Did you make sure locations services are enabled? Did you try opening google maps to make sure it finds your location before opening Pokemon GO?

I went ahead and pulled the sim card from my phone. Pokemon GO wouldn't work. I suspect that the game does a check. If your device can have a simcard and doesn't, it will assume you're cheating or some such nonsense. You should contact the company and submit a bug report.
