  • Do you happen to know how much free space is in an average GBA rom, or more specifically, firered? I'm a little little bit concerned about space usable for the hacking of my rom, but it's just a curiosity really.
I opened up my sprite in GIMP and hand-typed in the color hex codes (I.e, 385d2f) from GIMP's palette list for my sprite in the color picker tool for each individual box in the changed palette. I then saved it as a .gpl file so I wouldn't have to do it by hand all over again. Yes, the palette changes fine initially and even looks fine if I reload the rom in APE after saving and go back to the palette offset.
    1. Open FR Rom
    2. Load "0046161C" Offset (Hex) for Red's intro sprite palette.
*with the "Compressed palette (LZ77)" tickbox unchecked.
    3. Go to "Import" in "Changed Palette". (Index 1)
    4. Import "Aiden.gpl"
    5. Click "Replace".
    6. Close APE.

Those are the steps I did, exactly.
Okay, I managed to successfully change the intro sprites using unLZGBA+APE, but in-game, the palettes of Oak/Hero/Heroine/Rival are all messed up.
And, again! I managed to change the palette and greyscale sprite for Red in the intro successfully but when I booted up the rom in VBA, the colors were all messed up. Re-extracted the rom from it's zip folder to get a fresh rom, and opened up NSE again..only to find out it's not letting me replace the greyscale sprites in the intro. I suspect it may have to do with how I'm making my custom intro sprites into greyscale versions, but I'm not sure.
Sorry for the delay. Got a little frustrated/busy. I think I figured it out. I'll come back to you if I run into something again, okay?
Okay, I managed to figure out how to find the pointer of an image and replace it. :D But when I open up the rom in vba, Oak's sprite is unchanged, bizarrely. o.o
Could you make a couple of pictures showing how? I'm a bit stumped, and figuring out how to learn to use the hex editor with some pictures would be a great help since I'm mostly a visual learner.
Edit: By pointer, you mean check the "Automatically fix pointers" or whatever with Write to Rom in unLZGBA?
I'm running a hex editor (Hex Workshop) and when I tried to use the find function to look for 00E66888 (the offset of Oak's sprite), it tells me there's zero instances of 00E66888 even when I try it without the two zeroes.
I'm actually having a bit of an issue getting Oak's sprite to be repointed to the new one. Can you help me with it, please?
Are there any threads for showing off progress with my rom hack (at least until I'm far enough to warrant a project page) and a page to showoff/get crit for sprite work?
Oh, I'm trying to find all the art of a fakemon artist that my hack is based off of, since he hasn't been active for years.
Don't worry about it, no hard feelings. I'm not doing any rom hacking as of right now though, trying to find something I found earlier.
Well the last time we talked about it you said:
"Yeah, so now we need a plan of attack."
    So yeah thats why :p

Also kk, I don't think I know anything more then Dr.Fuji but I'll go and check if he needs help with anything of it.
